When the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back from royal life their status within "the firm" changed.

However, when it comes to jubilee balcony appearances there is precedent for just a handful of royals to appear. However, all may not be finalized as far as the Platinum Jubilee balcony goes. “After careful consideration, the Queen has decided this year’s traditional Trooping the Colour balcony appearance on Thursday 2nd June will be limited to Her Majesty and those Members of the Royal Family who are currently undertaking official public duties on behalf of The Queen,” a spokesman told reporters last month as preparations for the events were announced.

Though Thursday's Trooping the Colour parade celebrates the Queen's official birthday, it is doubling as a curtain-raiser for her four-day jubilee weekend. They returned to the UK to visit the Queen in a secret meeting in April, and Harry attended a memorial service for his late grandfather Prince Philip last year, but they have not joined a royal event together since that departure. The Sussexes have flown to the UK from their home in California for the Queen's jubilee events

Buckingham Palace announced last month that Meghan, Harry, and other non-working royal members were not invited to join the Queen on the balcony this year, eliminating one major public appearance the Sussexes could've had. Harry and Meghan arrived in London yesterday with their children. The Queen's birthday parade, Trooping the Colour, is ongoing in London this morning, and so far, photos have come out of Kate Middleton and her and Prince William's three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis in the carriage procession.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were spotted in the Major General's Office at Buckingham Palace during the Trooping the Colour 2022 parade.

She was photographed giggling with the Queen’s great-granddaughters Savannah Phillips, 11, Isla Phillips, 10, Mia Tindall, 8 and Lena Tindall, 3. The pair seemed to arrive in a low-key manner but were later spotted chatting with other members of the royal family, including the Queen’s cousin Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made a subtle appearance at the 2022 Trooping the Colour parade Thursday as part of Queen Elizabeth II’s four-day Platinum Jubilee celebration in London.

The celebration will wrap up with a special parade through central London on Sunday, June 5. The tradition is believed to have started during the reign of King George II in 1748. Instead, they joined extended members of the royal family in viewing the Horse Guards Parade from the Major General's Office, which overlooks the parade grounds. Prince Harry, 37, and Meghan, 40, who arrived in the U.K. alongside their two children — Archie and Lilibet — were excluded from the lineup because they are no longer senior working members of the royal family. To see her in an element of privacy was nice," Harry said. (The Cambridge children — Prince George, 8, Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 4) also made their carriage debut.)

The queen had previously said that Harry and Meghan would not be able to join her on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, saying this privilege would be reserved only for working members of the royal family. At least two protesters, one of whom was wearing a mock crown, were dragged away by police after they attempted to interrupt the opening minutes of the queen’s birthday parade. She then went back into the palace before re-emerging with a full complement of working royals, including Kate, William and their children to observe a six minute flypast of 70 aircraft, one for each of her years on the throne. The California-based couple were said to have arrived discreetly at Horse Guards Parade in London by car with their children, in contrast to some other members of the family who arrived publicly in horse-drawn carriages. Her Majesty, who has been experiencing mobility problems, used a stick but otherwise walked unaided. Official royal sources told the media that Harry and Meghan and their family were ensconced with other members of the royal family in the Major General’s Office, a large ceremonial room with a prime view of the ceremony, known as Trooping the Colour, which marks the queen’s official birthday.

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and Prince Andrew were absent from the royal family's annual gathering on the Buckingham Palace balcony for Trooping the Colour.

With the Queen previously announcing that only working royals would appear, that meant no Harry, 37, and Markle, 40, who opted out of royal duties in January 2020. “They’re very well aware this makes a statement. This year, over 1,400 soldiers and hundreds of horses and musicians came together for the traditional parade, which was followed by the royal family appearing on the palace balcony to wave to the thousands of spectators gathered below.

The visit marks their first trip back to England as a family, since making their royal exit in January 2020.

While it will be a bit of a family reunion for Meghan and Harry, they won't be joining the queen and other members of the royal family on the balcony, or riding in a carriage during the ceremony. The source noted that Prince William and Kate Middleton will not be available to meet Meghan and Harry’s baby girl, as they will be in Wales on Saturday, at an engagement at Cardiff Castle. It's unclear whether or not they will meet her at some point during the four-day celebration. The meeting will likely happen on Lilibet's first birthday, Saturday, with a source telling ET that the 96-year-old monarch will not attend the Epsom Derby on Saturday, which leaves time for her to meet her great-granddaughter.

Meghan and Harry remain behind the scenes at Platinum Jubilee (The Washington Post)

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were noticeably absent from Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee celebrations in London.

Harry was in Britain last year for the funeral of his grandfather Prince Philip. But the queen stripped Andrew of his honorary military titles in January and is now herself colonel of the regiment, which brings the title full circle. Meghan visited Uvalde, Tex., last month to pay respects to victims of the school shooting there. Nor was he in the royal carriages, which included his younger brother Edward. Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan were photographed at the Major General’s Office, Horse Guards Parade earlier. In the end, it was a no — at least for Thursday’s big event, the “Trooping the Color” military parade.
