Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Endorses Alessandra Biaggi Against Top ... (HuffPost)

The New York progressive star is picking a fight with Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Maloney, who is white and openly gay, drew criticism in May when he announced that he would be running in New York’s 17th, a suburban seat currently held by Rep. Mondaire Jones, one of Congress’ first two openly gay Black men. But progressives like Biaggi, who had been running in a different seat before new district lines were unveiled in May, were dissatisfied. Biaggi now faces an awkward district hop of her own. It highlights the degree to which court-ordered redistricting has upended internal Democratic Party dynamics ahead of what is expected to be a bruising midterm election cycle for the party. As head of House Democrats’ campaign arm and a business-friendly lawmaker, Maloney is a top fundraiser. “We have an incredible opportunity to continue building progressive power by electing Alessandra.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) announced her endorsement of a left-wing rival to the powerful head of House Democrats' campaign arm on Tuesday.

Ocasio-Cortez previously called on Maloney to resign as head of the DCCC if he were to take on Jones in a primary. In a statement following the public announcement of the endorsement, Biaggi lauded Ocasio-Cortez as the “standard-bearer” of the Democratic Party. She also slammed Maloney’s decision to run in the 17th District, noting that as DCCC chairman, “his job is to maximize the number of seats that we have in the Democratic majority.” Maloney said he doesn't see any conflict between running the DCCC and making sure he is in a position to hold on to his seat in the House. “I am honored to have received overwhelming support locally, including endorsements from nearly 40 elected leaders and Democratic Party committees,” Maloney told the Washington Examiner. “I respect Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and have worked with her on a number of policy matters, including as a co-sponsor of the Green New Deal. But, on her endorsement, we are going to have to agree to disagree.” Now, support for Maloney's opponent, state Sen. Alessandra Biaggi, has even more support. In a statement to the Washington Examiner, Maloney played down Ocasio-Cortez’s decision to intervene in the race, maintaining that “this election comes down to voters in NY-17.”

The new maps pit incumbents against one another in several races. “Representative Ocasio-Cortez and I know our party will be strongest when Democrats stop letting corporate donors set the political agenda and start fighting for working people — and that’s why I am thrilled she is backing our campaign.” The poll also indicated Maloney maintained a 23-point lead after respondents heard balanced, positive messages about both candidates. “This election comes down to voters in NY-17, and I am honored to have received overwhelming support locally, including endorsements from nearly 40 elected leaders and Democratic Party committees.” “Now, she’s ready to take her leadership to Congress where I know she’ll continue fighting for working people.”

Maloney's decision to run in the new district — a more friendly one for Democrats compared to what was left of his old district — prompted some criticism from progressives. Ocasio-Cortez has endorsed some challengers to Democratic incumbents in the past and she's no stranger to taking on her party's leadership. Maloney avoided that fate when his home was drawn into the district that included much of progressive Democratic Rep. Mondaire Jones' current seat. Maloney's campaign also provided NBC with a memo from the campaign's pollster showing Maloney leading Biaggi 45 percent to 15 among likely Democratic primary voters with 39 percent undecided. An outside expert had to draw a new congressional map after a state judge overruled the legislature's proposed plan. New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is endorsing the primary challenger running to defeat the head of the House Democratic campaign arm, a rare move from a sitting member of Congress.
