Moviegoers, get 2 for 1 at this Drive-in theater in Ocala (WKMG News 6 & ClickOrlando)

Most kids today don't even know what a drive-in is. What better way to experience the traditional way to view a movie on the big screen than from your car.

A few things to know if you plan to visit the Ocala Drive-In. Outside food and drink are NOT permitted. “The pandemic was a terrible thing to happen to this country and a lot of businesses didn’t make it. The theater is open even when it rains. Dogs are allowed on the property if they are leashed, and you can bring lawn chairs to sit outside of your vehicle during the movie. The outdoor venue offers a safe and unique way to watch movies. The children are walking around the grassy area playing with each other before the movie, and families are coming together. The property switched owners a couple of times, then sat vacant until Watzke took over in 2011. Watzke even serves signature dishes from his hometown of New Orleans including the traditional-style muffuletta sandwich. It consists of a muffuletta loaf (9 1/2 inch round bread shipped to the Ocala Drive-In from Gambino’s Bakery in New Orleans ) split horizontally and covered with layers of marinated muffuletta-style olive salad, salami, ham, Swiss cheese, provolone, and mortadella. In fact, at some point during the pandemic, The Ocala Drive-In was the only theater still open playing new releases in the country. Mid to late 60s they added the two wings on each side for a wider screen,” said owner John Watzke. Most kids today don’t even know what a drive-in is.

National Drive-In Movie Day celebrates 1933 origin of the drive-in (UPI.com)

National Drive-In Movie Day, celebrated annually on June 6, commemorates the day the first drive-in movie theater was opened in New Jersey in 1933.

Richard M. Hollingshead Jr., the theater's owner, was inspired by his mother's inability to sit comfortably in standard cinema seats. The holiday marks the June 6, 1933, opening of the Park-In Theater, later known as Camden Drive-In, the first drive-in theater in the United States. Flint's US-23 Drive-In offers a 'reel' nostalgic movie experience ... (Flintside)

The US-23 Digital Drive-In in Flint has been going strong, despite the pandemic, providing moviegoers with a nostalgic drive-in experience every day through ...

“A lot of people come when the gates open at 7:30 p.m. and bring activities to do until showtime. “People that grew up when the drive-in was first being built in the ‘50s, now are grandparents and taking their kids and grandkids,” Thomas says. “However, a lot of things still affected us like prices on supplies and having to provide a lot of PPE equipment like masks and gloves for the staff, extra cleaning procedures, and extra staff to help keep the place clean and extra sanitized. He recommends some tips to get the most out of the experience. “We have put a lot of T.L.C. back into the theater,” Thomas says. You can put the chairs in front of your vehicle. The lot holds about 1,000 cars and typically gets full during the summer weekends. “We put a fresh coat of paint on everything, and the third screen allows for more variety in the movie showings. After purchasing the theater, the company added a third screen and various updates. “Sometimes you’d see blotches on the screen, or scratches and lines. Thomas says the digital projection far outweighs its film predecessor when it comes to picture quality. Believe it or not, Michigan still has a number of drive-in movie theaters showing blockbuster movies.

“As we have done in the past, we reached out to Waze, who verified that drivers who enter I-395 at Boundary Channel Drive are not instructed to immediately cross multiple lanes of traffic to use the Route 1 exit ramp,” she wrote in an email. “We take a wide range of factors into account to deliver driving routes — including road size, directness and estimated travel time,” Google emailed in a statement. “I don't go to an exit and it's no longer there.” That dissuades the risky behavior. Waze apparently addressed the issue long ago, in part thanks to a man named Alan Boyd. Dave Statter sees this play out every day from his high-rise apartment in Crystal City. The former newsman has video cameras trained on I-395 below.
