NASCAR Cup Series at Gateway: Joey Logano outduels Kyle Busch ... (CBSSports.com)

Logano gets his second win of the season in inaugural Cup Series race at World Wide Technology Raceway.

And not only that, but McDowell now also has a new career-high for laps led in a season (38). McDowell went on to finish 18th. Logano got a terrific launch on the ensuing restart, which allowed him to drive into Turn 1 on the inside of Busch and then slide up in front of him in Turn 2. - Austin Cindric was a factor early in the race, starting from the outside pole, leading 26 laps and winning stage one before finishing 11th. After pitting for tires under a late-race caution, Haley drove from 28th with less than 20 laps to go all the way to a 14th place finish. Allmendinger won the Xfinity race at Portland, then finished 10th to score his first top 10 on a oval in a Cup race since Talladega in the fall of 2018. As a full-time driver in the Xfinity Series, Allmendinger spent Friday and Saturday at Portland International Raceway while Camping World Truck Series driver Ben Rhodes practiced and qualified his Cup car. After the two raced for the lead and the win throughout the closing laps, a late-race caution forced Joey Logano and Kyle Busch to have to race each other for the victory in overtime. He tried to keep sliding up in front of us and wasn't able to because I wasn't willing to just back off and let him slide up in front. For Almirola, it's his first top five since the Daytona 500 back in February. And I deserve everything that they do -- I can't believe that I continue to make the same mistakes and overdrive the corners and drive into guys." But their race for the win changed with four laps to go when Kevin Harvick suffered a brake failure entering Turn 3, pounding the outside wall and bringing out a caution to send the race to overtime. Although the ensuing damage to Hamlin's toe link put him many laps down, Hamlin proceeded to make life very difficult for Chastain the rest of the race.

Joey Logano wins inaugural Cup race at World Wide Technology ... (NASCAR on NBC Sports)

Joey Logano passed Kyle Busch in a dramatic overtime to win the inaugural Cup race at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway on Sunday.

WHO HAD A BAD RACE: Denny Hamlin’s day went downhill after a bump from Ross Chastain sent Hamlin into the wall and damaged his car. On the restart, Elliott lined up behind Chastain and hit the back of Chastain’s car, sending up the track. Briscoe led the first 27 laps from the pole before he had to pit for a flat left rear tire. Chastain’s bump sent Denny Hamlin into the wall, leading to a caution on Lap 66. I was going to put my hand out the window and signal to Kurt (Busch) to push me along and Joey (Logano) was half a car back out my window trying to see it, so the hand signal was going to be irrelevant, so I didn’t do it, which kind of made Kurt too far back. Logano got the lead in Turn 1.

What drivers said at World Wide Technology Raceway (NASCAR on NBC Sports)

What drivers said: Here is what Cup drivers had to say after Sunday's inaugural Cup race at World Wide Technology Raceway.

We overcame a spin on the track, and also made a mistake on pit road that caused NASCAR to issue us a penalty. We contend with the guys that win these races every week, and it’s just a matter of putting the whole thing together over an entire race. We fought back from one lap down to finish 16th, which is saying a lot since we were as far back as 30th during portions of the race. We made a big adjustment to tighten the handling of our Chevy late in the race, and it really helped. I was going to put my hand out the window and signal to Kurt (Busch) to push me along and Joey (Logano) was half a car back out my window trying to see it, so the hand signal was going to be irrelevant, so I didn’t do it, which kind of made Kurt too far back. AUSTIN DILLON — Finished 16th: “The speed is there in our 3CHI Chevrolet and we were able to showcase it today, especially early in the race when we ran up front and were able to contend for the lead at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway. It was a crazy day for this RCR team. In hindsight, if we would have made our car tighter earlier, we could have had a different day. It was kind of a mistake-free day and ran inside the top-five all day. I’m proud of everyone for the hard work to put us back into the top 15.” Obviously a really strong weekend for Team Penske great to get Joey (Logano) another win, we’ve got a lot of strengths as a team. It was a good day for us. I did it to him; I knew he was going to do it to me.

What Drivers Said: World Wide Technology Raceway (Sports Illustrated)

It was a memorable debut for the NASCAR Cup Series in its first-ever race at the 1.25-mile oval just outside St. Louis.

We made a big adjustment to tighten the handling of our Chevy late in the race, and it really helped. I think we have some things we can work on to get up there and be a little bit faster than some of those guys. I’m proud of everyone for the hard work to put us back into the top-15.” I was going to put my hand out the window and signal to Kurt (Busch) to push me along and Joey (Logano) was half a car back out my window trying to see it, so the hand signal was going to be irrelevant, so I didn’t do it, which kind of made Kurt too far back. It was kind of a mistake free day and ran inside the top-five all day. I can’t believe I continued to make those same mistakes; overdrive the corners and drive into guys. We needed a top-10 run and we got that today with the No. 43 Bommarito Automotive Group Chevy. “I thought there was going to be a hand signal on when it was going to be go time and I was going to push the hell out of the 18 (Kyle Busch). We did the whole brother miscommunication. I did it to him; I knew he was going to do it to me. It was a lot of fun to race here, and looking forward to coming back.” We crossed back and forth there in the last lap there a couple of times. It was a lot of fun.

I think what you look at for St. Louis what we did here this weekend is a huge success for the city, for our sport, for the fans. It kind of makes the track a little bit wider because the right side is better, moving to the right side. You have a chance if you are in the front. I don't know how you don't -- you have a smaller car? I want to make sure that he got the recognition for what he did. Q. Coming into the year, we kept hearing the summer months hopefully was going to be that mark when inventory and parts and pieces would be a little bit better, so you say, hopefully we'll get there. At the same time, like I said, as a team, you can't just leave that on the table. Honestly, I thought whoever got the lead was going to win the race. I think that kind of mixes up the field a little bit. It's not a lot, but it gives us the opportunity to try a few things and try to build our notebook as we move forward. I was trying to remember the last time we had a twofer, so to speak. It's just how up and down it is right now with the learning curve and going to new race tracks and trying to understand the car.
