Stephon Tuitt Replacement Options: Chris Wormley, Larry Ogunjobi? (Steelers Now)

Stephon Tuitt's retirement forces Omar Khan's hand to make a move. But with more salary cap space, does that mean a defensive line free agent?

The Steelers should not sit on the open cap space created by Tuitt’s retirement and find a way to further build out the roster with players who can help with depth. That would make Ogunjobi an favorite of an option for the Steelers to consider. That’s a lot of money for the team’s new general manager Omar Khan to use to find an addition to the line who could replace Tuitt. Not only will Tuitt’s presence on the field be a big hole to fill, but so will his salary cap hit. While Heyward is still an elite player on a defense with other players of the same caliber in T.J. Watt and Minkah Fitzpatrick, losing Tuitt creates a big vacancy. Tuitt missed the entire 2021 season after the passing of his brother and hadn’t shown up to Steelers OTAs without any significant statements from Mike Tomlin or Steelers management on his status.

They must like Adams because they did not trade up to get Jordan Davis, the consensus No. 1 defensive lineman in the draft. DeCastro’s unexpected departure left the Steelers in a bind. They did not sign a defensive lineman in free agency other than re-signing Montravius Adams for $5 million over two years.

On Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers released a statement from defensive lineman Stephon Tuitt that he is planning to retire from the NFL after eight seasons. Pittsburgh should be able to use that extra cash to reach out to a veteran defensive lineman in free agency to help replace Tuitt and still have money left to spend. There’s no shame in saying Tuitt had one of the worst contracts on the team.

Who can step up for Tuitt, and whom might the Steelers sign? Plus, Mason Rudolph's future, Kenny Pickett's swagger and Matt Canada's scheme.

I warn you to temper your enthusiasm because a lot of what we are seeing now is the installation of the playbook. But I can guarantee you that Tomlin, Austin and Flores will lock themselves in a room Mondays and Tuesdays during the week to hash out a game plan. defensive drills, the players on defense wear them to distinguish what side of the ball they are on. Mark, is it too early to get a sense of what Teryl Austin’s influence in the D will be? I love Ben Roethlisberger, but it was evident he was able to dictate a lot of plays in the offense. I guess that is a nice way to say he dictated it, but not in a bad way. He needs to work on the playbook if he is going to have any chance to compete at training camp. How much different will the offense be now that Matt Canada is free to call the game as he sees it? With the retirement of Tuitt, what are the cap implications of a retirement vs. Does he have the natural leadership ability to get the respect of the vets in his first season, or do you think he needs to grow into it with time? Now, they can cut a player at any time with a post-June 1 designation and it accomplishes the same thing. After the team held on to Tuitt — and former general manager Kevin Colbert said they were expecting Tuitt to be back and went about their offseason accordingly — surely it was a surprise when Tuitt announced his retirement on Wednesday, citing a greater calling after the death of his brother and his recent graduation from Notre Dame.

Steelers Tried to Get Stephon Tuitt Back (Sports Illustrated)

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers hoped Stephon Tuitt returned for the 2022 season, but they also understood there was a chance he wasn't playing again.

"He had a lot of things going on with himself and his family so we knew what he was taking care of. "As an athlete, as a football player, this kind of becomes our safe haven from a lot of things outside this locker room and we just wanted to get him around the guys so that he could lean on them when he was going through some of those tough times," Alualu said. I'm definitely going to miss him, I know the guys are going to miss him."

Pittsburgh will have to move on without Tuitt as Tuitt moves on to life’s work. Chris Wormley, Isaiahh Loudermilk and Demarvin Leal will compete for playing time on the defensive line.

Not having that opportunity to learn from him sucks, but at the same time it gives me an opportunity to learn stuff and have more of a relationship with the older guys. The Steelers like his size and athleticism and see future starter traits in him. He finished his career with 34 ½ sacks, including a career-high 11 in his final season in 2020. A lot of it is mental stuff, little details here and there. They have a young and monstrous run-stopper in Loudermilk, who is oozing with potential. What didn’t translate for me last year was the pass rush part of it.

“We got to watch our kids become friends, and our wives are pretty close. He thinks the best thing for him and his family is to go through retirement. Tuitt’s final season with the Steelers turned out to be his best. That is definitely going to be missed.” Tuitt then returned to Notre Dame, where he once starred on the defensive line, to complete his bachelor of arts degree in psychology. “We wanted to get him around the guys that he can lean on.” We are able to do a lot of special things. Obviously, we didn’t win a Super Bowl together, but we created a lot of havoc, and we had fun doing it. “I can’t be mad at a guy for not wanting to come back. “I think we can all agree what he’s been through is not easy. “He said it was 50-50, going both ways,” Heyward said. Heyward and Tuitt both have three young children, so that was a frequent topic of conversation. Unlike last offseason, when Alualu had agreed to terms with the Jaguars and was all set to leave Pittsburgh before Heyward and others recruited him back, Tuitt’s situation is much more personal than professional. Selfishly, both Alualu and defensive linemate Cam Heyward wanted to have Tuitt back with their unit in 2022.
