Injury Report: Payton, Porter, and Iguodala All Available (Sports Illustrated)

The Golden State Warriors will have Gary Payton II, Otto Porter Jr., and Andre Iguodala available for Game 1 of the NBA Finals.

Game 1 between the Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics is set to tip-off at 6:00 PST in San Francisco, where the Warriors have handled business all postseason long. The three players worked hard to make themselves available for the NBA Finals, and with tip-off just hours away, they have officially been listed as available. With the exception of James Wiseman, the Golden State Warriors will finally have an opportunity to have their entire roster available for the NBA Finals. It is still relatively unclear what restrictions are in place for the team's players who are fresh off injury, but three key players will indeed be available for the beginning of the Finals. Shortly before Game 1, head coach Steve Kerr announced that Gary Payton II, Otto Porter Jr., and Andre Iguodala are all available to contribute.

Golden State's reserves all upgraded from 'questionable', while a pair of Celtics battling their own maladies will start for Boston.

On the Celtics side, both Marcus Smart and Robert Williams III were questionable … until Thursday’s starting lineup announcement, which put both on the floor for the opening tip. Smart put up a crucial 18 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals against zero turnovers in 30 minutes; Williams dropped eight points, six rebounds, a steal and four blocks in 24 minutes of action. The team announced pregame that Gary Payton II, Andre Iguodala and Otto Porter Jr. were each upgraded from “questionable” on Wednesday to “available to play” in Thursday’s series opener, which the Celtics won, 120-108.

Andre Iguodala's Veteran Presence Essential to Finals Run | SLAM (SLAM Online)

Andre Iguodala has been sidelined with a neck injury but he's made sure to mentor the Warriors' rookies and playoff star Jordan Poole.

His institutional knowledge of Golden State’s playstyle and culture has helped him stay in the League just as much as his quick hands, length, and athleticism. Having him in their collective ear will only make playing on the biggest stage of basketball even more when it matters the most. But Iggy’s injury woes haven’t prevented him from playing a vital role for the Warriors as a player-assistant coach while in street clothes. I’m guilty of it, just being in the Finals so many times where I feel nothing. As of Wednesday, Iggy has been ruled questionable for Game 1 of the FInals along with Gary Payton II. The injury has sidelined Iguodala for 13 of their last 16 playoff games, including 12 straight, while he recovers.

Kerr noted that the nature of Payton’s injury allowed him to maintain his conditioning throughout his recovery. Boston’s 120-108 victory dropped Golden State’s win-loss record in Game 1s to 21-3 during Kerr’s tenure. “He’s kind of progressed further out over the last few days. If Payton can return later in this series, he would provide a boost to Golden State’s depth and defense. He finished the game 4 of 5 from behind the arc for 12 points. Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody are surrounded by veterans with NBA Finals experience. Not all 19-year-olds are blessed with that environment.

But the one-time NBA Finals MVP is considered one of the most critical pieces of the Warriors for a good reason. Kuminga and Moody might think that a trip to the NBA Finals is as easy as walking in the park. Iggy was in his 11th year in the league and on his third team. His first NBA Finals trip was in 2015 at 31-years-old. Iguodala knows that not all 19-year-olds get to the NBA Finals. But, to a certain extent, they are forced to mature quickly — which is not necessarily an easy task. 19-year-olds Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody are in the NBA Finals in their first season as pros.

If he's not available on the court, he's been amazing at just being a voice, a presence for the young guys, not just in the locker room, during practice, but obviously you've seen him up and demonstrative during games on the sidelines. Warriors vs. Celtics Game 1 injuries: Porter, Payton, Iguodala cleared (Golden State of Mind)

The Golden State Warriors have cleared Otto Porter Jr., Andre Iguodala, and Gary Payton II to play in Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics.

Steve Kerr wouldn’t comment on if any of the three would play, just that they would be available. Payton, who has been out since fracturing his elbow in Game 2 of the semifinals against the Memphis Grizzlies, is one of the league’s elite on-ball defenders, and can be disruptive whether put on guards like Marcus Smart, or larger players like Jayson Tatum. The Golden State Warriors will be the healthiest they’ve been all year for the start of the NBA Finals. Prior to Thursday’s Game 1 against the Boston Celtics, the Warriors announced that three key members of the bench, who have been dealing with injuries, will be cleared to play.

What Otto Porter Jr., Andre Iguodala provided in Game 1 Warriors ... (NBC Sports Bay Area)

Dalton Johnson breaks down the performances of Otto Porter Jr. and Andre Iguodala in the Warriors' Game 1 loss to the Celtics.

Both had positives stretches, with a lot of room for improvement starting Sunday night in a gigantic Game 2 for the Warriors. Iguodala also made his first and only 3-point attempt with six seconds left in the third quarter to give the Warriors a 92-78 lead. It's so hard to ask of anything from the left-hander, and the Warriors have been extremely mum on how much he can actually shoot the ball. The 38-year-old even showed some bounce and got up for an easy dunk in the fourth quarter. The Warriors clearly need Porter's shot-making ability, rebounding and basketball IQ. Now they need him, and a handful of others, to be on the same page defensively. In over 24 minutes off the bench, Porter scored 12 points while going 4-for-5 from the field, adding four rebounds and two steals.
