Lakers Rumors: David Fizdale, Mike Penberthy & John Lucas III Not ... (LakersNation.com)

Los Angeles Lakers head coach Darvin Ham is not expected to retain David Fizdale, Mike Penberthy and John Lucas III on his staff.

We did player development, we did scouting, I had to step in as the head coach on a few occasions, but it was a team. Noticeably absent from the list is Phil Handy though, so perhaps he has been identified as a coach that Ham would like to keep around. Before they begin putting the roster together though, the Lakers must surround Ham with an adequate coaching staff.

Reporting thus far suggests that Terry Stotts, a finalist for the job that ultimately went to Ham, is not interested in taking an assistant coaching position. Penberthy had initially been the Lakers' shooting coach, but was promoted to the front of the bench last season. The Los Angeles Lakers, in the past, have struggled to grant their head coaches autonomy in building their staffs.

Ham has a major challenge ahead of him as he attempts to get the Lakers back to the postseason. We have to commit to the defensive side of the ball, or we don’t have a chance to do anything. And again, the rhythm of the team, and trying to establish a rhythm with LeBron, Russ and AD. And again, share the load defensively and offensively.

Rasheed Wallace Set to Join Los Angeles Lakers Coaching Staff (The Source)

Joining new Lakers coach Darvin Ham on the sidelines will be former NBA All-Star and Detroit Pistons legend Rasheed Wallace.

If Darvin had gotten a job last year, Rasheed had already promised him that he was going to go with him. “I think Rasheed might be going to LA with Darvin Ham. That was the deal from the beginning. Wallace last played in the NBA in 2013, and last season spent time with Penny Hardaway as an assistant coach at the University of Memphis. Memphis coach Penny Hardaway teased it days in advance to the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

New L.A. Lakers coach Darvin Ham: God is 'the master of all plans' (sportsspectrum.com)

“We got to engage one another and see the human side of one another,” he said. To him, returning to the city of his first NBA coaching stop feels like a “homecoming,” he said. It’s become a little overwhelming at times, just to see all the love. “First of all, I want to thank God,” Ham said. “You go through something like that, it’s going to do one of two things: it’s going to make you fearful or fearless. A native of Saginaw, Michigan, and a former NBA player from 1996-2005, Ham turned to coaching after his playing days.

Lakers introduce Darvin Ham: Three takeaways from head coach's ... (CBSSports.com)

The Los Angeles Lakers are entering a new era under recently hired head coach Darvin Ham. On Monday, they officially introduced Ham with a press conference ...

It sounds like a great plan, we'll just have to see if Ham and the Lakers are able to execute it well next season. "A lot of it now may happen without the ball in his hands, most of it now may happen on the defensive end. But if not, then Davis should be the team's primary center, and Ham alluded that the system he plans to deploy will necessitate Davis at the center. Not because he can't play power forward, because he absolutely can and has been an All-Star at that position, but because the Lakers don't have a quality center to stick alongside Davis for that to make sense. It's going to be the foundation of the type of standard we set within the 'Darvin Ham era.' "I think the type of spacing, a four-out, one-in style, which I'm gonna implement, is gonna help all parties." It was a down year across the board for the Lakers, and Davis' season certainly was a part of that. "Don't get it messed up, Russell is one of the best players our league has ever seen, and there's still a ton left in that tank," Ham said. "We have to commit to the defensive side of the ball or we don't have a chance to do anything. It has led to rumors about his status with the team heading into next season, but for right now he's still with the Lakers. Ham vouched for Westbrook -- who was in attendance at the press conference -- and his illustrious career in the league, while mentioning some small details about conversations they've had since he was hired. A year after finishing with the top-ranked defense in the league, L.A. stumbled to 21st in the 2021-22 season, struggling to stop anyone from scoring on them. It has to be consistent across the board."

New coach Darvin Ham to retain some Lakers assistants, including ... (Los Angeles Times)

Lakers coach Darvin Ham will keep assistants Phil Handy, Quinton Crawford and Jon Pastorek, but David Fizdale is among those who won't be retained.

Handy was hired at the time as a player development coach. It’s easy to like and root for new Lakers coach Darvin Ham to succeed, but with the current roster, will the players heed the emotion he brings? Pastorek is a player development coach with the Lakers.
