Bruins GM to Speak After Firing Head Coach Bruce Cassidy (NBC10 Boston)

Bruins gm Don Sweeney is expected to give more details behind the decision to fire Head Coach Bruce Cassidy during a Tuesday morning press conference.

Cassidy, 57, took over in Boston from Julien, who led the team to the 2011 Stanley Cup championship and back to the final two years later. During the pandemic-interrupted 2019-20 season the Bruins amassed 100 points in 70 games and claimed the Presidents Trophy for the league’s best record. Bergeron, who won his record fifth Selke Trophy as the league’s top defensive forward, is unsigned and has not committed to playing another season; he is also recovering from surgery. But the team hasn’t gotten out of the second round since then, including a Game 7 loss to Carolina this spring. His head coaching record for the Bruins is impressive, and we are appreciative of Bruce both professionally and personally." I want to thank and acknowledge Bruce for all his work and success with the Bruins organization. He coached them within one victory of the Stanley Cup in 2019 against the St. Louis Blues. “I think Bruce is a fantastic coach,” Neely said at his end-of-season media availability. “He’s brought a lot of success to this organization. The fans here love when we go all the way. “He got close to getting a Stanley Cup, you know? Sweeney is expected to give more detail at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

What coach wants to lead a team with uncertain veterans, injured regulars, and few sure-to-be NHL players in the pipeline? Whether the Bruins hire a young coach or a veteran, that first month is so valuable for establishing belief and credibility among players. For starters, the way the Bruins treated Cassidy at the end isn’t likely to sit well with many coaches. In many ways, a new coach is auditioning for whether the Bruins’ best goal-scorer wants to play for him long-term. It’s a job in a hockey-loving Original Six city, but after that, the appeal starts to diminish. If Cam Neely and Don Sweeney don’t think that’s enough, the next guy has a tall order that won’t be easy to deliver on.

Taking a look at the Bruins' options to replace Bruce Cassidy (98.5 The Sports Hub)

The Boston Bruins made their first big change of a surely busy offseason Monday with the decision to fire Bruce Cassidy after over five years on the job.

Ty Anderson is a writer and columnist for 985TheSportsHub.com. He has been covering the Bruins since 2010, and has been a member of the Boston chapter of the PHWA since 2013. Warsofsky’s success extends beyond this season, as the Wolves went a spectacular 21-9-3 in his second year as Chicago’s head coach, and the then-Checkers won the 2019 Calder Cup with Warsofsky as an assistant on the staff. Tortorella is that no nonsense, straight-shooting coach that expects his players to do everything (and then some) in the name of winning. In St. Louis, Savard was responsible for a Blues power play that finished the season with the NHL’s third-best man advantage. I really think they just thought that they had a bit more time with Leach being one of the better kept secrets in the coaching landscape. Bowness, who has been coaching in the NHL since 1984, went 89-62-25 during his three-year run with Dallas, and helped guide the team to the 2020 Stanley Cup Final inside the bubble. A Rhode Island native, the 55-year-old Quinn most recently served as New York’s bench boss from 2018 through 2021, and went 96-87-25 with the Blueshirts. I also want to extend my gratitude to Bruce and his family for everything they’ve done over the years to support the New England community and Bruins organization. In Toronto, Carbery helped run a power play that finished the year as the league’s most potent unit, at 27.3 percent. His head coaching record for the Bruins is impressive, and we are appreciative of Bruce both professionally and personally. “After taking some time to fully digest everything, I felt that the direction of our team for both this season and beyond would benefit from a new voice. I want to thank and acknowledge Bruce for all his work and success with the Bruins organization.

Boston Bruins fired the wrong guy in Bruce Cassidy (Chowder and Champions)

The Boston Bruins made Bruce Cassidy their scapegoat for their recent failure to win a Stanley Cup, but they fired the wrong guy.

Cassidy wasn’t the greatest coach admittedly, but he got dealt some pretty poor hands from Sweeney here, and the fact that he got canned while Sweeney didn’t (or hasn’t yet at least) isn’t really a great sign. The real culprit for these struggles has been Don Sweeney. Rather than firing Cassidy, it should have been Sweeney who got canned. The Bruins have been fighting to stay competitive for pretty much his entire tenure, and in 2019 it looked like it was going to pay off. The real issue is that Cassidy never really got proper replacements for that outgoing talent. But aside from that, they have been outclassed by their competition (usually the Tampa Bay Lightning), leading to their veteran core pretty much disbanding. The Boston Bruins offseason has gotten off to quite a horrible start.

Early indications are that the Bruins are going to go younger and fresher. And "to hire Barry Trotz" could be an emphatic retort to "Why fire Bruce Cassidy?" What it all inevitably leads to are questions about the direction of the franchise. Cassidy joins names like Barry Trotz, Pete DeBoer, Paul Maurice, John Tortorella and Rick Tocchet on the open market; a slew of assistant and associate coaches; and currently ostracized options like Mike Babcock and Joel Quenneville. That doesn't really answer the primary question, which is "Why fire Bruce Cassidy?" There are a number of theories bouncing around the Boston hockey sphere. Factor in Patrice Bergeron's uncertain status for next season, and the Bruins could have epically stumbled out of the gate in Cassidy's lame-duck season. His act may have worn thin in Boston, but it would be a breath of fresh air in other markets. Sweeney has made a series of specious player personnel decisions to keep the Bruins relevant. Cassidy managed to get the Bruins into the playoffs in all six seasons he coached them, starting in 2016-17 when he took over from Claude Julien with 27 games remaining. Cassidy enters the most competitive coaching market in recent memory. Perhaps the Bruins just didn't want to delay the inevitable. The Bruins have seen their core erode over the past few seasons, with franchise icons such as Zdeno Chara, Tuukka Rask and David Krejci moving on.

Potential replacements for Bruce Cassidy as Bruins' head coach (CBS News)

The Bruins need a new head coach. Here are a few candidates that Don Sweeney may consider this offseason.

He won a Stanley Cup with the Capitals in 2018, and was 152-102-34 over his four years with the Islanders. He has a national title on his resume as well, beating Quinn's Terriers in 2015. The next guy needs to come in and effectively bridge all age groups," said Sweeney "I don't think it's a prerequisite to have coached on an NHL bench." He served as an assistant under Parker starting in 2009, when BU won a title, and Quinn coached both Charlie McAvoy and Matt Grzelcyk when they were Terriers. Sweeney has a list of potential candidates in mind, but he doesn't expect a resolution anytime soon. A year later, he was brought into Boston as a player development coordinator and then hired as an assistant coach when Jay Pandolfo left in the 2021 summer. He joined the Senators in 2018 after retiring from hockey and was hired as a player development coach. During his time in the Big Apple, he compiled a record of 96-87-25 with a youthful Rangers team that just did not seem to click under him. The former Bruins forward likely does not have enough coaching experience to be considered to take over the job, but Sweeney did mention NHL coaching experience is not a must. But he's a bright up-and-coming coach in the NHL. He finished his time at BU with a record of 105–69–21. He also has two years as head bench boss in the AHL when he coached the Lake Erie Monsters in 2007-08 and 2008-09. During his time in the AHL, Leach compiled a record of 136-77-26 over four seasons. The Kraken were quite interested in Sacco for their head coaching position last year. Cassidy was the head coach of the P-Bruins before Claude Julien was fired and he was named interim head coach in 2017. However, outside of a run to the finals in 2019, the Bruins suffered first- or second-round exits every other season. If you've been following along with the Bruins' front office, it's not a total stunner that they came to this decision.

Bruce Cassidy, who used to coach in Detroit Red Wings' system ... (Detroit Free Press)

Bruce Cassidy has coaching experience with three NHL teams, and including two as head coach. Could Steve Yzerman want him for the Detroit Red Wings?

Cassidy has extensive experience: He took the Capitals to the playoffs in 2003, but after a slow start the following season, he was fired after 25 games. Contact Helene St. James at [email protected]. Follow her on Twitter @helenestjames. Read more on the Detroit Red Wings and sign up for our Red Wings newsletter. The Wings aren't at a point where they are poised to compete for the Cup, and Yzerman may well be more comfortable bringing someone in on a three-year deal. He has numerous options who have won the Stanley Cup: Trotz (2018, Capitals), Joel Quenneville (2010, 2013 and 2015, Blackhawks), John Tortorella (2004, Tampa Bay Lightning), and Julien (2011, Bruins). Those would all be higher-priced options, starting in the $4 million annually range and likely all would want a contract of about four years. Cassidy was 245-108-46 and 36-37 in the playoffs. He then spent time coaching in the Ontario Hockey League before landing with the Providence Bruins (AHL) in 2008.

It's still not clear what Bruce Cassidy did wrong enough to get fired ... (The Boston Globe)

There is something that general manager Don Sweeney either doesn't want to say or can't quite figure out.

The 2022-23 season starts in about 90 days. In both cases, Sweeney and Lamoriello came up with an easy, tried-and-true excuse. In the three seasons he coached a full 82-game schedule, his messaging was good enough for the Bruins to average 50 wins and deliver 109 points. When the GM comes to such a decision, it’s time to change either the players or the coach — and Sweeney went with the latter. You have to find a way to deliver that message a little differently.” We’re not the best self-starters in the workforce. We like the work. “I felt that both the message and how it was being delivered and more importantly maybe how it was being received,” he said. Or maybe Sweeney thinks getting rid of Cassidy ultimately will provide needed clarity for the roster and the front office. If it’s the latter, Bruins Nation is in for a rough ride into the boards. He likes its composition (like writers, GMs generally are in love with their own creations), yet he doesn’t know whether: Heck, Rick Bowness got dumped here because he woke up one morning, days after directing the Bruins to the Stanley Cup semifinals, and — sonofagun!

Why Did The Bruins Fire Bruce Cassidy? (The Hockey News)

The erstwhile Boston coach seemed to get good results and the team isn't really in a position to rebuild with its current roster.

Sweeney claimed that Cassidy had not lost the room and that the players did not drive the decision, but what if he's just taking a bullet here? In this year's edition of Future Watch, Boston was ranked 29th in the NHL and some of the best prospects - Fabian Lysell, Johnny Beecher, Georgi Merkulov - still need more pro seasoning before they could be counted on to be true difference-makers. After all, Cassidy seemed to be humming along in Boston, even though the Bruins had lost their first-round series against the favored Carolina Hurricanes.

Why the Bruins fired Bruce Cassidy: Coach's style took 'toll' on team ... (The Athletic)

The Bruins are now looking for a coach who will likely have histories of promoting concepts like positivity and growth mindset.

“I’m going to cast the net a little wider,” said Sweeney. “I don’t think it’s an absolute prerequisite. And is it as effective with the group that’s still here? “I felt that both the message and how it was being delivered — and, more important, how it was being received — young and old,” Sweeney said of how Cassidy fell short. Some of the veterans, according to a source familiar with the situation, questioned whether Cassidy’s way with the youngsters was good for the room. Jay Leach and David Quinn, the two top candidates, have histories of promoting concepts like positivity and growth mindset. I don’t believe it’s an absolute prerequisite to have coached behind an NHL bench.” Has it changed with the group that’s still here? Ultimately, I had to make a decision that takes us in a different path.” Or the personnel changes and you cycle it out.” All of them, at one point or another, have staggered under the load of Cassidy’s no-nonsense philosophy. Rick Valette, DeBrusk’s agent, did not respond to an inquiry regarding his client’s state of mind. Over the course of time, it takes its toll.

One would think the Flyers being in the Northeast could help their chances. He's 38-41 (.481) in the postseason.
