NBA Finals Game 4 recap: Warriors' trio nears record for Finals wins ... (USA TODAY)

The Celtics and Warriors are now tied 2-2 in the 2022 NBA Finals, thanks to an impressive 43-point performance from an injured Steph Curry.

He was credited with leading Brooklyn from 20 wins in his first season to 42-40 record in 2018-19 — the Nets’ first playoff berth since 2015. The Warriors will have Steph Curry on the floor. Well, Draymond Green received a similar treatment in TD Garden during Game 3, so much so that his wife called on the league to take action. When asked what needs to change for Game 4, Poole told reporters on Thursday, “Just being able to take what the defense gives us. He has 15 fouls and 15 points in the entire series. Green has had foul trouble in the 2022 NBA Finals, fouling out in Game 1 and Game 3. Steve Kerr is shaking up the lineup for Game 4: He started Otto Porter Jr. in place of Kevon Looney. Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green round out the Warriors' starting lineup. This marks his third 30-point plus game of the series, but Curry is going to need some offensive help if the Warriors are going to win this pivotal game on the road. He picked up 2 rebounds, 2 assists and one steal before picking up his second foul and being pulled from the game with 4:18 left in the first. He hit the free throw to put the Celtics up 91-86. He’s scored 6 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter. In 2015, they trailed the Cleveland Cavaliers 2-1 before Game 4 in Cleveland.

Stephen Curry shakes off injury, wills Warriors to Game 4 win to knot ... (The Washington Post)

Golden State's star fought through a Game 3 foot injury to take control of Game 4, lifting the Warriors to a 107-97 win that evened the NBA Finals.

For Steph to take that kind of pressure all game long and still be able to defend on the other end [is big]. I think this is the strongest he’s ever been in his career, and it allows him to do what he’s been doing.” For the fourth time in the series, the Warriors outscored the Celtics in the third quarter, this time erasing a five-point halftime deficit to take a 79-78 lead into the fourth quarter. “The things he does we kind of take for granted from time to time. Curry’s fingerprints were all over that push, as he held his follow-through after drilling a three-pointer from the top of the key and sneaked into the left corner to hit another. In the tightest game of this series, Curry displayed what he often calls his “championship DNA.” As Boston missed open looks from three down the stretch, Curry knocked in a one-legged runner, made a three-pointer from the right angle with just under two minutes left and then ran a pick and roll with Draymond Green to set up a layup for Kevon Looney in the game’s final minute. Curry’s optimism about the extent of his injury — he insisted it wasn’t as bad as a left foot sprain he suffered in March — proved well-founded, as he showed no ill effects.

NBA X HBCU Fellowship Program making dreams come true (NBA.com)

The inaugural HBCU Fellowship program helps 60 interns learn the ins and outs of life in the front office of NBA and WNBA teams.

It’s very important for these young men and women to be put in rooms that they wouldn’t normally be put in, to be uncomfortable — that creates more opportunities to grow. I’m thankful for the partnership the NBA has with the HBCUs and how we can inspire, but also provide them with internship opportunities. “I’m proud to welcome the first HBCU Fellowship class, thousands of applicants, a truly competitive process, but you made it,” Stuart said. This feeling of excitement was shared by the NBA x HBCU Fellowship directors. Young, eager and ready for the challenges ahead, these students are now in the league — a dream many kids have when they first dribble a basketball at a young age. The students will go on to work in different positions within the league office or directly with an NBA or WNBA franchise.

The Warriors can enjoy this win for now, but it’s back to San Francisco to prepare for the biggest game of the series. Curry sinks two more free throws, finishing with 43 points on the night. He finds Draymond on the roll, and Green draws and dishes to Looney for the easy layup. The Warriors turn it over, but Boston bricks another open 3-pointer — this one from Al Horford following great defense by Thomson to close Brown’s driving lane and force him to pass. I know it's baked into the style, but it's just unsurvivable against a team this good at making it hard for you to score under ideal circumstances. 6. Brown converts back-to-back driving layups off Warriors turnovers to give the Celtics a four-point lead with 7:32 left. 8. Curry scores 14 of his 33 points in the third to give Golden State a 79-78 lead heading into the final quarter. Is this the beginning of another dominant third quarter from the Warriors? A Curry runner is followed by a Tatum 3-pointer (he’s 3-for-3 from deep so far), then Jordan Poole got this to go against the Time Lord’s defensive wall: 14. Boston is making a push late in the first half, ripping off a 10-0 run to turn a three-point deficit into a seven-point lead with just under three minutes remaining. Wiggins has a pair of 3-pointers and a nice step-back shot from the post; he’s looked great so far as a scoring complement to Curry. Here are 24 thoughts on Game 4 as it unfolded in Boston.

Stephen Curry's 43 Points Help Golden State Beat Celtics in NBA ... (The New York Times)

Golden State desperately needed a win after losing two of the first three games in the N.B.A. finals. Curry's 43 points on Friday got it done.

Curry participated in Golden State’s shootaround on Friday morning and was cleared to play. It was Celtics guard Jaylen Brown’s turn to shine in the second quarter. “The heart on that man is incredible,” Thompson said. Thompson picked up his fourth foul with 5:33 left in the game. We just controlled the game, the game that we wanted to play.” The playoffs this season have been characterized by blowouts, and the Celtics have played in several of them, including all three that came during the finals. As Golden State stretched its lead in the final minutes of Game 4, Celtics fans began to leave. I wanted to try to leverage that in a positive direction for us to start the game.” “Down 2-1, we had to come out with some desperation and more physicality than we showed in Game 3. When Klay Thompson appeared on the court an hour before the game, a group of fans in the lower bowl booed him. Curry, Michael Jordan and LeBron James are the only players 34 and older to score 40 or more points in an N.B.A. finals game. After one of his two first-quarter 3-pointers, Curry screamed into the crowd full of Boston Celtics fans who had showed up early to hound him and his teammates.

C's Admit to Stagnant Play, Vow To Return to Celtic Basketball (Celtics.com)

The Boston Celtics admitted Friday night what everyone who watched Game 4 already knew: they were far too stagnant throughout Game 4.

Those two players and the Celtics as a whole now set their sights on getting igniting the offense when Game 5 arrives Monday night. They are oftentimes unguardable when the ball is popping from player to player, and when players are consistently cutting off the ball. They did not do either of those things on a consistent basis Friday night, and every player or coach who took to the postgame podium admitted as much. Jayson Tatum felt the brunt of that loading up Friday night, as he shot a woeful 4-for-15 from inside the 3-point arc. Boston’s recipe for success at the offensive end is ball and player movement. The Celtics lacked energy and movement throughout the game at the offensive end, which resulted in only 22 assists compared to 15 turnovers.

Stephen Curry 'wills' Golden State Warriors to victory with 43 points ... (ESPN)

"He was going to come out with that type of fire," Green said. Green added: "You just try to do what you can to help free him up to get him to his spots or open up some space for him to create and get to his spots. "The things he does we kind of take for granted from time to time," Thompson said. ... I think if everybody is forceful on the offensive end, and that means with cuts, that means crisp with your passes, then you allow him to be in the position to do what he does." But Curry outscored the rest of the Warriors' starters 43-39. He became just the fifth guard in NBA history to have at least 40 points and 10 rebounds in a Finals game. Kevon Looney, who came off of the bench for the first time this series, had 11 rebounds and finished with a plus-21 net rating. But it was Curry who carried them to the point when that shot could become the dagger. With just over a minute left in the game and the Warriors up three, Green grabbed the offensive rebound off a missed Thompson 3-pointer. "Felt like we just had to let everybody know that we were here tonight," Curry said. On Friday, he scored 10 in the final frame. BOSTON -- Stephen Curry isn't one to show tons of emotion throughout the course of a game.

5 takeaways from the Warriors' series-tying Game 4 victory in 2022 ... (NBA.com)

Stephen Curry captures the moment, Steve Kerr makes a crucial choice in the 4th and more thoughts as the Warriors retake homecourt advantage.

“Well, you have a group of guys who are going to be in the Hall of Fame someday: Steph, Klay, Draymond,” he said. There were times in that series when Tatum was the best player on a floor he shared with a two-time MVP and NBA champ (Giannis Antetokounmpo). Then against the Heat he closed out strong, averaging 28 points and 10 rebounds in the last two games. Coach Steve Kerr had a perfectly reasonable answer for the Warriors’ road success in the Steph Curry era. When two superior teams meet, the city and the name of the arena rarely is ever matters. Contrast this to the First Round Tatum, Second Round Tatum and the East Finals Tatum. It wasn’t too long ago when he had a career-defining 43-point masterpiece against the Bucks and in a two-game stretch had 80 points and another game with 13 rebounds. A few switches to get favorable matchups and jumpers followed, and the job was done, with 10 rebounds a bonus on the tally. It was a chilling sign for the Celtics, who were mostly helpless against the carnage done by Curry and his first 40-piece of the 2022 postseason. Otherwise, it was a mild effort by Green and a forgettable two-game stay in Boston, capped by a fourth-quarter removal. Oh, and doing this against a tough defensive team such as the Celtics, that’s a bonus, should Curry and the Warriors pull this off. Both were possible because Kerr sat Green for Kevon Looney midway through a tight fourth quarter — and perhaps as a result, the Warriors’ chances increased. Curry was in for an epic night, a defining night for him in the Finals, where in the past he hasn’t always been at his peak. So: About that left foot he and the raised red flags?

Game 5 Preview: Warriors vs. Celtics - 6/13/22 (Warriors.com)

The NBA Finals return to Chase Center for a pivotal Game 5 matchup between the Warriors and Celtics.

Marcus Smart, Derrick White and Al Horford also have had their moments offensively for the Celtics in the Finals, who as a team are shooting 49 percent in their wins and 39 percent in their losses. He’s averaging 34.3 points while shooting over 49 percent (both overall and on 3-pointers), and he’s made no fewer than five threes in any game in these Finals. Should he keep up at this pace, this will be Curry’s highest scoring performance in his NBA Finals career, and the third highest scoring postseason series overall. He’s averaging 3.0 blocks per game and has the second best average plus-minus rating (+5.0) among players who play at least 15 minutes a game in this series, trailing only Looney. The Celtics have been the best road team during this postseason, and they’ll need that to ring true at least one more time to keep their Championship hopes alive. AST: Tatum (6.2) Wiggins has been dealt the tough task of defending Boston’s All-NBA star Jayson Tatum. And just as he did against Luka Doncic in the Western Conference Finals, Wiggins is making Tatum work for everything he gets in The Finals. Tatum is averaging 22.3 points while shooting 34.1 percent from the field, down from the 27.0 points on 44.6 percent shooting he had through the first three rounds of the postseason. In fact, the Warriors have outscored the Celtics by a single point (422-421) through the first four games. Curry made seven threes in the game and Andrew Wiggins had 17 points and a career-high 16 rebounds in the win, which tied the series up at 2-2. AST: Green (6.2) Stephen Curry had 43 points and the Warriors ended a tightly contested game with a 17-3 run to win Game 4, 107-97, in Boston on Friday night. The Warriors have won the third quarter in each of the first four games of the series and are a cumulative plus-49 in that period for the series, but Boston rode dominant fourth quarters to each of their wins in Games 1 and 3. AST: 27.2 (1st) The Dubs have gone 10-1 at home this postseason, and with three games at most left in the series, the Warriors can and will use any edge they can with each team two wins away from an NBA Championship. If Monday’s Game 5 plays out anything like the first four games, it will be decided in the second half, as the team who has won the second half has won each of the first four games in the series.

NBA Finals 2022 - Why the Warriors and Celtics need their big men ... (ESPN)

The Finals could be determined by the availability and effectiveness of Draymond Green, Kevon Looney and Robert Williams III.

Kerr still had to make the call in the moment, and it was one of the best moves he has made in the series. If the same situation arises in Games 5 or 6 or maybe even 7, Kerr might have to do it again. He's gotten a bunch of baskets around the rim, shooting 13-of-18 as he gets putbacks and dump-offs when attention goes elsewhere. It has been working: After missing seven of the Celtics' first 14 playoff games, he has played eight in a row. Kerr made it sound like it was the plan all along to reduce Green's minutes; the power forward played a series-low 33. He had a playoff career-high 12 rebounds Friday. When he has been on the floor, the Celtics are +20 in the four games. Recovering from knee surgery late in the season and a bone bruise in his left knee, Williams' life has been all about playing and treatment on the knee for weeks. When he was on the floor in Game 4, the Celtics outscored the Warriors by six points. Then Kerr decided to play Green only on defense as much as possible in the final minutes, once even calling a timeout to take him out of the game. Then there's the brewing scenario with Green, who has been so limited on offense in these Finals that Williams will often guard him because it allows freelancing elsewhere. It was as simple as Green not playing well and the player he went to, Kevon Looney, was. The Golden State Warriors' coach had another big one with seven minutes left Friday in a vital Game 4 of the NBA Finals when he decided to pull Draymond Green out of the game.

Mavs Host NBA Draft Workout; Curry 'Pride' Evens Finals: Tracker (Sports Illustrated)

As the offseason rolls on, keep up with all news as it relates to the Dallas Mavericks right here with our DallasBasketball.com NBA Tracker.

According to NBA reporter Marc Stein, the Mavs are planning to retain a couple of key bench presence and locker room guys. According to Forbes, James has become the first-ever active NBA player to become a billionaire. The same can be said for Theo Pinson, who scored a season-high 16 points in Dallas’ regular-season finale win against the San Antonio Spurs. Although Dallas already has Jalen Brunson and Spencer Dinwiddie on the roster, it never hurts to have another seasoned secondary distributor… The Oregon-based Knight, 84, has an estimated personal worth of $60 billion and would reportedly plan to keep the Blazers in Portland. With the NBA Draft just a little over two weeks away, the Dallas Mavericks have started the process of bringing in prospects for workouts. NBA Finals 2022 - Stephen Curry puts Golden State Warriors on his ... (ESPN)

The two-time MVP put the Warriors on his back to send the series back to San Francisco even at 2-2.

For Curry, Game 4 was a showcase of both prolific volume and dramatic timeliness. The Celtics, who led for most of the game, looked as if they'd get a long-awaited signature performance from Jayson Tatum, who entered the game averaging 22 points over the first three games on a woeful true shooting percentage of 48.4. Both Tatum and Jaylen Brown turned in solid efforts -- decisive, assertive attacks with smart playmaking. The Golden State Warriors built a dynasty playing a beautiful brand of basketball predicated on movement, passing and creativity. Against the NBA's top-ranked defense that has zeroed in on the game's most celebrated shooter, Curry found the smallest pockets of space in the Celtics' pick-and-roll coverage to launch looping shots from long distance and acrobatic runners off the dribble. Golden State has had to rely on Curry, with heavy usage of a more traditional pick-and-roll game to maximize his shot opportunities. The Warriors have traditionally featured plenty of offense during their dynastic run, but they have struggled to find consistent shot creation outside of Curry's exploits.

Game 4 infuriated Celtics fans, but that's the beauty of the series: For all the mistakes, they're still two wins from banner No. 18.

And either win the NBA title there or take care of business in Game 6 at the Garden, as the Celtics did to the Lakers in the 2008 NBA Finals. It’s infuriating if you’re a Celtics fan, which makes one imagine the thunder and lightning going inside Udoka’s head when things don’t go right. Marcus Smart was asked about Tatum’s rough night and if perhaps he and some of the fellas have talked with him. Not on purpose. Not on purpose. Instead, he submitted his usual array of lovely shots, including the customary precision treys, but also a one-handed feather duster from in close. “Everybody was just kind of standing around, looking at whoever had the ball. We trust in you, we believe in you.’ ” The flaws we’ve seen in this series are many, and on both sides, but they have somehow humanized a superhuman sport. But that’s not the point. The easiest way to answer the question is to pose this question: Are these great teams?

Inside The Box Score: 2022 NBA Finals, Game 4 (NBA.com)

Take a closer look at Golden State's 107-97 win over Boston in Game 4 to tie the Finals at 2-2 with a deep dive into all aspects of the box score.

• In each of the first three games of the Finals, Marcus Smart was matched up with Stephen Curry for the most minutes of any Celtic, followed by Derrick White each time. • Stephen Curry shot the ball better when he was contested (9-for-14, 64.3%) than when he was left uncontested (5-for-12, 41.7%) in Game 4. • Boston doubled up the Warriors on box outs in Game 4, 12-6. • The teams tied in loose balls recovered as every 50-50 ball is critical in the Finals. No play may have demonstrated that more than Jayson Tatum’s dive and slide across the sidelines to try to save a ball from going out of bounds. • No player was on the move more than Klay Thompson in Game 4 as he traveled just under three miles on the court with a game-high 2.97 miles. In Game 4, the Warriors had 14 screen assists for 38 points – the top two marks of the series. • The Warriors assisted on only half of their made field goals in Game 4, which is not only their lowest assist percentage of the Finals, but is also their lowest mark of the entire postseason. • Boston has finished with a higher free throw rate in three of the four games in this series. He not only made the same number of 2s and 3s, he was also assisted at the same rate on both shot types (42.9%). • The first three games of the series featured only 11 total seconds of clutch time – score within five points in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter or overtime – and that came in Game 1, when Al Horford made a 3-pointer with 4:49 to play in the game to put Boston up by six. Boston’s Jaylen Brown led all players with 12 points in the paint, while Stephen Curry led the Warriors with 10, followed by Andrew Wiggins at eight. • In Boston’s two wins in this series, it has shot 50.6% (Game 1) and 48.3% (Game 3) as a team, respectively.

Fate brings 4 fans together for Michael Jordan's 'Flu Game' (NBA.com)

A business trip between 3 Nike employees takes an unexpected turn, and ends up changing a young Utah Jazz fan's life.

“We gave him back to his mom, had that moment, tears were shed, and we all choked up as we realized this is what the night was for; it wasn’t for the game. “As his back was to us, we could see her face and the tears that began to stream down her cheeks.” Then I asked about her son, and it was great to hear that he’s done really well in life.” “We were excited about the Jazz and I would have loved to have gone if circumstances were different, but I wasn’t about to take that opportunity away from Chase,” Mary recalls. “I was just so excited to see those guys the next day,” Mary said. It wasn’t until a year ago that the idea of getting back in contact was first sparked by Ken finding his ticket stub while he was in the process of moving. “The game changed for us right there and it became all about Chase’s experience that night,” Ken said. “I just thought there’s so many times that you help a customer because it’s the right thing to do, and I kind of felt like that at the time,” Mary said. “I remember handing them up to him, and then thinking, ‘What did I just do?'” Mary said with a laugh. The reason she didn’t go to the game herself, but rather insisted that the ticket go to her son. But for a Finals Jazz game against Michael Jordan and the Bulls, it was like, ‘Yeah, I’m out of here guys.'” She has tickets to the Jazz game,” said Chase, who is now 38 and still lives in the Salt Lake City metro area.

NBA Finals: Curry's Instant Classic Evens Things Up, Shifts ... (bleachernation.com)

Stephen Curry shocked the Celtics with an instant classic on Friday night at The Garden, and the impact of that performance on the momentum of the series.

There’s been plenty of banter about the fact that Curry has three NBA Championships but no Finals MVP. Well, if the Warriors can pull this out in the end, that storyline will be dead. Boston had the Warriors right where they wanted them before tip-off on Friday night. Steph scored 10 of his 43 in the fourth quarter. Curry’s head coach Steve Kerr had a first-person look at the man with the most such performances, Michael Jordan. Still, Kerr was stunned by Steph’s Game 4 masterpiece. Steph Curry’s ankle was a question, the Celtics were two wins from an NBA title, and Boston had home court for Game 4. Fifty-three percent shooting from the floor.

Curry pours in 43 as Warriors edge Celtics to level NBA finals at two ... (The Guardian)

Stephen Curry scored 43 points to lead the Golden State Warriors to a 107-97 victory over the Boston Celtics in Game 4 of the NBA finals on Friday night.

Williams was listed as questionable coming into the game with the knee injury that kept him out at the end of the regular season and the start of the playoffs. Curry’s ankle was an issue coming into the night after Boston’s Al Horford landed on it late in Game 3. The amped-up crowd spent much of the game booing Green, chanting an obscenity at him that is usually reserved for Bucky Dent, and jeering his many misses. “The things he does, we kind of take for granted at times, to go out there and put us on his back. Marcus Smart, who scored 18 points, hit a three-pointer to give the Celtics a 94-90 lead with just over five minutes remaining. Andrew Wiggins had 17 points and 16 boards for the Warriors, who have won at least one road game for 27 consecutive playoff series.

Finals Film Study: Boston's clutch time offense remains its Achilles ... (NBA.com)

In Game 4, the Warriors went on a late 10-0 run (between 5:18 and 1:32 remaining in the game) while the Celtics missed all 6 of their shots.

And after a Looney layup (when the Celtics got the ball out of Curry’s hands), the Celtics had their sixth and final clutch possession of Game 4. The Celtics also had multiple possessions earlier in Game 4 where they just weren’t very purposeful and settled for bad shots. Turnovers and rebounds have been a part of that, but shooting is the most important aspect of this game. The following possession (clutch possession No. 4), it was Green doing the same thing. Brown kicked out to Smart and Green made a huge effort to contest the shot as best he could: But Thompson saw what was happening, switched off of Brown in the corner, and contested Tatum at the rim without fouling: Flare screens (for multiple players) have become a big part of the Celtics’ offense in this series. The Celtics (plus-7.4) were 1.9 points per 100 possessions better than the Golden State Warriors (plus-5.5) in the regular season, but the Western Conference champs have home-court advantage in this series because they won two more games. Brooklyn, of course, had one of the worst defenses in the playoffs. But by beating their opponents so decisively (20 of the 28 wins were by double-digits, 15 were by 20 points or more), the Celtics didn’t really resolve their clutch issues. And over those four games, Boston scored 25 points on 21 clutch possessions ( 119 per 100), with Jayson Tatum’s Game 1 buzzer-beater being the highlight. That was the third-biggest differential in that regard in the 26 years for which we have clutch data.

NBA Finals MVP Ladder: Stephen Curry vaults to No. 1 with electric ... (NBA.com)

Could it be anyone else? Golden State's sharpshooter goes off for 43 points and seven 3-pointers to continue his torrid Finals.

In Game 4, his 13 defensive rebounds helped the Warriors limit the Celtics to 12 second-chance points, compared to his own team’s 19. Thompson and Curry (18 points) nearly outscored the entire Celtics roster (19 points) in the fourth quarter as they combined to hit 5-for-8 from the field and 3-for-4 from deep. Thompson joined Curry and Green in winning 19 career NBA Finals contests to match San Antonio’s Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili for the most Finals victories by any trio over the last 50 seasons. But of course, we’ve still got to let this play out on the court as we step back into the thick of this dogfight of an NBA Finals on Monday at Chase Center. In the second half of the first four games, Tatum is minus-19 while averaging 8.3 points on 26.5% from the floor and 21.4% from 3-point range. Usually aggressive, Brown took his first shot of the night with 7:31 left in the opening quarter and finished with just two points before scoring 10 in the second quarter. In Game 3, Boston crushed the Warriors on the boards (47-31) with the forward producing just seven rebounds in a 116-100 loss. In doing so, he became the first Golden State Warrior since Nate Thurmond in 1967 to finish with at least 17 points and 16 rebounds in an NBA Finals contest. “Wiggs has done what he’s done all playoffs: make it tough for the opposing starter to score” Warriors forward Draymond Green said. “I just know last game they had outrebounded us and got all the offensive rebounds,” he said. That just carried over into a 14-point third quarter, then an uber-efficient final frame as Golden State embarked on a 17-3 run over the final five minutes. “To go against Boston, you’ve got to deal with Tatum and Brown, and they are just powerful, skilled players.
