Tropical storm watches or warnings could be issued for Florida - CNN (CNN)

Alex, the first named storm of the season, could form later today or tomorrow, threatening southern Florida.

"To me, this indicates that the wind shear in the area may slow the organization of the potential storm and, for now, keep it from growing rapidly." Wind shear is the change in wind speed and direction as you move up in the sky. "Whether the storm organizes or not, a significant flood event is possible across south Florida and the Keys," CNN meteorologist Chad Myers says. -- the system will need to strengthen and reach sustained winds of 39+ or higher. "These details remain uncertain as it will depend on the exact track the system takes. "Tropical storm watches or warnings could be required for some of these areas later today."

The National Hurricane Center issued tropical storm warnings and watches ahead of Tropical Storm Alex, which is expected to approach Florida on Friday.

The hurricane center said the disturbance is disorganized and moving slowly across the Gulf of Mexico, where it faces some unfriendly conditions but is still predicted to slightly strengthen. The official season lasts for six months and ends on Nov. 30. Those winds are expected to pick up slightly if it strengthens into a tropical storm. South Florida could see about four to eight inches of rain on Friday and Saturday, with some small areas seeing up to a foot, according to the hurricane center. The worst of the weather will likely stretch from Friday afternoon through late Saturday night. The system is expected to make landfall on Florida’s west coast Saturday.

Tropical Storm watches issued in Florida for weather system in Gulf ... (Tampa Bay Times)

The effects on the Tampa Bay area from the system are likely going to be minimal, forecasters say.

The weather service says the highest chance of rain will come Saturday, where it’s been pegged at 70 percent for Tampa Bay with a chance of thunderstorms. While it’s possible the storm’s track could shift north to make landfall within Tampa Bay or closer to it, Flannery says the shift wouldn’t change much for this weekend’s outlook locally. “There’s always a chance for deviation but the reality is, this is just a weak system,” Flannery said. Watches also were issued for southeast Florida, portions of Cuba and the northwestern Bahamas. The chance of rain Friday night will be 60 percent, while Sunday morning has a 40 percent chance. Maximum sustained winds were at 35 mph.

“Heavy rains will begin to affect South Florida and the Keys Friday and continue through Saturday,” the Hurricane Center said in an online post. As a Pacific storm, Hurricane Agatha caused flooding and mudslides that killed at least 11 people and left 20 missing in Mexico, officials said. But local flooding is likely and winds could be somewhat strong. A system becomes a tropical storm when winds reach 39 mph (62 kph). The National Hurricane Center predicts that rainfall up to 10 inches (25 centimeters) is possible in South Florida, including the Florida Keys. The storm is not expected to produce huge winds or major storm surge. The National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storm once known as Agatha in the Pacific Ocean will be known as Alex in the Atlantic Ocean basin.

Talking the Tropics With Mike: Tropical storm WARNING for parts of ... (WOKV)

The area of “disturbed” weather - '91-L' - disorganized clusters of showers & heavy thunderstorms - continue over parts of the Caribbean & far Southern Gulf of ...

In any case, we’ve already has a couple of dust plumes spread west to the Caribbean & Gulf with the peak of Saharan dust typically in June & July. historic storms are retired [Florence & Michael in ’18... Dorian in ’19 & Laura, Eta & Iota in ‘20 & Ida in ‘21]). The WMO decided - beginning last year - that the Greek alphabet will be no longer used & instead there will be a supplemental list of names if the first list is exhausted (has only happened three times - 2005, 2020 & 2021). The naming of tropical cyclones began on a consistent basis in 1953. On this track - of what looks to be a weaker system heavily weighted on the east side - heavy rain & isolated tornadoes will be the main concern for Central & South Florida late through Sat. with rapidly improving conditions Sunday while NE Fl./SE Ga. remains on the northern fringe - at most - of any possible impacts. In my personal opinion, way too much is made about the presence of Saharan dust & how it relates to tropical cyclones. The area of “disturbed” weather - ‘91-L’ - disorganized clusters of showers & heavy thunderstorms - continue over parts of the Caribbean & far Southern Gulf of Mexico. In fact, satellite & radar data shows a large cluster of thunderstorms that more resembles a mesoscale convective complex vs. are seasonally warm - 80+ degrees F - over the Gulf & Caribbean & would support a tropical system... at least so far (GFS did well w/ Agatha over the E. Pacific last week). The general trend & track will be to the northeast with increasing forward speed nearing & crossing Fl. by Saturday then continuing northeast gradually veering a little more east over the open Western & Central Atlantic through early next week well east of the U.S. east coast. Saharan dust is spread west each year from Africa by the prevailing winds (from east to west over the Atlantic). Dry air - yellow/orange/red/pink. Widespread dust is indicative of dry air that can impede the development of tropical cyclones. 15-20 mph with gusts 20+ mph Sunday out of the northeast... 10-20 mph by Sat. afternoon out of the E/SE with higher gusts, especially at the beaches... shear out of the west remains strong - 30+ mph [in some instances 50+ mph!] - & will likely keep what could become Alex heavily weighted with its heavy rain & some wind on the east side of any circulation. * some uptick in rip currents at area beaches, especially by Sat. afternoon into Sunday - always surf & swim with a buddy & as close to a lifeguard as possible...
