Tennessee baseball ready to fight for a College World Series title (The Athletic)

Tennessee has played all season with a target on its back, but the Volunteers aren't shrinking from the spotlight as they chase a title.

A series win would send Tennessee back to Omaha for a second consecutive year; the team has never made back-to-back trips to the World Series. The Volunteers may have known for months that they possessed the talent to challenge for an NCAA title. And it certainly would not have gotten the Volunteers this far. “This year, we kind of expect to do things versus it was a surprise when we did it before.” Indeed. Beck had hit 14 homers by the end of the SEC tournament. They went 13-4 and lost only one series the rest of the way. They entered the SEC Tournament on May 26 still ranked the No. 1 team in the nation, with a 49-7 record. The Volunteers won the two remaining games against Alabama and retained their ranking despite opening the series with a loss. And the team’s No. 1 designation in the NCAA tournament, the highest seed in program history. Vitello had delivered a message on his way out of the dugout following his ejection. He became the first in the program to hit at least 20 home runs since 2009. Without Vitello at the helm, Tennessee outscored opponents 44-11 and held other teams to a .170 average.

NCAA Baseball Tournament: Why Tennessee is a complete ... (Rocky Top Talk)

Three things are clear when it comes to the Tennessee Volunteers on the baseball diamond: Their offense is a juggernaut, their pitching staff is lethal, ...

Tennessee has the best ERA in the country (2.38). In fact, the difference between the Vols and second-place Southern Mississippi (3.17) is almost the same difference between the Golden Eagles and the 13th-best team ERA (Vanderbilt, 3.95). The Volunteers’ pitching staff has been that dominant and it has been a complete staff effort. Like their ERA, the difference between their dominant WHIP and second-place Southern Miss (1.14) is the same as the difference between the Golden Eagles and the 18th-best WHIP in Division I. They have the second-most shutouts (nine) in the country, behind only Vanderbilt (10). The first pitch on Friday night is set for 6 p.m. ET (ESPN2), with Game 2 of the series set for 2 p.m. ET (ESPN) Saturday afternoon. It’s the reason they have so much confidence and swagger no matter what the score is. There’s a reason Vitello seems to have so much confidence in his team, no matter who the player might be. Then again, blowouts every game wouldn’t be fun after a while, so the heartburn is certainly worth it, especially if it ends in a W. The confidence stems from the fact that the Volunteers are dominant both at the plate and on the pitcher’s mound. The Volunteers have a team slash line of .311/.421/.607 (1.028 OPS). That’s insane, to say the least. The Vols can win that. In fact, they are confident that they will win each game, no matter what the score is. The Vols can win that. Three things are clear when it comes to the Tennessee Volunteers on the baseball diamond: Their offense is a juggernaut, their pitching staff is lethal, and no lead is safe. The games are honestly more fun when they are close like that.

Then, in the championship of the Knoxville Regional, Tennessee once again fell behind by four runs through the first four innings and trailed 4-3 entering the ninth inning. Tennessee entered tonight’s game as the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. If you think Tennessee baseball coach Tony Vitello barking at the umpire is spontaneous, look closer. There's a method to arguing the strike zone.

Drew has got a pretty good view because he’s right in the middle of the field.” “On one pitch, I threw a curveball, and it couldn’t have been more middle-middle,” Connell said. And he’s got the best view in the house,” said Connell, who touts a team-best 1.45 ERA. He’s a disciplined hitter, touting the best batting average (.373) and fewest strikeouts (32) of any UT starter. (Vitello) trusts him a lot. “If Drew throws his hands up, then (Vitello) knows it should’ve been a strike.”

Being Tennessee baseball finally caught up with Tennessee — at ... (Knoxville News Sentinel)

Tennessee baseball's comeuppance began to materialize on a night in which Notre Dame was better in all areas in the Knoxville Super Regional.

Got to be willing to take the full ride with these Vols, no matter where it goes. They’ve extended a middle finger to the rest of the sport while being ostracized and villainized and preferring it that way. Gilbert’s ejection could end up as his final moment in a Tennessee uniform. Gilbert dented his team’s chances at reaching Omaha. But it was on brand for his team. It was a quick hook for an umpire in a game this significant, but if you read Gilbert’s lips on replay, there was little doubt about the reason. They slugged home runs in each of the first four innings, chasing Vols starter Blade Tidwell and handing Tennessee an 8-1 deficit that was its biggest of the season. Drew Gilbert’s ejection while arguing a strike call mid-at-bat – the count was 1-1 – means he’ll be sidelined for Saturday’s Game 2. Only the first of a best-of-three series. He plays with a lot of passion at times,” Vitello said. the rest of college baseball had been a mismatch. The Vols, to be fair, brought some of that on themselves. Tennessee’s team is like an overgrown little leaguer who brings a birth certificate to games only to have other parents still refuse to accept he or she is the correct age.

For the second straight year, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish baseball team are in the Super Regionals as one of the last 16 teams standing.

He came back out for the ninth inning and got one out before giving up another Tennessee home run to make it a two run game. In the bottom half of the inning Trey Lipscomb got a run back for Tennessee with a solo home run that chased Temple from the game. Austin Temple, who started the game for Notre Dame and worked his way out of trouble in the first two innings, finally cracked in the third. Notre Dame came into the series against the top ranked Volunteers knowing that they would need a combination of offense and pitching to win. A year after losing in three games to the eventual national champions, the task this year for the Irish is to go to Knoxville and beat the #1 team in the country, the Tennessee Volunteers two out of three. For the second straight year, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish baseball team are in the Super Regionals as one of the last 16 teams standing.

The Cardinal finished with eight homers, their most in a game since 2004, with Brock Jones connecting three times. "There's a lot of fight in this team," Texas coach David Pierce said. "I'm glad we won, but I'm really glad to see us win a game that's not 15-7," said Schlossnagle, who got a cooler of water poured over him as the team celebrated outside the dugout. "At this time a year ago I was waking up consistently at 3:30 in the morning in a full body sweat," he said. "This team has proven it from the day we started it until right now. Cortland Lawson doubled and moved to third on a single by Seth Stephenson. One out later, Jordan Beck hit a three-run shot to make it 5-0. "I've been saying all year long, you're going to run into great pitchers. "I had just left a place that was so comfortable. Jackson Dennies relieved Bertrand and walked Jared Dickey before yielding a single to Christian Moore. Lipcius made it 9-0 with a three-run shot. Tennessee was clinging to a 1-0 lead -- on Trey Lipscomb's RBI double in the first inning -- heading into the top of the fifth. The Vols have never won the event, finishing second in 1951.
