Maybe Kaapo Kakko felt left out. If he did, he did something about it in the Rangers' win.

Good for the Rangers, who will take a commanding 2-0 series lead to Tampa, Fla., for Game 3 on Sunday afternoon. “I just stayed in front of the net and we got some chances before that and Foxy got the puck and made a nice pass. Just put it in the net.’’

Lightning-Rangers Game 2 report card: Streak ends, series goes on (Tampa Bay Times)

New York snaps Tampa Bay's NHL-record stretch of wins in playoff games immediately following a loss.

In the third, Zibanejad beat Vasilevskiy stickside on a wrist shot from the left circle. Reaves got his stick between Maroon’s legs, and Maroon responded with a punch to the face. Vasilevskiy had a clear view of the rebound attempt, but it still beat him gloveside. They got pucks behind New York’s defense, won battles and got shots to the net. For a system that takes a tremendous toll on their bodies? We know this much: The Rangers aren’t simply going to bend to their will.

'Unreal' Igor Shesterkin provides more heroics to close out Rangers ... (New York Post)

Two games into a series that was billed as a duel between the world's two best goaltenders, Igor Shesterkin has two wins over Andrei Vasilevskiy.

The Rangers seem to have figured something out with Vasilevskiy: His vulnerable spot is to the high blocker side. In Shesterkin’s case, most of the wins have very much belonged to him, and with 29 saves, so did this one. The Rangers were asking Igor Shesterkin to go win them the game. Obviously, we have a lot of trust in him and kinda let him do his thing. Obviously we try to limit the chances that he sees by blocking shots and doing those little things. For much of Friday night, it looked as if Game 2 against the Lightning wouldn’t have to be one of those nights for the Rangers. They were controlling the game.

Igor Shesterkin was asked about his comment that Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy is the best in the world after the Rangers' Game 2 win.

Ahead of Sunday’s Game 3, Shesterkin was asked about his comment that Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy is the best in the world after the Rangers win. Perhaps he also doesn’t want to poke the bear and give the Lightning any bulletin-board material. After a Game 1 thrashing, the Rangers handed the Lightning their first back-to-back playoff losses since 2019.

The Rangers had scored on the power play in six straight games and in 11 of their first 15, but they were 0-for-4 in Game 2 and it did not deter them in a 3-2 win at Madison Square Garden to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. The Lightning hope returning home and the late momentum they generated to pull within a goal late in Game 2 will carry over to Game 3. New York has won eight consecutive postseason games on home ice and now hit the road, where Tampa Bay coach John Cooper will have the last change for Games 3 and 4. Tampa Bay hasn't been able to keep up with or slow New York's speed in the first two games of this series. The Avalanche are 5-0 on the road during the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs and have shown a penchant of not being intimidated by raucous crowds like the one they'll be playing in front of at Rogers Place on Saturday. Edmonton has been outscored 12-6 in Games 1 and 2 and must tighten up defensively if it hopes to get back into the series. NY Rangers bring confidence to Tampa, but will have to earn ... (The Journal News / Lohud.com)

The New York Rangers have won four straight playoff games and are oozing with confidence as the Eastern Conference Final shifts to Tampa Bay.

"That just goes to show the character and the type of people that we have in the locker room and in that organization. Rangers head trainer Jim Ramsay has been the man behind the scenes, working to keep the 24-year-old defenseman on the ice in spite of a lower-body injury that's lingered for weeks. He's the best, and (associate trainer) Sean (Murdoch) and (massage therapist) Ty (Stratton). They're a great group and they do whatever they can to help us get back out there." He's now six wins away from being a part of his first championship team, with making sure Lindgren is ready to play each night a good way to aid that cause. There's really one goal in mind, and if everyone's pushing towards that one goal, the odds are you're going to have more success at it." A disruptive forecheck has been at the forefront of Gallant's game plan from the moment he was hired last summer. "Our forwards coming back and helping them makes a huge difference," Gallant said. Our compete level is a big part of our group. Our forecheck is a big part of our group. "I don't know if it's so much momentum game to game as it maybe is confidence," forward Tyler Motte explained Saturday. "Obviously, we’ve got a lot of guys that are playing well, which is great for our group. But confidence is built over time, and the Rangers are oozing it lately. Now with the travel, with the different series, different opponents, different buildings, momentum sometimes has to be earned and started every single night.

Rangers' return for Joey Gallo is looking better by the day (The Dallas Morning News)

ARLINGTON — Someday, and that day seems to be coming sooner rather than later, Joey Gallo may be remembered with other Dallas-Fort Worth pro sports greats.

I just want to thank the team for the opportunity and make the best of it.” To wit: He bobbled the first ball hit to him Saturday for an error. “And in the case of [Smith], in the case of Duran, these guys were performing down there. He had only started four games at third this season at Frisco, 11 in the Arizona Fall League last year and three at Hickory after the trade. The Rangers will deal with the long-term situation later. Though he has seven hits in his last 13 at-bats, Ibáñez is still hitting only .216 for the season with one home run. And though Duran is younger than fellow infielder Davis Wendzel, one of the team’s two first-round picks in 2019 who is currently at Triple-A Round Rock, he was the choice. We need a little bit of impact with the bat. If you are keeping track: That’s three of the four players acquired for Gallo less than a year ago who have started for the Rangers this week. The Rangers did not provide a timeline for recovery. The Rangers could have called up one of outfielders Nick Solak, Willie Calhoun or Leody Taveras, but third base is the priority. It was just the fifth hit in 28 at-bats with runners in scoring position over the last four games.
