AOC calls out Dems who won't say 'Latinx' -- despite backlash to term (New York Post)

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defended using the word “Latinx” to describe Hispanic men and women over the weekend and slammed her Democratic colleagues.

“If you are speaking to a particular person who prefers ‘Latinx,’ then, by all means, use the term,” Torres later clarified. “If the answer is ‘no’, how did ‘Latinx’ come to be the term to use in government and Corporate America?” Ocasio-Cortez went on to claim that while “Latinx” is more convenient in written form, another gender-neutral term, “Latine,” is a better alternative when speaking. “But for people who enjoy trying to figure out language and have it meet the modern age, that’s kind of where it’s at.” “[You] don’t have to make drama over it.” “Like, this is not about you.”

What is Latinx? While many are comfortable with using the phrase, which refers to Latin American communities in the U.S., some find it controversial.

There are a few reasons some feel the term "Latinx" is controversial. On one hand, per Pew Research Center, it ignores the rules of the Spanish language. The survey also shows that most Hispanics who have heard the term are women between the ages of 18 and 29, who tend to be left-leaning and have a Bachelor's degree. AOC endorses primary challenger to House Democratic campaign ... (Washington Examiner)

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) announced her endorsement of a left-wing rival to the powerful head of House Democrats' campaign arm on Tuesday.

Ocasio-Cortez previously called on Maloney to resign as head of the DCCC if he were to take on Jones in a primary. In a statement following the public announcement of the endorsement, Biaggi lauded Ocasio-Cortez as the “standard-bearer” of the Democratic Party. She also slammed Maloney’s decision to run in the 17th District, noting that as DCCC chairman, “his job is to maximize the number of seats that we have in the Democratic majority.” Maloney said he doesn't see any conflict between running the DCCC and making sure he is in a position to hold on to his seat in the House. “I am honored to have received overwhelming support locally, including endorsements from nearly 40 elected leaders and Democratic Party committees,” Maloney told the Washington Examiner. “I respect Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and have worked with her on a number of policy matters, including as a co-sponsor of the Green New Deal. But, on her endorsement, we are going to have to agree to disagree.” Now, support for Maloney's opponent, state Sen. Alessandra Biaggi, has even more support. In a statement to the Washington Examiner, Maloney played down Ocasio-Cortez’s decision to intervene in the race, maintaining that “this election comes down to voters in NY-17.”

AOC bucks Dem campaign chair Maloney, backs Biaggi to oust him (New York Post)

Firebrand progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has escalated her feud with fellow New York congress member Sean Patrick Maloney.

Biaggi won election to the state Senate that same year by defeating one-time legislative powerbroker Jeff Klein, who had led a band of renegade Democrats that helped the GOP hold the state Senate for years. This election comes down to voters in NY-17 and I am honored to have received overwhelming support locally, including endorsements from nearly 40 elected leaders and Democratic Party committees,” Rep. Maloney (D-Westchester) said in a statement Tuesday. Democrats are defending a slim majority in the House of Representatives this year in the face of political winds that appear favorable to the GOP.
