Governor says state trooper also shot in Smithsburg, town of nearly 3000 people in western Maryland.

Maryland’s governor, Larry Hogan, said he did not have all the facts immediately from a briefing with police, but said the suspect shot a state trooper in the shoulder, who then returned fire. The suspect was “no longer a threat to the community”. The sheriff’s office issued a brief statement saying the incident was rapidly evolving, and that it would release information as it was able.

The suspect fled and was caught after exchanging gunfire with a Maryland State Police trooper, the authorities said. Both were injured.
