'Disrupter-in-chief' breaks new ground with attacks on leading ... (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)

In a rally for the Republican challenger to Rep. Liz Cheney, Donald Trump took aim at two of the leading Republican families in modern history.

This is not Mr. Trump’s style, which is why he didn’t join former Presidents Clinton, Barack Obama, and George W. Bush in a joint video statement of bipartisan support for Mr. Biden at the time of his inauguration. He’s more comfortable, and more congenial to his supporters, as Leo Durocher (the actual quote from 1946 is “The nice guys are all over there, in seventh place“) or, to more contemporary ears, the rock band Green Day (who sang in 1999, “Your sympathy will get you left behind”). He employed his personal style to win the presidency and he is using it to remain — sometimes eclipsing the sitting president — the most prominent figure on the American political scene. Ty Cobb did not become a baseball great by being solicitous of the feelings of teammates and, once established as a sporting immortal, did not suddenly become personable. George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton were bitter 1992 rivals, but George W. Bush liked to say Mr. Clinton had become the 41st president’s favorite son. Mr. Trump is not, in a phrase from the Bush world, clubbable. Plus five years as Texas land commissioner, a powerful position held by George P. Bush, who though he did not receive Mr. Trump’s endorsement for attorney general of Texas (and failed to win last month’s primary) has spoken approvingly of Mr. Trump’s brand of politics. And even back in the old days when we had real segregationists like Eastland and Thurmond and all those guys … at least we’d end up eating lunch together”). The party began to move away from its racist past in 1948, when Mayor Hubert H. Humphrey of Minneapolis (“The time has arrived in America for the Democratic Party to get out of the shadow of states’ rights and to walk forthrightly into the bright sunshine of human rights”) didn’t criticize by name any of the segregationists in the Democratic National Convention audience. Harry Truman, who two weeks later desegregated the armed forces, didn’t criticize Woodrow Wilson, who by any measure harbored racist sentiments. Maybe you were barbecuing burgers and dogs. Perhaps you were distracted by holiday-weekend activities.

Opinion | Trump Is Finally Boring (POLITICO Magazine)

Donald Trump recently sent out a press release linking to a half-baked conspiracy theory about the outcome of the Georgia Republican primaries, ...

The fact is that Trump at his most dull still may be more interesting than a conventional Republican at his or her most entertaining. It’s an adage that’s traditionally been best suited to Southern Gothic novelists, though, rather than American politicians, who usually benefit from putting an accent on the future. Yet you could have heard the same lines at any Trump rally at any place on any occasion over the last several years. There’s no danger that Trump will ever be similarly laundered into the mainstream, or graduate into a beloved or respected elder statesman as almost all American presidents do at some point. Much of his focus is backward looking. I was wrong then, and I may well be wrong again.

Two words explain why Trump won't run in 2024 (The Hill)

But between the lines in Stone’s message, I read, “fear.” Why else would Trump have excessively teased his run and still “not made a decision”? Of course, the “Big Tease” has been an effective fundraising platform, banking more than $100 million for Trump’s PACs while solidifying his duel status as king of the GOP and MAGA world. Thus, King Trump wants and believes he deserves the 2024 crown delivered to his Mar-a-Lago palace on a blue satin pillow. We invite you to join the discussion on Facebook and Twitter. Meanwhile, a fighting bench is forming with numerous former and current officeholders unlikely to bow to Trump’s crowning demands. Cleveland, a Democrat, was first elected in 1884 after winning the popular vote and Electoral College. In his 1888 reelection defeat, Cleveland lost the Electoral College but still won the popular vote. If he chooses to, I don’t think he could be stopped for the nomination, and I would be for him. Furthermore, Trump’s fear of running and losing reelection a second time is not assuaged by presidential history. Then, during a television appearance on Dec. 3, 2020, Mary explained, “It’s impossible for Trump to believe that he lost the election.” But there is a striking political difference between Trump and Cleveland’s win-loss record. Democrats see a constitutional crisis in the making.” Trump’s repudiation in Georgia has Republicans speculating about his declining kingmaking powers, openly defying him as he loses his “vise-like grip on the party” and potentially endangering his front-runner status. Moreover, during a second reelection campaign, the former president would be hard-pressed to use the same predictive excuse first heralded in a May 25, 2020, Politico headline: “Trump sees a ‘rigged election’ ahead.

Trump's pick of Blake Masters is expected to shake up Arizona's five-way Republican Senate primary race.

Trump has continued to make baseless and false claims that the Arizona results were "rigged and stolen." "Soon we will have a young, fearless, dynamic America First coalition in the U.S. Senate. And that is thanks to Donald Trump.” "Blake is Strong on Border Security, in particular, the disastrous Southern Border where people are pouring into the U.S. by the millions, and destroying our Country," Trump said in a written statement issued by his Save America political-action committee. Last month in Georgia's primaries, voters rejected three high-profile Trump endorsements. “As a supporter of President Trump’s policies, I respect his right to endorse a candidate in Arizona’s U.S. Senate race, but Arizona voters will pick our next Senator, not anyone else. "Blake will fight for our totally under-siege Second Amendment, and WIN!" "Trump sabotaged Republicans’ efforts to recruit Doug Ducey into the race, and ever since he’s bullied the remaining candidates into embracing his toxic election lies and an agenda that is totally out of step with the state," the DSCC said in a statement. "Brnovich intends to fight and win this Primary Election and we look forward to working with President Trump to defeat Mark Kelly this fall," he said, adding that Brnovich still has "multiple ongoing investigations regarding the integrity of the 2020 election." "He is the current Arizona Attorney General, and while he understands what took place in the 2020 Presidential Election, and that it was Rigged and Stolen, he only views it as something he would like not to see happen again."

Trump endorsed Masters after souring on two rivals, state Attorney General Mark Brnovich and businessman Jim Lamon.

- Trump thought Lamon, who pushed his business bonafides, talked about himself too much, one of the sources said. (Lamon was not mentioned in the endorsement). - Meanwhile, Trump felt Brnovich was "weak" on claims of 2020 election fraud as attorney general — and made those feelings known in his endorsement message, calling him "such a disappointment." - Masters is also the candidate people closest to Trump have been pushing the most, with many quick to point out the similarities between Masters and Vance. - Trump initially thought Masters wasn't great on TV but believes he's improved immensely in his public speaking and appreciates the way he's run his campaign so far. Former Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro charged with contempt of ... (The Washington Post)

Navarro, like former Trump adviser Stephen Bannon, was indicted after refusing to comply with a Jan. 6 committee subpoena.

Lawmakers and investigators on the committee have come to view Meadows as a central figure in Trump’s months-long bid to overturn the results of the election and have previously expressed concern that Garland’s delay could hamstring their work. Moss also told Navarro to amend his lawsuit to make clear the basis for any other claims, such as those challenging the legitimacy of the House select committee or the authority of Biden to waive executive privilege invoked by his predecessor. In 2008, for example, the department rebuffed charges against President George W. Bush’s chief of staff, Joshua Bolten, and former White House counsel Harriet Miers, who had resisted subpoenas over the controversial forced resignations of U.S. attorneys during the pair’s tenure. “As demonstrated in this brief, the executive privilege invoked by President Trump is not mine or Joe Biden’s to waive,” Navarro repeated in the suit. Prosecutors alleged that Navarro did not communicate at all with the committee after receiving the subpoena. Navarro, formerly an adviser to the president on various trade and manufacturing policies, has been a private citizen since departing the White House on Jan. 20, 2021. Navarro, 72, is charged with one contempt count involving his refusal to appear for a deposition and another involving his refusal to produce documents to the committee, according to a seven-page indictment. Legal analysts said Congress could sue to try to effect that result, hoping a judge would hold Navarro in civil contempt and jail him until he cooperated. Navarro said in his lawsuit against Pelosi and the committee that he was directed to testify before a grand jury June 2 and present “[a]ll documents relating to the subpoena dated February 9, 2022” that he received from the committee, “including but not limited to any communications with [former president] Trump and/or his counsel or representative.” In a letter accompanying the original Navarro subpoena, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-Miss.), chairman of the select committee, cited news reports that the former Trump trade adviser “worked with Steve Bannon and others to develop and implement a plan to delay Congress’s certification of, and ultimately change the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.” Navarro, who filed the lawsuit on his own without a lawyer, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Both Navarro and Bannon were indicted by a grand jury in Washington — a rare move by the Justice Department to escalate the consequences of a dispute involving Congress by bringing criminal charges.

Navarro said he was arrested at a DC-area airport Friday on his way to Nashville.

He ultimately closed off communication with the committee and referred all questions regarding his cooperation to Trump and his attorneys. "You bet your a** that I will lead the charge," Navarro said. "Hit them with subpoenas," Navarro declared. Navarro revealed Monday that he had been subpoenaed by federal prosecutors who were seeking documents related to his decision. Navarro had claimed that he was unable to cooperate because former President Donald Trump had asserted executive privilege in the matter. The Justice Department has yet to act on two other Trump allies referred by the House for prosecution: former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and ex-White House aide Dan Scavino. The House panel has also recommended contempt charges for Dan Scavino, a former deputy chief of staff to Mr Trump, and Mark Meadows, who was White House chief of staff.

Pence Staff Feared for His Safety Amid Trump's Pressure Campaign ... (The New York Times)

New details flesh out how the pressure campaign by Donald J. Trump and his allies to block certification of the 2020 election left the vice president's ...

At about 1 p.m., Mr. Pence released a memo making clear that he disagreed with the president about his power to intervene in the certification. Mr. Giebels rushed Mr. Pence from the Senate chamber and took him to an underground loading dock. Mr. Trump tweeted on the morning of Jan. 5 that Mr. Pence could reject electors. Mr. Trump also persisted, soon trying more direct means of pressuring Mr. Pence. On Jan. 4, 2021, he summoned the vice president to meet with John Eastman, the lawyer who had been especially influential in pressing the case that the vice president could intervene. The suit was asserting precisely what Mr. Pence’s aides argued he did not have the power to do. After Mr. Pence was hustled to safety, Mark Meadows, the White House chief of staff, is reported to have told colleagues that Mr. Trump said that perhaps Mr. Pence should have been hanged. Mr. Short objected to Ms. Ward’s support of the suit. Ms. Ward had joined a suit filed by Representative Louie Gohmert, Republican of Texas, that asked a court to say that Mr. Pence could decide whether to accept or reject slates of electors from states during the Electoral College certification. At the end of December, Mr. Pence traveled to Vail, Colo., for a family vacation. But after days of intensifying pressure from Mr. Trump on Mr. Pence to take the extraordinary step of intervening in the certification of the Electoral College count to forestall Mr. Trump’s defeat, Mr. Short seemed to have good reason for concern. Soon, Mr. Pence asked his general counsel, Greg Jacob, to write a memo explaining what his powers were during the certification. Mr. Trump grew agitated as his options closed, and it became clear that he was failing in his last-ditch effort to muscle his previously compliant vice president into unilaterally rejecting the voting outcomes in key states.
