Cheeses recalled

Many cheese products are being recalled due to the potential of Listeria contamination on Thursday, according to the FDA.

Thousands of pounds of cheese have been pulled from shelves after potential listeria contamination caused a packaging company to issue a recall.

The cheese packaging company, Paris Brothers, Inc., of Kansas City, Missouri, issued a voluntary recall of several specific cheese products on Sunday, May 29. According to the Food and Drug Administration, the cheese products have the “potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.” The recalled cheese products were distributed to grocery stores at multiple locations in Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Iowa, Oklahoma, Nebraska, South Dakota, and a single store in Florida.

Specific lots of cheddar, brie and pecorino are among the products potentially tainted with a harmful bacteria.

An estimated 1,600 Americans get listeriosis each year, and about 260 die, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Listeria infections can be serious and sometimes fatal in the very young, frail or elderly or those with weakened immune systems. • Paris Brothers Mild Cheddar

Paris Brothers, Inc. has recalled eight of its cheese products because of possible listeria contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said.

Consumers who purchased the affected products can also return the cheese for a refund and learn more here. Listeria, or listeriosis, is an infection that results from eating contaminated food. To date, no illnesses have been reported.
