Take 5: LIV Golf offers a mixed bag in debut (Sportsnaut)

Years of hassle, back-and-forth sniping and "will they/won't they" debate came to a head Thursday when the LIV Golf Invitational Series finally teed off at.

The PGA Tour announced suspensions for the 17 current and former members who played in London, less than an hour into the round. With Dustin Johnson headlining the London Invitational and Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed set to join the group at the second event, we know there will be no shortage of high-wattage stars. Jerry Foltz said nothing so far had “made anybody regret the decision they made to be a part of this.” OK then. When Talor Gooch landed his opening tee shot on a par 3 to about 12 feet, the analysts gushed over how close he came to a hole-in-one. The 51-year-old could have fared much worse given the long layoff and the massive number of eyes on his return. But he rebounded on the back nine with birdies at the par-4 12th and the par-5 13th and 15th holes.

Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson start well in Saudi-backed rebel ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

In amongst the politics and off-course drama, a golf tournament broke out at Centurion Club.

But as the intervention of Jamal Khashoggi’s fiancee illustrates, the controversy is about more than just rich players wanting to become even richer and a perceived lack of loyalty to their respective tours. It's not hard to see why the Europ...sorry, DP World Tour is annoyed at the rebel tour but in changing it's name the European Tour has been accused of helping a form of sportswashing of its own - DP World being a huge company from the UAE, another country accused of having a less than exemplary human-rights record. But until we see what actually unfolds in Hertfordshire and beyond it's also clear that, for now at least, the only thing it's supercharging is the bank accounts of those golfers who've seen an extra nought and jumped ship from the PGA and DP World Tours. The events of the past few months have been mired in controversy. Meanwhile, playing partner DJ has to settle for a bogey and he drops a shot to join his fellow American at one-over for the round. The shotgun start does make it very tough to live blog - everyone hitting at the same time. Playing partner Mickelson then hits his into the deep rough on the other side of the fairway - there's at least 100 yards between those two balls. The Zimbabwean is playing with Mickelson and Dustin Johnson and he's more than holding his own. The commentators are trying hard to make what has been a fairly slow, nondescript round into some memorable, great, seminal, bundle of excitement and it's sort of grating. I have just Googled the South African so you don't have to - thank me later... The total prize pot for each of LIV Golf’s eight invitationals this year is $25 million, of which $5 million will go to teams and $20 million to the individual players. The shotgun start meant all 48 players started and finished at the same time.

PGA Tour suspends players in Saudi-backed event as golf's discord ... (The Washington Post)

As LIV Golf launches its inaugural tournament, the PGA Tour announced that stars such as Dustin Johnson no longer will be allowed in its events.

The fans are going to love it, all the players who are here are going to love it.” Meanwhile, the new league — whose LIV name refers to the Roman numeral of its 54-hole events and rhymes with “give” — struck a cheery tone during its first round. “ … This certainly is not the last word on this topic.” It has raised purses, enhanced end-of-season bonus money and introduce the Player Impact Program, which funnels money to stars based on a combination of performance and off-course promotion. The tour, though, cannot compete financially with the deep pockets of LIV Golf or its guaranteed money for appearances, which violates the PGA Tour’s entrenched pay-for-performance ethos. “You probably have more questions,” Monahan wrote in his Thursday memo to players. They’ll therefore expect the players to behave much as they would do in any other tournament.,” said University of Sussex politics professor Dan Hough, who specializes in integrity and corruption in sports. “But they can’t demand the same PGA TOUR membership benefits, considerations, opportunities and platform as you. LIV Golf can offer guaranteed money on par with athletes in other sports, even if many believe the money is tainted by alleged atrocities of a repressive Saudi government. The rebel tour has no designs on turning a short-term profit, aiming instead to gain an instant foothold in the sport. If the general public are confused about who is playing where and what tournament’s on this week and who is, you know, ‘Oh, he plays there, okay, and he doesn’t get into these events.’ It just becomes so confusing. They want to be seen as supporters of a game that a lot of people like to watch and play.

LIV Golf's first broadcast delivered on shots but fell short on innovation (Golf.com)

But the bigger problem, the one that will be hardest to fix, is also the simplest: After six months of promising innovation, LIV Golf’s first broadcast was decidedly normal. In many ways, Thursday served as a tryout for LIV Golf’s broadcast team, which is headed by Steve Beim, former U.S. Open and “The Match” producer. Instead, the first LIV Golf Invitational series round was blasted out to the world on YouTube, Facebook and the LIV Golf website … for free. On Thursday, LIV went live for the first time, presenting its vision for golf’s future in a neon-tinted shade of lime green. He had just accepted a new role as a broadcast consultant for his good friend Greg Norman at LIV Golf, and it was his job to bring golf broadcasting into the 21st century. “The LIV Golf broadcast will be unlike anything fans have seen before,” Will Staeger, LIV’s chief media officer, said in a release announcing the new product.

The leaderboard — a black and highlighter-green rail on the left side of the screen — did a good job bouncing back and forth between team and individual scores, showing how many holes remaining there were and what number shot a player was on at a particular hole. And unlike on the LIV tour, there is no guaranteed money on the PGA Tour. As for the telecast, the production was relatively slick, particularly given the short amount of time and it being streamed only online. Even as Kevin Na and Talor Gooch earlier this week comically tried to explain that one of the biggest appeals of joining the circuit was the shotgun start because it eliminates being on the wrong side of a PGA Tour draw, there were ample reminders throughout the broadcast of the first round what’s at stake financially. Splashy black and highlighter-green graphics showed just what everyone is playing for: a $20 million purse for individual players, with $4 million to the winner and $120,000 for last place. There’s the team concept and the wacky team names and graphics.

LIV Golf Day 1 Live Updates: Follow Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson ... (Sports Illustrated)

The LIV Golf International Series has arrived, and we're following Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and all of the action on the opening day.

Everyone will tee off at the same time in a shotgun start: Usually it entails an army of golf carts all launched at once from the clubhouse. Phil Mickelson is grouped with DJ, and he also hit the fairway with his opening shot on No. 1. The shotgun start is moments away. The presentation includes a constantly updating leaderboard on the left side of the screen, with players and their team logos. Dustin Johnson's opening shot was shown live on the broadcast, and he split the fairway. The Public Investment Fund, an autonomous wealth fund administered by the government of Saudi Arabia, is the main shareholder of LIV Golf Investments. The golf course is tough and conditions are really tough," Johnson said afterward on the broadcast. If you’re just tuning in, you'll notice that most of the players won’t look any different sartorially than in other tournaments. So, in theory, one player could have a poor event but three good teammates and get a nice payday. Schwartzel is a former Masters champion and one of 17 current or former PGA Tour members competing in this event. We'll have live updates throughout the first day, so check back for more highlights, news and analysis from LIV Golf's first day.
