'The Real Housewives of Dubai': Chanel Ayan Blows up Dinner ... (Showbiz Cheat Sheet)

'The Real Housewives of Dubai' starts with a bang when Chanel Ayan comes for Caroline Stanbury over being left out of her hens party.

“You said to me this one [gesturing at Stanbury] called you and told you that she’s only inviting important people to her boat party because I wasn’t important.” “I was absolutely right not to invite Ayan to my hen night,” Stanbury said in a confessional. “I love her, I wish her all the best,” she said gesturing to Stanbury. “So she wanted her closest people next to her.” “That’s my opinion,” she said. “Nothing’s going to cleanse the energy,” Stanbury said.

'Real Housewives of Dubai' review: a reality show that doesn't ... (The National)

The show started with a disclaimer that it 'does not represent Emirati society as a whole'

The closest the show veers into traditional Real Housewives territory in terms of feuds and drama is at the end, when Ali organises a dinner for all six women at Ce La Vi. This is the first time they are all together, as Ayan and Al Madani weren’t invited to Stanbury’s bachelorette party earlier in the episode. In the first episode, the show seems to struggle to find its place. While the show is clearly hyper-edited, those editing skills fall short a couple of times. “[It's] only 12 per cent of the local population that makes up Dubai,” says Brooks. “The other 88 per cent is expats. The primary purpose of this series is to entertain.” After releasing a controversial trailer last month, Bravo’s Real Housewives of Dubai has been broadcast around the world.

Although set in the UAE, it is catered to Western audiences and does revive an Orientalist approach that one would have hoped to be rid of in this day and age. It is universally understood that those walking down a red carpet are celebrities of note, usually dressed to the nines. Senior curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Sonnet Stanfill, told BBC Culture: “Red as a color has long been associated with prestige, royalty, and aristocracy. The primary purpose of this series is to entertain.”
