Brannigan was the next batter and after he touched a ball that went just foul, he crushed a fastball over the wall in left center to give the Irish the lead. The Irish turned the game on its head in the seventh inning and it got started with a ground-rule double from Carter Putz. LaManna stepped into the box with two outs and took a fastball the other way that cleared the wall in right to tie the game up. A team that was in last place in the SEC West in May put together one of the most improbable runs imaginable to get to this point, and Ole Miss has reached the College World Series for the second time in Mike Bianco's tenure in Oxford and the first time since 2014. The Longhorns will await to see when they kick off their Omaha trip with the conclusion of the Super Regionals on Tuesday. Tristan Stevens, already staked to a 4-0 lead, would allow one run in the bottom of the first, in what would a gutsy performance for six innings of one-run baseball and five strikeouts. They would go on to add two more runs on solo home runs from Trey Faltine and Silas Ardoin, eventually securing the 11-1 victory and yet another CWS appearance for Texas. A three-run Skyler Messinger home run and a solo home run from Dylan Campbell saw Texas come all the way back to take a 8-7 lead into the ninth inning and on the verge of a game three. Once again Dylan Campbell would play the hero for Texas, as he would lift a bases loaded walk-off single to the right field wall to force a winner take all game three. The Longhorn offense would pull within one in the eighth inning, as a Silas Ardoin RBI double and Jack O'Dowd RBI groundout made it 8-7 ECU and appeared to completely shift the momentum in Texas' favor.

Tennessee Eliminated From Baseball Playoffs by Notre Dame (The New York Times)

Even 57 wins do not necessarily get you a baseball championship, as the Volunteers found out the hard way.

Tennessee is the third straight No. 1 seed not even to make the eight-team World Series, following Arkansas in 2021 and U.C.L.A. in 2019 (the 2020 tournament was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic). The brashness of some of Tennessee’s “maniacs” this year rubbed a few opponents the wrong way. And Tennessee seemed as if it would escape the series when it led, 3-1, in the seventh inning in the decider. But in the opener, Notre Dame hit home runs in each of the first three innings and took a 5-0 lead against the Tennessee ace Blade Tidwell, then hung on to win, 8-6. Blame it on the variance of baseball — or some kind of College World Series curse, if you like. The University of Tennessee was widely heralded as the best college baseball team in a generation.

Notre Dame baseball is headed for the College World Series - and it ... (USA TODAY)

Notre Dame didn't look the part of a College World Series program when postseason commenced. Irish sure look the part now as one of final eight.

When Jack Brannigan, the next hitter, stepped in and, in Jarrett’s words, “stepped on” a Chase Burns fastball and drove that out as well, it basically drove Notre Dame to Nebraska. Another out to Nebraska. Early Monday morning, earlier than this column was crafted, Notre Dame (40-15) learned of its opening-game opponent in Omaha. Come Friday (time TBD later Monday, but a 1 p.m. start would be sweet), it will be Texas (47-20), which worked through a lengthy weather delay (sound familiar?) to win a super regional at East Carolina in a game that ended just before. Had it backed into a corner and the Volunteers never could scramble out. Notre Dame won now. Forty-nine times this season when Tennessee took the lead into a seventh inning, it left with a win. When Sunday’s score went final, it sent certain shock through the college baseball world. Really, though it shouldn’t have been a surprise. Notre Dame erased a 3-1 deficit late, a time when Tennessee slams shut any door of opportunity on any and all opponents. Get home on a Monday, have just enough time to unpack, do laundry, catch their collective breath on a Tuesday, then leave again on a Wednesday. That last time, Notre Dame set out for Tennessee to play the nation’s No. 1 team, a seemingly unbeatable/untouchable team. Notre Dame didn’t win Sunday’s decisive super-regional game so much as it just took it. Wrestled it away from a team and a fan base that honestly, really didn’t deserve it. One media member mentioned to Jarrett that it sure would be nice if they could do it all again the following week – gather in the Irish lounge, talk baseball, take the next postseason step.

Seth Stephenson's RBI single in the bottom of the inning and a run-scoring double in the fifth put Tennessee up 3-1. Notre Dame head coach Link Jarrett touted Tennessee as "the best No. 1 team in any college sport this year" entering the super regional. Luc Lipcius homered in the first to give the Vols a 1-0 lead. Ryan Cole reached first and Coetzee held on a throwing error by Vols third baseman Trey Lipscomb. Kirby Connell replaced Sewell and the runners advanced on a sac bunt by Jared Miller. Putz hit the first pitch he saw for a two-run double and Jack Zyska singled in Putz to cap the scoring. Findlay held the Volunteers in check from there, allowing a single and two walks, while striking out four. Camden Sewell hit Brooks Coetzee with a pitch to open the inning.

Coetzee remained out after the replay was reviewed and nine-hole hitter Spencer Myers lined out to center field on the next pitch to squash the uprising. The Vols went up 2-1 when Jarrett had a quick hook with Simon after his third walk through an inning and a third. Six of Notre Dame’s eight hits came in the last three innings. “On Sunday, we talked about the last hour, whether it’s practice or the last three innings of the game. “I cannot express how tough they are in the last hour of these games. That guy never asked to start, didn’t care, it was just, ‘Coach, let me pitch.’ That’s the philosophy of that staff.” Findlay entered the game in the fifth inning with no outs.
