Rangers should've never left door open for Lightning, plus reviewing ... (CBSSports.com)

The Belmont Stakes is this weekend, and we're here to get you ready for it. - Benjamin: "1. Tom Brady (Patriots) -- It's cliche, at this point, to discuss the winning aura that emanates from Brady, but as long as he's in theNFL, few players -- let alone QBs -- merit more trust. He had one in a win-or-go-home Game 6 against the Maple Leafs in the first round of the playoffs and he had one in the series-clinching Game 4 against the Panthers in the second round. ...possesses unteachable creativity in and outside the pocket, and as long as he's paired with Andy Reid, it's tough to bet against his title chances. 2. Aaron Rodgers (Packers) -- Like Brady, A-Rod has only shifted into a higher gear with age, returning to high-volume stardom under Matt LaFleur as the NFL's reigning repeat MVP." - Porter: "The big winners on Thursday were not Greg Norman and the LIV Golf league, but rather the USGA, R&A, PGA of America and Augusta National. When the humdrum of everyday tour life is split and replicated over and over again, it only makes golf's 'postseason' -- if that's what we want to call it -- even more important. To sign up and get this in your inbox, fill out the information below. They know this, too, and it is the reason they likely won't stand in the way of any regular-season tour that pops up." - Bengel: "Tampa Bay has a 8-2 all-time record when leading 3-2 in a best-of-seven series. 2. Josh Allen (Bills) -- It's fitting that the Bills' last two seasons have ended in playoff thrillers against the Chiefs, because Allen is the closest thing to Mahomes in terms of the contemporary prototype under center -- big, athletic, and wired to make the big play." Let's face it: It's never easy to rank quarterbacks best to worst. Shortly thereafter,Brandon Hagel's empty-netter sealed the game.

Lightning-Rangers Game 5 report card: Taking away the eyes (Tampa Bay Times)

So, when you've got two goalies playing the way the Lightning's Andrei Vasilevskiy and Rangers' Igor Shesterkin have in the Eastern Conference final, you've got ...

Less than two minutes into the game, Kucherov beat Shesterkin high on the glove side after a cross-corner dump pass from Stamkos but hit the crossbar. Lightning forwards Nikita Kucherov and Nick Paul both got pucks past Shesterkin in the first period. He was there for his teammates in the third period, as well, stopping a Ryan Lindgren shot from the right post and a Frank Vatrano wraparound attempt. Bogosian made up for the gaffe in the third period by preventing a potential go-ahead goal. But Palat got caught up ice and was still outside the blue line when Lindgren collected the puck along the left-side boards. Lightning forwards did a good job of getting close to Shesterkin and blocking his view, while the Tampa Bay defense mostly boxed out well in front of Vasilevskiy.

Lightning Win Over Rangers Puts Tampa One Victory From Stanley ... (The New York Times)

Though they were facing the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning, and though they had needed seven games to advance from each of the first two ...

The Rangers won Game 2 at home, 3-2, and took a 2-0 lead in Game 3 in Tampa. But that was the high-water mark. They came back twice against the Hurricanes in the next round, and won another Game 7. The Rangers were called for just two in-game penalties and the Lightning one. Defenseman Ryan Lindgren scored for his first point of the series and second goal of the playoffs via a speculative flick from near the boards that maybe was intended for a deflection. In Game 4, the Lightning dominated in a 4-1 victory. The Lightning at times in the early going looked less like the two-time defending champions and more like a team awed by the occasion. After the second period, the gap in shots was gone, and both goalies had made exactly 15 saves on 16 shots. The Rangers finally got theirs at 10:29 of the second period not from dominance, but almost from happenstance. And this came from a Rangers team that had been outshot, 153-127, in the first four games. Even after losing two games in Tampa to allow the Lightning to tie the series, there was an unshakable sense of confidence in Rangerland coming into Game 5. The Rangers started the night promisingly. And all the more frustrating because the key Tampa goals came not entirely from the power trio of Steven Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov and Ondrej Palat, but also from an unlikely defenseman taking a couple of low-percentage shots.

Rangers' Glenn Otto Needs to Avoid Doing 'Too Much' (Sports Illustrated)

The right-hander set a career-high in walks in his last outing, but still managed to find a way to win.

Otto, 26, has won his last three starts, which is a career-best in his young Major League career. “I was just trying to do too much,” Otto said. Otto threw just five innings in that game, but he actually started the game with four innings of hitless baseball, which don’t quite underscore Otto’s control issues. One of four prospects to come to the Rangers in the Joey Gallo trade last year, he was the first to make the Major Leagues and the first to be a part of a regular rotation at his position group. “I was just trying to be a little too fine. I just need to come (inside). If I can get ahead of hitters, I can.”

The shaping of Texas Rangers pitcher Martín Pérez (The Dallas Morning News)

When the Rangers signed Martín Pérez in the post-lockout goldrush that was free agency, they didn't so much get a different pitcher as they did a different.

“The more we talked, the more it became apparent to us that he had some interesting elements,” Parnell said. He threw it less than 40% of the time in the Minnesota-Boston years. He was younger than most of the guys on the list. When the season was over, he prepared for the next stop wherever – and, due to the impending lockout – whenever it would be. He was also in the process of going through a divorce and trying to co-parent two young children, Malena Kate, now six, and Martín Jr., now three. Over his two years in Boston, he slowly started dialing back its usage just enough to retain a little more mystery. A day later, he added it to his repertoire. “That was the lowest point of my career,” Pérez said. In June, he went to a barbecue at the Kansas City home of Royals catcher Salvador Pérez with some teammates, including fellow pitcher Yohander Méndez, who had been scheduled to pitch the next day. If there is one thing that has marked his return to the Rangers after three years in Minnesota and Boston is this level of self-awareness. He’s heard lots over the years, but it wasn’t until he really started listening that it made a difference. He is no longer a prodigy nor the prodigal prospect.

“Maybe there’s a couple others that were borderline that maybe we deserved, but it wasn’t like they had seven power plays and we had one. “The one penalty we kinda forced the call, cause there were six guys playing– they were forced to call that one,” Andrew Copp noted. The most egregious was when Jan Rutta put his arms around Kaapo Kakko’s neck and head in a tie game during the third period. Unfortunately for the Rangers, there were several obvious calls in the game that would have put their potent power play on the ice to work. There was also an awful call on K’Andre Miller earlier in the game, where he was called for hook. An inability to score at even strength, difficulty clearing the crease, and too many turnovers that lead to offensive chances against are why they are in this position.

DFW Domination: Rangers' Michael Young No. 1? Hello, Marcus ... (Sports Illustrated)

Home successful home, a Semien sighting, gasping at gas and cooled by "The Fonz", all in this week's DFW Sports Notebook.

*Part of avoiding “wrong place at the wrong time” is not putting yourself in peril. Or go – on foot, preferably – down to this new joint in Plano where the vibe is a 1920s service station (but the prices are likely 2020s). In other words, avoid OT Tavern on Lower Greenville in Dallas. The same bar where the incident took place involving Cowboys’ cornerback Kelvin Joseph is a regular shoot ’em up. Detail that is a tad more important than passing yards: Staubach was 13-7 in playoff games with two Super Bowl wins; Prescott is 1-3 and never advanced past the Divisional Round. *Think of the rich heritage of Cowboys’ quarterbacks and, sorry, Dak Prescott won’t roll off my lips in the first breath. Trade in the SUV for a hybrid. Exploiting our pain at the pump, ExxonMobil pocketed $5.5 billion in profits in the first three months of 2022. Experts say supply will catch up to demand and prices will dip back to normal - $3-a-gallon(ish) – but not until the end of the year. A playoff record of 7-1 (.875) at Texas Stadium ain’t bad, but it’s not Nadal in Paris. Modano, however, lifted the Cup in Buffalo and had to watch the New Jersey Devils skate it on Reunion’s ice after going 0-3 at home in the 2000 Finals. Before AAC opened in 2001, Modano went 31-18 (.632) in home playoff games. Then came the war in Ukraine and, in response, countries refused to buy Russian oil. *Like you (probably), I’m torn about Dalton Schultz. On one hand, c’mon now, the Cowboys’ tight end is no Mike Ditka, Billie Joe Dupree, Jay Novacek or Jason Witten. Do you really skip offseason activities in hopes of a bigger contract when – let’s face it – you’re an inferior blocker?

“I fully expect them to play well [Saturday] night and hopefully get back to the Garden for Game 7.’’ Messier used the word “hopefully,’’ which means he was hedging his bet. “You cannot let that permeate into the room. On June 10 in NYR history: Keenan rumors during the SCF (Bluelinestation.com)

On June 10 in New York Rangers history the attention wasn't on the Stanley Cup Finals, it was on rumors that coach Mike Keenan was leaving.

Lionel Bouvrette was a goalie born on this date in 1934 in Hawkesbury, Ontario. He played one game for the Rangers on March 18, 1943 when he was loaned to New York by the Montreal Canadiens after their number on goalie, Jimmy Franks, was injured and the Blueshirts had no backup. Ian MacIntosh was born on June 10, 1927 in Selkirk, Manitoba. He was a left wing who played only four games with the Rangers in 1952-53. It was typical of “Iron Mike” that he could prompt this kind of chatter while his team was in the Stanley Cup Final. He could see the writing on the wall and knew that the 1994 Rangers were built to win immediately, mostly through trades that he insisted on. There were reports that Keenan coveted a GM slot and that he had a handshake agreement to take the Detroit job in 1993, but then-GM Bryan Murray talked owner Mike Ilitch out of it. Tom Dewar was born on this date in 1913 in Frobisher, Saskatchewan. A defenseman , he played nine games in the 1942-43 season for the Rangers. Nicknamed “Moose” he left the Rangers to be the player-coach of the Brooklyn Crescents of the ECHL. Chad Johnson was a goaltender, born on this date in 1986 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Drafted by the Penguins, he was traded to New York in 2009 and he played six games over two seasons as a back up to Henrik Lundqvist. Over the next seven years he played for seven different teams and is one of a handful of players who toiled for all three teams from New York State.

The Rangers have shown they’re capable of defeating the Lightning, and they have the intangibles and the X-factor in Shesterkin to help see it through. In the playoffs this season, Kreider has scored 10 goals, tied with Mika Zibanejad for the Rangers lead. The work ethic hasn't waned in the intervening time. And yet, the Rangers need more.

New York surrendered four consecutive games to the Lightning, who will attempt to defend their back-to-back Stanley Cup championships against the Colorado ...

With 110 points during the regular season, the Rangers had their best point total in seven years. They finished off the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference finals nearly a week ago. Stamkos, coming out of the penalty box, raced toward the net, took a pass from Kucherov and shot the puck. The Lightning won the series in convincing fashion, dominating the Rangers in the clinching game, overcoming a two-game deficit and winning the last four games of the series outscoring the Rangers 12-5. The Rangers came alive toward the end of the first period. The Rangers mustered several shots, but they were all blocked. It was Stamkos’s eighth goal of the playoffs. They skated quickly, made sharp passes and scooped up errant passes by the Rangers. They peppered Shesterkin and attempted 25 shots in the first period while the Rangers made only 12. The Lightning were the far sharper team from start the game to the finish. He robbed Nikita Kucherov, Tampa’s top scorer, when he tried to backhand the puck past him. The young Rangers, in the playoffs for the first time in five seasons, failed to score at even strength in the last four games of the series. Shesterkin held Tampa at bay, even cleaning up his own mess.

Thanks to the superb defensive efforts of the Lightning, Vasilevskiy wasn't nearly as busy as his New York counterpart. If the team in front of him had been able to create any offense at all, we might be preparing for a Game 7 on Monday night. In Games 1 and 2, the Rangers scored a combined eight goals at five-on-five despite generating fewer high-danger chances. While Tampa Bay gets some criticism for the way it circumvents the NHL's salary cap, you have to tip your cap to general manager Julien BriseBois and this group of core players. That finishing touch ran out against a strong defensive team and the best goaltender in the world. Then the Lightning rattled off back-to-back championships in 2020 and 2021, and they are four wins away from making it three in a row. The Tampa Bay Lightning are going to the Stanley Cup Final for the third season in a row. Lightning captain Steven Stamkos played hero with a pair of goals, including the game-winner late in the third that banked in off his body after a great save by Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin. Beyond that, Andrei Vasilevskiy did what he does in elimination games, which is build a forcefield around his own net. Everywhere outside of the crease, the Rangers got thoroughly outplayed, and their five-on-five offense was non-existent.

3 Keys: Rangers at Lightning, Game 6 of Eastern Conference Final (NHL.com)

New York was able to get away from that matchup with the last change on home ice in Game 5, but Kreider, Zibanejad and Vatrano had another quiet game. It's screened shots and it's hitting in off shinpads and whatnot, so we've got to create those greasy opportunities for us." The Lightning have had more success against Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin with traffic in front for screens and deflections. "Our mindset has just got to be the same as the last three games," Lightning forward Patrick Maroon said. New York's 25 shots on goal in Game 5 were its fewest in the series. Now we've lost three in a row and we've got to battle back," Rangers coach Gerard Gallant said. Kreider, Vatrano and Zibanejad have not scored a 5-on-5 goal since. Although Vasilevskiy's 12-9 record for his career in potential series-clinching games doesn't stand out, his 1.65 GAA, .942 save percentage and NHL record six shutouts in those games do. "It's just focus on the opportunity at hand, the opportunity that we've earned," Lightning defenseman Ryan McDonagh said. Tampa Bay is bidding to become the first team to win the Stanley Cup in three consecutive seasons since the New York Islanders won four straight championships from 1980-83. "We've used that mentality in the past. But patience is also important when facing the Lightning.

Conference final: Lightning-Rangers Game 6 live updates (Tampa Bay Times)

Tampa Bay can clinch a third straight Stanley Cup final berth with a victory tonight in Tampa.

Maybe. But they might already have gotten it in Game 5, with New York playing on home ice, where it had won eight straight, and needing a win to regain control of a series that seemed to be slipping from its grasp. The Lightning know how to close out a playoff series, because they created their own blueprint while winning 10 over the past three seasons. Is it tilting precipitously in the Bolts’ direction? Is the series over? The Islanders had opportunities in 2020 and ‘21. The Maple Leafs had one in Round 1. Stamkos’ game-winner came with 6:32 remaining, just 21 seconds after Frank Vatrano tied the game with a power-play goal.

Leury García to third. Bottom of the 5th: Danny Mendick reaches on a fielder’s choice to center field. Lucas Giolito didn’t necessarily have his best stuff today, as evidenced by low velocity fastballs to start the game (for his standards), but dug deep and blanked the Rangers through four innings. Lucas would be the first to tell you that he wasn’t at his best today, as he’ll look to bounce back and post a quality start in his next start, which is projected to come next Friday at Houston. We will provide you with any updates on his health as they come. Luis Robert singles to center field. Bottom of the 2nd: AJ Pollock singles to center field. Danny Mendick to second. What else is there to say about Jake Burger at this point? AJ Pollock to second. With the loss, the White Sox fall to 27-30 and remain in third place in the AL Central. Lucas Giolito went five innings and allowed four earned runs in his 10th start of the season, striking out eight.

Rangers' bright future doesn't ease sting of this loss: 'Empty' (New York Post)

There was no telling Chris Kreider or Mika Zibanejad that the young Rangers had overachieved by advancing as far as the conference final.

Game 5 was decided by a Lightning winner at 18:10 of the third period. Game 3 was decided by a Lightning winner at 19:18 of the third period. And then, in this final game of the year, there was a rather mysterious scratch of Kaapo Kakko that head coach Gerard Gallant refused to address when queried about the decision. The lines were jumbled at the start. The problem was that the Blueshirts never were able to get to the net and never were able to move Andrei Vasilevskiy out of his comfort zone. Fact is, the Rangers scored one goal at five-on-five over the final four games of the series and it was scored by Ryan Lindgren. Because on the ensuing shift, Stamkos blew by Jacob Trouba down the left boards after taking a two-on-one feed from Nikita Kucherov and cut to the net. This was the team’s 20th game in 40 days and nights. The problem was that the Rangers had one goal again for the third straight game. There is no denying that the Rangers took a quantum leap this year, even though much of the progress was built on the brilliance of Igor Shesterkin. The 26-year-netminder honored his Hart- and Vezina-finalist season throughout this series and throughout this game in which the Blueshirts would have been blown out if not for his work. The Rangers chased all game. There was no telling them that the future appears bright.

Get a recap of the New York Rangers vs. Tampa Bay Lightning hockey game.

He made some unbelievable saves to keep them in it, but I think I just felt kind of a calming presence because of the group,” Stamkos said. "They found a way to get the big goal at the big time.” They are trying to become the first to win three straight championships since the New York Islanders claimed four in a row from 1980-83. The Lightning played again without forward Brayden Point, who’s missed 10 games since suffering a lower body injury during Tampa Bay’s Game 7 victory over Toronto in the first round. He was the NHL’s leading goal scorer the previous two postseasons. “And the fact that they they have every excuse in the world to not win because nobody would fault them by saying hey, you won one, you won two, and to come back and and go for a third. “I was just confident in our group that we would find a way, whether it was in regulation or was in overtime. “It was just one of those nights where whether it was the next shift after, whether I scored or someone else scored, it was just a feeling that we were going to get it done.” But we played well, we battled hard, we had a chance to win all those games," Rangers coach Gerard Gallant said. Rangers' Igor Shesterkin shows he belongs with 'best in world' (New York Post)

Andrei Vasilevskiy may be the best goalie in the world, but Igor Shesterkin was the best in this series despite the Lightning ousting the Rangers.

But on this night, and in this series, they were wrong. After the Rangers tied it at 1-1, Shesterkin gave up the game-winner. Shesterkin made an acrobatic save sliding to his left and reaching out for the stop. Shesterkin, however, was the best goaltender in this series. “I’ll be the first to raise my hand and say Vasilevskiy has done that for us. In the end, of course, it wasn’t enough despite the fact that he saved 28 of 30 Tampa Bay shots, many of which were high-quality scoring chances. I thought it was a great series between two strong goaltenders.’’ He did it again in this series.’’ “We’ve had our chances. “He’s a hell of a goalie,’’ Cooper told ESPN during an in-game interview in the second period. He’s a difference-maker.’’ “He gave us a chance to win every night and we got out-chanced in a lot of the games.

The Rangers scored their decisive runs in the 10th inning to put the game away. The Rangers are 3-7 in their last 10 games and still sit four games below .500 and 8.5 games behind the Astros in the AL West, so a win like Saturday’s could provide an important spark. “They found the holes,” Pérez said. From there, Woodward turned things over to his bullpen, and their performance also helped put the Rangers in position to win in extra innings. When Moore came into the game in the eighth inning, he was charged with protecting a 7-7 tie. Corey Seager’s sacrifice fly with the bases loaded trimmed the deficit to four runs, and that set up García’s blast to bring Texas within a run.

“What those guys have done, it’s been a parade down the tunnel, and most of the time they all come back.” Shesterkin required the fewest games to make 600 saves in a single postseason since 1955-56. Stamkos made contact with Shesterkin’s glove as he knocked in his own rebound 21 seconds after Frank Vatrano tied the score, but the goal stood upon review. Less than seven minutes later he reappeared, taking a spin on the ice during a television timeout before returning to the bench. “It’s just that kind of warrior mindset that they have,” coach Jon Cooper said of their return to the ice. Skating toward the bench, he slammed his stick against the wall, breaking it in half.

After it had all ended, Mika Zibanejad sat at a podium alongside Chris Kreider, holding back tears. “It's just denial,” he said. “I'm empty right now.”

That was how the Rangers broke through in Game 7 against the Hurricanes, when Zibanejad had two even-strength assists and seemed to have gotten past his issues. His first shot on net came with 6:55 left in the game, and he would finish with just two. Though he managed to contribute on the power play, he had no answer for the Lightning at five-on-five. … Had nothing to do with it.” A despondent Zibanejad refused to agree. According to some pundits, the Rangers were not a playoff team going into the season but here they are, winning two rounds and coming within two wins of the Final. Tampa Bay outshot the Rangers 30-21 but that’s a very misleading stat because the Lightning were the dominant team and Shesterkin’s play kept the game close. Before the game, Gallant made a controversial roster move by making Kappo Kakko a healthy scratch and dressing fourth line forward Dryden Hunt. The move kinda backfired when Ryan Strome left the game in the second period and did not return. “We battled hard, we tied the game on a pp goal,” Gallant said. The Lightning captain corralled a loose puck at center ice and skated into the Ranger zone. Frank Vatrano blasted a shot past Vasilevskiy to tie the game at one with less than seven minutes left in regulation.
