Needing some kind of bat, the Yankees reached out to Matt Carpenter, whom Chicago Cubs fans might remember from such instances as the 25 homers he hit against ...

It turned out the hit occurred on his son’s fourth birthday and both of his game-ending hits were on significant dates for his family. Trevino is well-regarded defensively and joined the Yankees as a career .245 hitter. It got away from me the last few years, but I was able to put in a lot of good work. Six homers now, and I think he’s hit probably three balls to the wall for outs. And possibly even more notable is Carpenter made a pair of plate appearances since June 3, a fact that prompted manager Aaron Boone to quip: Carpenter’s homers capped a dominant weekend for the Yankees, who wound outscoring the Cubs 26-4 in their final two games.

His ERA has risen from 1.99 to 3.67 in his last two starts. Thompson and Norris walked six in the first two innings, and all scored. Signing with the Yankees could not have worked out better. Kyle Higashioka added his first two home runs this season, after hitting seven in spring training. The Yankees outscored Chicago 28-5 in the three-game series and improved to 15-4 against the Cubs, 23-4 including World Series sweeps in 1932 and ’38. The Cubs are 0-12 in the Bronx. ... Thompson allowed five runs — three earned — three hits and three walks while getting two outs. “That’s impressive.” “I was confident with what I was doing at the plate, was hopeful that this would potentially happen, and now it’s been a lot of fun to see it play it out,” Carpenter said. “Them having the faith to sign me it means a lot,” Carpenter said, “and I’m enjoying it.” Carpenter raised his average to .333 with 13 RBIs. Signed on May 26 because of injuries to Giancarlo Stanton and Josh Donaldson, Carpenter became the first Yankees player to hit six home runs in his first 10 games and just the second major leaguer to have six homers among his first seven hits after Colorado’s Trevor Story in 2016. “I put him in the garage for a week and pulled him out for a spin,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. Carpenter added a two-run drive against Alec Mills in the sixth for his first multihomer game in four years and an RBI double in the seventh against Sean Newcomb as the Yankees sent Chicago to its sixth straight loss. “It’s pretty hard to be in Triple-A and imagine that you’ll get this opportunity,” the 36-year-old said.

Yankees' 6 burning questions: Will Matt Carpenter play in left? All ... (nj.com)

Six burning questions for the New York Yankees on the off day following their three-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs.

What’s going to happen with Chapman? Aroldis Chapman is slated to throw off the mound on the field Tuesday at Yankee Stadium. It’s unclear how much longer the Yankees will wait after that to activate him from the injured list (Achilles tendinitis). Will they try to force him back into the closer role? Estevan Florial could play defense and provide pop in the majors for some team right now, but the Yankees probably like the depth he provides. You want to see how this is going to play out and we’re obviously confident in this group and what we’re capable of. The guess here is that the Yankees may give him low-leverage spots as he works back from the injury … but then settle him into higher-leverage lefty hitter lanes late in games. Anthony Volpe is probably the only no-no in the organization, though Oswald Peraza is super talented and probably up there with him. Look, with Joey Gallo struggling — and with enough plate appearances to think that this is just who Gallo is going to be in the Bronx — the Yankees are going to need to consider an outfield upgrade at some point before the trade deadline. With Carpenter’s red-hot bat looking more and more for real, the Yankees need to find more consistent at-bats for him. Trevino and Higashioka genuinely like each other, work well together, and put their brains together when working with the pitching staff, which has been among the best. It’s not like the Yankees haven’t tried. The rest is a bit unclear, which happens when you’re the best. The lineup has been terrifying, particularly at home. The starting rotation has been dominant, led by Nestor Cortes, everybody’s preseason AL Cy Young pick.

The Yankees struck gold with Matt Carpenter, here's how they can ... (Empire Sports Media)

The Yankees have been great this season, but unsung hero Matt Carpenter deserves to play more because of his efforts...

This means that Steamer believes Carpenter will be 4% better than the average hitter for the rest of the season, and ZiPS thinks Carpenter will be 14% better than the average hitter for the rest of the season. The Yankees are winning, the offense is the best in baseball, the pitching is the best in baseball, and there are a lot of reasons for it. The Yankees are rolling, and Matt Carpenter has been an unsung hero who should (and probably will) be featured more in the lineup and in the pinch-hitting regard as well. The comparison I’d make for Carp is with 2012 Raul Ibanez, who posted a 102 wRC+ and 1.63 Win Probability Added in 130 games, with a lot of his usage being as a pinch hitter. That’s good for an abysmal 83 OPS+ and just a 1.9 fWAR. In New York? He’s almost matched his HR total in the 180 games he played between 2020 and 2021. This is where Matt Carpenter can be the primary pinch-hitter; and he’d excel.

Matt Carpenter Recaptures Old Form With Historic Start to Yankees ... (Sports Illustrated)

New York Yankees 3B Matt Carpenter had a career game in a win over the Chicago Cubs, adding to his historic numbers over his first stretch with the Yankees.

Was able to put in a lot of good work and have a lot of people help me kind of get it back. "You're seeing the fruits of some labor that he put in over the wintertime ... from a guy that's been a really talented player in this league for a while." Carpenter made it clear, however, that he's in a great place across the board. That way, regardless of who is listed on the lineup card a few hours before first pitch, he's always in a prime position to succeed and already prepared when adversity comes knocking. Just has jumped right in with those guys and become a huge part of this and in the opportunities that he's gotten, he's obviously taken full advantage of it and really excited that he's on our team." "A lot of the guys in our front office and our analysts were paying close attention to him," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. That's what happens when you join the best team in baseball with a healthy group of position players. Playing time is still going to be tough for Carpenter to secure in his new threads going forward. That's when the Yankees—who had been monitoring Carpenter's availability for months and needed reinforcements on their MLB roster—pounced, signing him to a Major League contract. Carpenter proceeded to sign a minor league deal with the Rangers, ending up in Triple-A Round Rock after he didn't make Texas' Opening Day roster. Carpenter is best known for his extended career in St. Louis, an 11-year stretch where the bearded slugger built a reputation as a versatile infielder with plenty of pop from the left side. "I don't really have words for it," Carpenter said after the blowout victory, New York's 11th win in their last 12 games.

Matt Carpenter makes Yankees history after two more homers vs Cubs (Fox News)

Matt Carpenter has been on a tear since joining the New York Yankees late last month and he made history in Sunday's win over the Chicago Cubs.

In 1,329 games for the Cardinals, Carpenter batted .262 with a .816 OPS and 155 homers. "I’ve played the game long enough to know what it feels like and looks like when I’m right," Carpenter said, via MLB.com. "This is certainly that. I can have competitive at-bats every time I get in there. "I was confident with what I was doing at the plate, was hopeful that this would potentially happen, and now it's been a lot of fun to see it play it out," he said. Carpenter spent most of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals. He led the National League in hits in 2013 with 199. Carpenter was 3-for-4 with two home runs and seven RBIs and made history in the process, becoming the first Yankees player to hit six home runs in his first 10 games and the second major leaguer to have six homers in his first seven hits since Trevor Story did it for the Colorado Rockies in 2016.

Matt Carpenter Helps Yankees Crush Cubs (The New York Times)

Chicago's inability to maintain momentum after its 2016 championship underscores how unusual the Yankees' consistency is: They are on their way to a 30th ...

In any case, the rest of the schedule is really just a long — but fun — warm-up for the postseason. It was the hardest-hit homer in the majors this season, at 119.8 miles per hour off the bat, and the poor Cubs pitcher, a rookie right-hander named Matt Swarmer, ducked and turned — eyes wide, mouth agape — as it sizzled overhead. On Saturday, Stanton hammered a curveball off the facing of the low-hanging second deck in left; it bounded back over the lower seats and landed on the field. Their payroll, around $247 million, ranks third overall behind the Mets and the Dodgers. They sustain a star-driven business strategy with imports like Stanton and the star starter Gerrit Cole, but develop from within and hunt for bargains (Nestor Cortes, Clay Holmes, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Jose Trevino) like everyone else. This kept with tradition; the Cubs have still never won in the Bronx, dropping all 12 matchups, including four World Series games in the 1930s. The Cubs, at 23-36, are full of such placeholders, a roster of mobile trailers keeping up day-to-day operations at a construction site. “Now with the expanded playoffs, this team, they’re going to be in it, I would say, every year.” You’re not going to get everybody, but that’s the mind-set.” Didn’t it feel like the start of a long run of perpetual contention? Robertson, a 37-year-old right-hander, is having another casually dominant season, hard to hit with lots of strikeouts. That’s why it’s really remarkable here — I know they haven’t won it since ’09, but they have been really good for a long time. Both his championship teams were big spenders in big markets — first the Boston Red Sox and then the Chicago Cubs. But he never thought either team would always contend.

Yankees destroy Cubs with 18 runs to complete sweep (New York Post)

Matt Carpenter and Kyle Higashioka each homered twice as the Yankees piled on early to finish off a three-game sweep of the Cubs with an 18-4 laugher.

Carpenter delivered his first home run of the day in the second inning, a three-run shot to right field that made it 8-1. For good measure, with a 13-run lead over the Cubs (23-36) in the eighth inning, Carpenter made a diving stop at third base to throw out a runner at first. The Yankees erased that quickly, though, as Aaron Judge singled to lead off the bottom of the first before Cubs right-hander Keegan Tompson walked three straight batters with one out to tie the game. To be able to do it in New York City for the best team in baseball, and them having the faith to sign me, it means a lot. I was able to put in a lot of good work and have a lot of people help me get it back, so it’s pretty rewarding. Lightning in Stanley Cup Final The Avalanche have been Stanley Cup favorites all season, and now have a chance to cash tickets for anyone who bet on the chalk to win it all. There has been a desire to add him but it hasn’t resulted in much stability or in his case with Edmonton, playing time; the 34-year-old was a healthy scratch in 15 of their playoff games this spring. Kulak did a good job on their back end down the stretch, logging a little over 17 minutes a night down the stretch and in the playoffs and he would give them some extra depth for next season. Wong has been the leadoff man for most of the year, with Christian Yelich taking over atop the lineup in the past three games while Wong has been out. The Lightning will be taking on the Colorado Avalanche in the Stanley Cup Final, which begins at 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday. The Avalanche advanced to the championship by sweeping the Edmonton Oilers. The last time Colorado advanced to the Stanley Cup Final was 2001, when they defeated the New Jersey Devils in seven games. The Colorado Avalanche take on the Tampa Bay Lightning for the right to lift the Stanley Cup. The Lightning have a chance to pull off the first three-peat since the Islanders won four straight in the early '80s. The Avalanche, meanwhile, will be vying for their first Cup since 2001. Let's take a look at the odds to win the Stanley Cup Final, courtesy of WynnBET. 2022 Stanley Cup Final Odds Avalanche -250 Lightning +200 Avalanche Favored vs. Their only loss at home came in Game 3 of their opening round against the Maple Leafs. Andrei Vasilevskiy is Lights Out in Series Clinching Games If the Avalanche want to win the Stanley Cup, I would strongly advise that they don't give the Lightning a chance to close the series out. The most a rival team could offer him in free agency would be $183.6M. Washington drafted Beal out of Florida with the third pick in the 2012 draft. Avalanche Are Undefeated on the Road in 2022 Playoffs This trend won't come into play until Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final when the series heads to Tampa Bay, but the Avalanche are an undefeated 7-0 on the road during this year's playoffs. There are plenty of angles to look at when deciding who to bet on in the upcoming Stanley Cup Final between the Colorado Avalanche and Tampa Bay Lightning. As always, you should take a peek at how each team has performed in the regular season as well as in the playoffs, but also keep in mind some key betting trends that will carry over into the Final. As of right now, the Avalanche are -190 favorites at WynnBET, and the Lightning are +155 underdogs.
