Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Black Adam is currently scheduled to open on October 21, and in this first teaser trailer, you’ll meet the man in black himself as well as a slew of other heroes. He’s a threat and they’re not used to having someone like that, who’s a live wire, that powerful, and so a team needs to go investigate.” “One, that the movie’s fun.

Naturally, that often involves electrocuting people to death with a scary version of Shazam’s powers, which, to the uninitiated, seems like something a bad guy would do. “Then I was reborn a god. “I was slave until I died,” Johnson says in trailer.

'Black Adam' trailer confirms a surprising DCEU strategy to compete ... (Inverse)

In the DC Comics canon, Black Adam is the nemesis of Shazam who got his powers from the same wizard. But you wouldn't know it from the trailer.

The Inverse Analysis — The trailer for Black Adam hiding the character’s connections to Shazam! is no mistake. And maybe they will — if Black Adam brings the thunder. With DC clearly unable to find the cohesiveness of the rival Marvel Cinematic Universe, the studio has more or less approached things from a “movie first” perspective, enabling its directors and writers to simply create. What Happened? — The trailer for Black Adam was released Wednesday, after several days of hype from Johnson on social media. (The “Stamina of Shu” and “Power of Aten” for example.) But the trailer is strangely hiding that fact.

Dwayne Johnson Says Black Adam 'Represents The World' (/FILM)

The upcoming DC movie Black Adam features a diverse cast of talented actors.

And this is our kind of movie, and 'Black Adam' represents the world, the world of color, the world of acceptance, the world of embracing, and also the world having a real metal and a core of what you believe in ... we have a lot of color on this movie. As Diab mentions, there are iterations of the story that tie the character directly to Egypt but others use the fictional country from the comics, which serves as the primary setting for Black Adams story. And I think we were able to put together a team of killer actors that knock it out of the park and embody those heroes, and also embody the world." With the film in the works for so many years (nearly 15), Johnson and his collaborators had plenty of time to decide which elements were most important. I think that's what we were most proud about — we were able to assemble phenomenal actors that all came in and won the roles, and knocked us off our seats, but they also represent the world. Have you been keeping up with the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe? Because rumor has it that it's about to change in a very big way.

That relationship I think is going to be really celebrated." "The violence is real and it can be rough and gruesome in places, but I think the audience will be okay. Furthermore, Black Adam is on a collision course with Shazam!, a DC character who was made to be family-friendly in his debut film. That relationship between Cyclone and Atom Smasher, I think is very unique. I mean, we really like to service all demos, all ages, but we had to be authentic to Black Adam and we had to really push," Flynn said. While speaking to ComicBook.com, Black Adam producer Beau Flynn opened up about how far the DC Comics film will push the intensity and violence.

Black Adam Trailer Breakdown: The Rock Has Super Powers, But ... (/FILM)

Black Adam, a real movie that's really coming to theaters, has an action-packed trailer for us to break down.

One of the big takeaways here, if we piece it all together, is that a great deal of this trailer seems to take place around one big action sequence. Believe it or not, Adam is not at all concerned with the firepower these jets have to offer, and he dispatches of them in a hurry. Now we get to meet Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, who is about as big as a five-story building in this shot as he's running down the street. Last, but certainly not least, we get a glimpse of Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, giving us the full picture of the Justice Society. This is all happening at the same city in which they were flying over earlier in the trailer. Again, that remains unclear but the main thing is that director Jaume Collet-Serra is doing a lot of work to let us know that this is a man who has suffered and has suffered greatly. It is pretty amazing we live in a world where Hawkman is about to be a major live-action character in a mega-budget superhero movie. Here, we meet a key player in the movie in the form of Piece Brosnan as Dr. Fate. He is a mystical being not altogether unlike Doctor Strange (broad strokes anyway), and he is going to be a member of the Justice Society, who we are going to meet the rest of shortly. We can see who appears to be Hodge here doing a pretty baller move and jumping out of the aircraft getting ready to suit up as Hawkman to do some superhero stuff. Their goal is to get him into a tank that looks not totally unlike a Bacta tank from "Star Wars." But, and not to beat the "Star Wars" references to death here, it's very clearly more in line with carbon freezing as this is a cryo-chamber designed to keep him under. He is extremely powerful and was seemingly awakened by a group of unsuspecting soldiers of a sort, who look quite a bit like the ones we saw earlier. There aren't a lot of clues as to where this is, exactly, but it certainly seems like our title character is on that ship at the very least. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was first attached to the role way back in 2007, pre-dating even the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At that time, the idea was to have him be the villain in "Shazam!" But as Johnson's star power grew, the idea to give the antihero a solo movie became more appealing.

Black Adam Is Aware Of Other DC Heroes In Solo Movie (Screen Rant)

Exclusive: Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia confirms that Dwayne Johnson's DCEU character is aware of other DC heroes in his solo movie.

Given that Black Adam will be at odds with members of the JSA, it shouldn't come as a shock that he'll more than likely clash with other superheroes in the DCEU. Ever since Johnson got tapped as the DC anti-hero, he has stressed the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is going to change with the arrival of his character. While Black Adam will be set within the DCEU, it remains to be seen how much Johnson's titular character knows about other heroes in the franchise. Making his live-action debut, Black Adam follows the story of Teth-Adam during his time as a slave of Khandaq before being granted the godlike powers he has in the comics.

In the Black Adam trailer, audiences get to see some of that power in action as Black Adam takes to the skies at high speeds, smashes the wing of a plane, and even withstands a missile. So that gives you an idea of his power.” There are many similarities between him and the Man of Steel, and fans are already dreaming about a live-action showdown, but an advantage Black Adam has is that he’s magically empowered by Egyptian gods. But he’s the kind of guy that one of his great advantages is that he does not pull back. “The big screen version of him is he’s very true to the comic books.

Everything We Know About Black Adam (Rotten Tomatoes)

We break down the cast and crew, the characters, the comic book backstory, and more, including details from the first trailer.

In the modern part of the film, Black Adam will face Justice Society members Hawkman ( Aldis Hodge), Dr. Fate ( Pierce Brosnan), Atom Smasher ( Noah Centineo), and Cyclone ( Quintessa Swindell). The latter two are more recent members of the team who can claim original JSAers The Atom and The Red Tornado as relatives. Also, it is worth noting the Wizard’s ( Djimon Honsou) own mention of Teth-Adam’s failure in Shazam! when he first encounters Billy ( Asher Angel). We imagine Black Adam will expand on those fleeting moments. After ten or so years of talking about it in one form or another, Black Adam will finally come to theaters on October 21. Sarah Shahi also appears in the film as Adriana Tomaz. Although the studio describes her as an archeologist, comic book fans will recognize her as the reincarnation of Teth-Adam’s long lost wife and, eventually, the superhero known as Isis. The comic book character has some rather twisty origins, though, which means older TV viewers will remember her as a different Isis ( Joanna Cameron) from The Secrets of Isis Saturday morning television show – in which she occasionally encountered Shazam – while avid Legends of Tomorrow watchers will recall her connection to Zari Tarazi ( Tala Ashe). We doubt those connections will come up in the film, but with a Multiverse just off-screen, anything is possible. Although, as the team is also comprised of legacy character in subsequent iterations, we imagine this version of the team will reveal almost a century’s worth of legacy, if even just in passing. The Batman, for instance, does not occur in the same reality as Justice League or Shazam! Nevertheless, we’re willing to believe Black Adam was made with the intention of continuing the reality first outlined in Man of Steel – indeed, Johnson’s own comments across both DC FanDome events suggest a showdown with Superman is something he wants to do. Also, we imagine there will be a good reason why they are dealing with Black Adam instead of the Justice League. That is the internal struggle Teth-Adam faces, of course, and it appears he will do just that even as he tussles with insurgents, well-armed militaries, and superheroes. At the same time, as Dr. Fate ( Pierce Brosnan) tells him in the trailer, he will be presented with a choice to save the world or destroy it. Black Adam appeared in a single 1945 issue of the original Fawcett Comics’ The Marvel Family as the Wizard Shazam’s former and failed apprentice. Writers like Roy Thomas and Jerry Ordway would take his single appearance and build on it to include a deeper history in the region, a long-lost family, and a position as Captain Marvel’s Shazam’s archfoe. For the moment, we’re assuming it takes place on the same Earth as previous DC films like Shazam!, The Suicide Squad, and Justice League (either version). Of course, with DC-inspired movies, film-to-film continuity is always up for debate.

'Black Adam' Trailer Breakdown: All Kneel Before Teth-Adam (Collider.com)

We break down the Black Adam trailer frame by frame and discuss what it could all mean for the highly-anticipated DC film.

Chances are this moment happens at the beginning of the movie, when Teth-Adam wakes from his long slumber and tries to figure out what is happening in the world. In this scene, Teth-Adam is still wearing a cape so damaged by the passage of time that it looks like it belongs to a museum. This version of Doctor Fate sounds like the hero has already seen too much in his lifetime, and Brosnan is the perfect choice to play a veteran hero trying to keep his team together while new meta-humans show up. That kind of loss can devastate any person, and Teth-Adam will apparently use his pain to fuel his rage against the people he sees as evildoers. So, when he finally breaks free, it’s easy to understand the interest of the JSA. It looks like, at first, the JSA will help the anti-hero recover and get back on his feet, and they even invite Black Adam to be a part of the team. The trailer is everything we could expect, with Johnson mowing down his enemies while wearing the black and yellow suit that’s so iconic in the comic books.

How Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam Movie Is Changing The DC ... (Cinema Blend)

In the New 52 continuity, Billy Batson, a.k.a. Shazam, met Black Adam shortly after he was chosen by The Wizard to be his new champion at the Rock of Eternity.

Did the Wizard originally pick Adam’s son to be his champion, and then once he died, he was cool with Adam inheriting the mantle? When Asher Angel’s Billy Batson was brought to the Rock of Eternity, he learned how Black Adam had been the champion of Djimon Hounsou’s Wizard millennia ago; Adam wasn’t outright named in the movie, but it was obviously him. Or did the Wizard try to take back that power from Adam, and that led to the Seven Deadly Sins wreaking havoc? What if, just like what happened between Adam and Aman in the comics, Johnson’s Adam actually murdered his son after not approving of the way he was using his power? However, in the DCEU, it will be Adam’s son instead of his nephew, and the circumstances behind the transfer of power have changed. We’ve known for years that Dwayne Johnson’s Teth-Adam will also be a slave from ancient Kahndaq, and just like in the New 52, a family member of his will be granted incredible power before him.

Is Black Adam Stronger Than Superman (Screen Rant)

Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam is shown to be as powerful as Superman in the new trailer, but is he actually stronger than the Man of Steel?

Black Adam and Superman have fought a handful of times over the years in the pages of the comics, but neither has truly emerged a clear victor in any of those bouts, as there was always an additional factor that precluded such an outcome. DC won the case in appeals, eventually acquiring both Shazam and Black Adam for itself. Black Adam's powers are essentially derived from the ancient wizard Shazam, gifting him with the powers of the gods, including Shu (stamina), Hershef (strength), Amon (power), Zehuti (wisdom), Anpu (speed), and Menthu (courage), making him a force to be reckoned with for any superhero.

With the likable Dwayne Johnson playing him, think of this superpowered comics character as an antihero rather than a villain.

In the trailer, Black Adam says he was a slave until he died -- and then he's shown being horribly murdered: slashed and thrown off a cliff. He plays Kent Nelson/Doctor Fate, a member of the Justice Society of America and the son of an archeologist. He's also told in the trailer that he can be "the destroyer of this world, or you can be its savior." In the original comics, Black Adam was a corrupted ancient Egyptian with a complicated backstory. And he seems to lean that way in the film. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson stars as Black Adam in a new DC Comics feature film coming out from Warner Bros. on Oct. 21, but even loyal comics readers may have no idea who this character is.
