The Phillies have fired manager Joe Girardi after an extremely disappointing start to 2022 that has them 12 games back already.

"I don't worry about my job. "I don't worry about my job. I don't worry about it." After that game, Girardi was asked if he was concerned about his job status. I believe we have a talented group that can get back on track, and I am confident that Rob, with his experience and familiarity with our club, is the right man to lead us going forward." The team got off to a 22-29 start this season after spending past the luxury tax for the first time in franchise history.

Philadelphia hired Girardi prior to the 2020 season and he went 132-141 as the team's skipper, failing to reach the postseason.

"It has been a frustrating season for us up until this point, as we feel that our club has not played up to its capabilities,” said Dombrowski in a statement released by the club. Whether it's Girardi, his staff (coach Bobby Meacham was also dismissed), the player development wing or the front office that's responsible for these imperfections remains an open question. For now, that will be Thomson.

Meanwhile, the Phillies let Neris leave for a two-year deal from the Houston Astros, and he has a 2.01 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 22⅓ innings. The bullpen has the highest walk rate in the majors (11.7%), with Girardi noting that the Phillies sometimes prioritized pure stuff over command. The Phillies were seventh in the NL through Thursday. But Kiermaier is in the final year of a backloaded $53 million contract that would’ve put the Phillies over the luxury-tax threshold, a step ownership didn’t decide to take until spring training. Instead, the Phillies doubled down on adding offense at the expense of defense, signing Schwarber and Castellanos for a total of $179 million at a time when the baseball isn’t carrying over the fence with as much frequency. “I think the pieces are the pieces that they have,” Girardi said in his radio interview. “But I think if we catch the ball and make the plays we can, we can be adequate. But interim manager Rob Thomson will be saddled with the same defense, bullpen, and Frankenstein’s monster of a roster that let down Girardi for three years running. For two years, the Phillies have taken the opposite approach. In 2020, the Phillies had the third-fewest defensive runs saved, according to Sports Info Solutions, and the worst bullpen ERA of any team in baseball. In 2021, they ranked last in DRS and 25th in bullpen ERA. This year: last again in DRS, 21st in bullpen ERA. It’s ingrained in who they are. There are lineups to configure, bullpens to run, in-game moves to make, egos to stroke, and messages to send that will get 26 players to buy in on a nightly basis for six months.

After an offseason of bringing in expensive veterans like Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos, the team has failed to produce on the field. The Phillies are 22-29 and have already fallen 12 games behind the New York Mets in the National League East. The Phillies firing Sleepy Joe Girardi means nothing if Rob Thomson ... (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

Larry Bowa said last year that Thomson was the majors' best managerial candidate who'd never gotten a chance to manage. Advice: Be like Bo, not like Joe.

Kapler hired Thomson to his first staff, so Thomson predated Girardi in Philadelphia by two years, though the Phillies did not consider Thomson when they replaced Kapler. But it was big, and it was the easiest to address. And will Thomson then contradict himself, as Girardi did with Familia the night he’d defended his policy? Girardi’s toothless, duplicitous leadership wasn’t the only reason the Phillies underachieved, and it might not have been the biggest. Pederson hit his 12th home run and iced an extra-innings game thanks to that strategic miscarriage. “I’ve always wanted to manage. Not the unfocused bullpens, not the errant fielders, not the boneheaded baserunners, and certainly not the selfish, swing-for-the-fences hitters, from whom so much was expected and with whom so little has been achieved. Further, they are hosting Millville, N.J., native Mike Trout and the Angels this weekend. As for Thomson, “He’s the best coach I’ve ever been around. “That’s why I’m driving home with my stuff in the car.” Then, Friday morning, Dombrowski called Girardi in and canned him. He loved Joe, but Joe had to go.

Phillies Fire Manager Joe Girardi (MLB Trade Rumors)

The Phillies have fired manager Joe Girardi in the wake of their recent free-fall in the NL East standings. Read more at MLB Trade Rumors.

The Phils will be a team worth monitoring closely over the next six weeks, because if Thomson’s unable to right the ship, the focus will turn to the possibility of trading some notable veterans in advance of this year’s Aug. 2 deadline. Hired in advance of the 2020 season, the now-57-year-old Girardi came to the Phillies as an experienced dugout leader whom owner John Middleton hoped could pull the club out of what has now been more than a decade-long playoff drought. Each of Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola and Kyle Gibson are sporting ERAs comfortably south of 4.00, while Ranger Suarez and Zach Eflin have been at least serviceable in the mid-4.00s. Overall, the Phillies’ rotation ranks 14th with a 4.02 ERA, although their sixth-ranked 3.49 FIP (fielding-independent pitching) naturally suggests that the defense has let Philadelphia starters down. Ultimately, it’ll have to come down to the Phillies’ lineup if they’re to turn things around. But even he’s not operating neat 100%, as he’s dealing with a torn ligament in his elbow that has relegated him to designated hitter duties because he’s not able to throw from the outfield. Girardi faced plenty of criticism for his usage of the team’s bullpen at times, including some recent handling of closer Corey Knebel. Time will tell whether a managerial change will bring about better results from the relief corps, but it seems unlikely Thomson will be able to bring about significant change with the same group of personnel in the ’pen. “It has been a frustrating season for us up until this point, as we feel that our club has not played up to its capabilities,” said president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski in a statement within today’s press release. More concerning, however, has been the team’s ineffectiveness in other areas. The trio of Nick Nelson, Andrew Bellatti and James Norwood, for instance, have accounted for nearly a third of the Phillies’ total innings of relief work. Some of that, of course, falls on the manager’s usage of the relievers at his disposal. To fill Thomson’s role, the Phillies have promoted Mike Calitri from quality assurance coach to bench coach. Joe Girardi is out as the Phillies manager, as the team announced today that he’s been “relieved of his duties.” Coaching assistant Bobby Meacham has also been dismissed.

He nearly landed the Phillies gig when they hired Kapler, and has been in the running for other managerial posts since. Quatraro is similar to Espada in that it seems like it's only a matter of time before either one lands the big job. Espada has interviewed with the Cubs and the Rangers in the past. Ausmus would not be a particularly inspired choice, but he was once considered a top managerial prospect and he seems certain to get a third chance at the helm somewhere, be it in Philadelphia or elsewhere. He was hired by Phillies executive Dave Dombrowski in Detroit, however, and he was considered a serious candidate to land the New York Mets job over the winter.

Joe Girardi fired by Phillies, replaced by Rob Thomson (The Washington Post)

PHILADELPHIA — Joe Girardi was fired by the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday after his team's terrible start, becoming the first major league manager to lose ...

Whether a manager should be held responsible for the less-than-perfect construction of his roster is one teams answer year after year, disappointing summer after disappointing summer. Thompson inherits a team that went 4-12 to finish May, a team on which three key sluggers — Rhys Hoskins, Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos — have on-base-plus-slugging percentages that are at least 150 points lower than in 2021. That unique affinity for demoralizing losses pushed Girardi’s role in molding a winner to the forefront. In fairness to Girardi and the Phillies (22-29), they aren’t the only NL East team watching what was supposed to be a competitive division slip out of reach before the all-star break. Their bullpen ranks in MLB’s bottom third by ERA, and they are fourth with 14 losses in games they led at one time. They will begin testing that hypothesis against the Los Angeles Angels Friday night. Their foreseeable weaknesses on defense and in the bullpen have tormented them. Segura broke a finger and will be out for up to three months. But the Phillies did not spend more on their roster than anyone but the Mets, New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers to finish in third place. They began June with just three more wins than the hapless Washington Nationals, barely holding off the Miami Marlins for third in the National League East. They watched the New York Mets match the third-largest division lead entering June since division play began in 1969. The team named bench coach Rob Thomson interim manager. Why Joe Girardi is taking the fall for the Philadelphia Phillies' $233 ... (ESPN)

Expectations -- and the payroll -- were high heading into the season. But can you really blame the manager for the disaster in Philly?

Still, the Phillies have outscored their opponents this season and yet are seven games under .500. The biggest reason for this is a 4-10 record in one-run games. The "new voice in the clubhouse" Dombrowski mentioned is interim manager Rob Thomson. As he was Girardi's bench coach, he's not exactly a new voice, but Dombrowski has limited options given this is happening midstream. It won't be because of better health (which would help, but pretty much every team in the majors can make that statement). All of this was made exponentially worse when defending NL MVP Bryce Harper injured his elbow on a throw in April and thus has had to be consigned to the DH slot ever since. "It has been a frustrating season for us up until this point, as we feel that our club has not played up to its capabilities," said the Phillies' president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski, via the team's news release announcing the move. (FanGraphs has the Phillies' relievers 11th in rest-of-season fWAR projections.) Perhaps a master bullpen technician like Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell or Tampa Bay Rays skipper Kevin Cash could extract more, or maybe there's not more there to get. Still, to blame Girardi entirely for the Phillies' lackluster season would be unfair. If Girardi could have flanked his iffy corner defenders around an elite up-the-middle defensive crew, then maybe it could work at least well enough to support the pitching staff. If you're a manager overseeing a ballclub attached to the numbers we've mentioned so far, you better watch your butt. A payroll like that sets a clear standard of expectation for everyone in a baseball organization. You don't spend that kind of money on a baseball roster for any other reason than that. That's the Phillies' 2022 payroll -- $233 million, fourth-highest in the majors, per Spotrac -- and it's well into luxury tax territory.

After a 22-29 start that has put the team on track to miss the playoffs for the 11th straight year, the Phillies have fired Joe Girardi as manager.

I'm still going to prepare some, but I'm going to have my confidence in the coaches around me to keep me informed of information. Girardi noted struggles in the bullpen and some slow offensive starts among the "number of reasons we didn't win." He previously spent 28 years in the Yankees' organization, including 10 seasons when Girardi served as manager from 2008 to 2017. His first year with Philadelphia was the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. But buried deep in the NL East standings and with a sagging bullpen, defensive deficiencies and slumbering starts from some of the team's high-priced veterans, Girardi paid the price for Philadelphia's poor start. After the Phillies' announcement, Girardi made his regular appearance on Sirius XM's MLB Network Radio, saying, "We underperformed and that falls on me.

"I think we can make the playoffs," Dombrowski said. "We're now into June and I'm not going to say we'd do it every time, but we'll take it case by case," he said. "I think Rob provides a different type of communication aspect with the players than what was taking place," Dombrowski said. "I don't think you can get guys to cover more space, but we're constantly working," he said. Dombrowski stayed in-house with an interim skipper rather than engage in a lengthy process of opening the job to outsiders. "Our coaching staff is constantly working on how to field ground balls, throwing, catching balls on the run. Dombrowski added: "The one thing you need to constantly look at with the club -- we need to be a good hitting club. "I'm not directly saying it's the manager's fault," Dombrowski said. "I think by the end he was in a much more relieved state," Dombrowski said later Friday, at a news conference to announce Girardi's firing as Phillies manager. So he played the only card he could in hopes of sparking the team and turning around the season. So in 37 of his 51 games this year, Girardi had to start BOTH Castellanos and Schwarber in the outfield. Here’s the biggest example of the flawed roster Girardi had to deal with: The Phillies were an awful defensive team in 2020 and again in 2021. Girardi was replaced on an interim basis by Rob Thomson, who will manage the club for the rest of the year. Sure, there were curious decisions made along the way that didn’t help — bullpen usage and his handling of young prospects in the bigs are top of that list — but mostly, the final verdict is this: Joe Girardi was not a miracle worker.” But when baseball historians look back at the the Girardi era and assess his performance, they’ll write something like this: “Joe Girardi was not a miracle worker. It was an all-too-familiar struggle; the club was 110-112 in Girardi’s first two seasons as the Philly skipper and never was a serious championship contender, despite hopeful expectations.
