Texas Sweeps Double-Header vs. Oklahoma State, Advances to ... (Sports Illustrated)

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Gritty, unseeded Texas fought off elimination twice in one day to earn a shot at a national championship.

Day’s three-run homer in the second inning of the first game was more than enough for Czech (13–1). Her performance allowed the Longhorns to save Dolcini, the team’s ace. “We played pretty clean defense all season and just had a couple of mishaps there at the end. “You start thinking about the end of the season and what you’re going to say and what you’re going to do. “We can look back at that one play because it had so much implication, but it didn’t cost us the game,” Oklahoma State coach Kenny Gajewski said. Then you hang in there, and you keep the spirits of the team up and see how they respond.” Texas needed to win two games in the double-elimination format to move forward, while Oklahoma State only needed one victory.

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – On Monday night in Women's College World Series semifinal action at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium, Texas(47-20-1) swept two games ...

With Oklahoma State suddenly trailing for the first time in the contest, Alexander was struck by a Dolcini pitch to begin the Cowgirl fifth. Starting the top of the fifth, Whitaker drew a leadoff walk to turn the lineup over for the Longhorns. After a Texas K, Scott made it two aboard with one out by chopping a single up the middle. Dayton granted the Longhorns some much-needed life against OSU ace Kelly Maxwell by starting the top of the fourth with a sharp single off the pitcher before moving to second on a throwing error. After Texas went down in order in the top of the first, OSU's Alexander led off the Cowgirl half with a single to shallow right center. Washington fielded it and eventually tossed home, but Iakopo's tag at the plate was just late as Oklahoma State nabbed a 1-0 lead. Scott fielded it cleanly, stepped on third and fired a strike across the infield to finish a game-ending double play. Again, Czech worked out of the jam as the sophomore lefty induced a bouncer to third to maintain Texas' three-run advantage. The lead eventually expanded to 5-0 as Iakopo plated Dayton on a long sacrifice fly to right. Sophomore first baseman JJ Smith continued her hot WCWS hitting by blooping a single to center as Texas boasted runners at the corners. Oklahoma State threatened in the top of the first as left fielder Chelsea Alexander started off the game with a single up the middle. Following a sac bunt and a K, designated player Miranda Elish walked to put two Cowgirls aboard. It will mark the first time two Big 12 teams meet in the championship series.

HOUSTON - Ashley Boyd beamed with pride last Thursday as she sat in the stands of USA Hall of Fame Stadium.

She definitely launched herself onto the national stage last weekend by throwing a shutout against No. 4 Arkansas to help her team reach this point. She was such a good teammate and leader while she was here, I know we have some players making the trip to watch her. Simpson has struck out 103, walked 48 and posted a 3.64 ERA with a 1.52 WHIP in 84 2/3 innings. "It’s amazing that she went from the State Championship game last year to now the National Championship series this year," Barbers Hill coach Aaron Fuller said. "She is our second player since I have been here to play in it, and it will never get old watching them live out the softball dream on the highest level." I know our program is happy for her.
