Questions remained about the motive of a gunman who killed three people and injured two others in a shooting Thursday at a factory near Smithsburg.

The suspected shooter is a 23-year-old man who lives in West Virginia and was employed at the factory, Mullendore said. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office was investigating the motive of the suspect, who was in custody at Meritus Medical Center as of Friday morning. Deputies arrived around 2:30 p.m., and found four employees had been shot, three of them fatally.
