EA Sports announced that legendary coach and commentator John Madden would be on the cover of Madden 23.

That began a four-year process during which the minds at EA Sports created a true-to-life football simulation, complete with plays drawn from NFL playbooks. The former coach was first approached by EA Sports back in 1984 about being part of a football simulation, but Madden insisted that the game be as realistic as possible. The Hall of Fame coach and commentator helped introduce the game of football to millions of new fans through the Madden video game series.

Many current NFL players say Madden was part of their upbringing -- Detroit Lions defensive back Jeff Okudah told ESPN in 2020 that he learned football by playing Madden -- and that was always a prideful point for the game's namesake.

Madden 23's big new feature is called FieldSense (GamesRadar+)

EA has announced the first set of Madden NFL 23 gameplay details, and this year's Gridiron sim is heavily based on a new mechanic called FieldSense.

“Coach stands for authentic eleven-vs-eleven football,” says senior producer Mike Maher. “That caused us to go back and look at what inspired him, and EA, to partner originally. According to EA, 360-degree cuts offer extra control to running backs, while the option to ‘Hit Everything’ on defense triggers more turnovers and multi-player pile-ups. Developed in response to feedback from fans, the new gameplay system introduces four specific elements to Madden 23.

Madden 23 preview: FieldSense, dynamic gameday, and franchise ... (GamesRadar+)

Even annual sports games need a hook. 'It's a bit better than 12 months ago' isn't sufficient to entice potential buyers into shedding their cash, ...

"There are people on the team here who, until quite recently, used to go to Coach's house annually to review the game," says Maher. "There is a deep connection [among the team] to him as a person. EA Tiburon has built on that not only with the new gameplay mechanics but also a fresh commitment to realism starting with the pre-match build-up, and ending after the post-match handshakes. "The converse of that 'tackle battle' is true as a defender," says Maher. "You can win that battle and pancake or flatten the running back on or behind the line." For the community element that constantly badgers EA to start from scratch, that's likely to trigger a group sigh. "Building and refining top fan requests including staff management, weekly game-planning and scouting, Madden 23 brings more authenticity and realism with new free agency and contract tools and improved trade logic represents the value of star players more accurately for fair and more realistic offers," it says. We'll have more on those other modes between now and the Madden 23 release date of August 19. Some play Ultimate Team, some play Face of the Franchise. Some play competitive online only. As for the running game, FieldSense's aim is to eliminate what Maher calls "tanker turns". Immediate changes of direction are now possible by holding L2/LT and flicking the stick in the direction you want to go. Hitting the pile to assist tackles already in progress further helps to halt a determined ball carrier, and you can blow up blocks and force turnovers with standup tackles. "And if you're someone who just wants to hit the line over and over again, there's a new 'tackle battle' mechanic which enables you to [deliberately] target a single character. There's a new meter to judge power, and an aiming reticle to affect accuracy, which when combined enable you to lead receivers and drop in back-shoulder throws. Way ahead of you, McNulty. "There've been extensive improvements to both run blocking and line play," promises Maher when I ask that exact question.

Madden NFL 23 launches Aug. 19, 2022, for PS5 and Xbox Series X, with versions for PS4, Xbox One, and PC as well. The newest consoles get a game with ...

It gives our defenders another way to think about stopping the offense and breaking up a pass, and not being so reliant on interceptions as a means to get off the field.” As a single-player experience, Madden NFL 23 felt like a breath of fresh air, liberating my players from background calculations and other thumb-on-the-scale gimmicks. The most beautiful example of this new pass-targeting visual aid came in a game where I took the Los Angeles Chargers against their stadium landlords, the Los Angeles Rams. Justin Herbert lofted a 12-yard square out to Keenan Allan that I deliberately threw long and high. It’s best illustrated when a lineman stands up a running back at the line of scrimmage and slows him long enough for a defensive back to swoop in finish him off from the side. Ramsey is probably the best cornerback in the NFL, and in nine out of 10 Maddens before this, it would have been an interception. It has a blue area — meaning completion — that widens or narrows based on the quarterback’s attributes as well as the context of the play (rolling out, throwing across his body, etc.). It sounds like a lot to process, but for most passes from the pocket I didn’t have to mind the meter; still, with a scrambling thrower extending a broken play, the option is there to bullseye any receiver if you’re good (or lucky) enough. And, as I saw in a hands-on demonstration, sometimes the AI cornerback hits a grappled runner from behind and pushes him forward for an extra yard. In a one-on-one stand-up tackle, players will see an A/X button-mash prompt to either fend off the tackle or finish it, somewhat like in Tecmo Super Bowl. Madden NFL 23’s stand-up tackle breakout is more contextualized and dependent on player attribute ratings, but it fulfills the designers’ goal of giving players greater agency over a play’s outcome. To be fair, run-blocking improvements starting in Madden NFL 21 greatly helped players avoid the premature end to a well-called, well-designed play. “I’m sure a lot of you in the room have used [that term]. The outcome of the play feels like it’s almost predetermined. That changes in Madden NFL 23, said McHardy, a senior producer over the core gameplay team. In all my glamour shots of my created Madden NFL running back, only one player is tackling him.

'Madden 23' improves hits, passing, and rushing with FieldSense ... (Inverse)

Whether you're a hall-of-famer or a redshirt freshman, 'Madden 23's new FieldSense features will give you more control over every aspect of the game.

This gives you the opportunity to bob and weave the enemy backline and score more points. Previous Madden games haven’t given you much control of your player's movements, but the Three-Sixty Cuts feature in Madden 23 looks to give you an extra edge. And a lot of that comes down to FieldSense, a suite of four new features intended to give players more control over every aspect of the game. A passing meter will help your QB a better pass — if you manage to time right. It takes some getting used to, but once you understand the basics it will allow you to throw fakeout passes and make more precise plays. The team at EA has implemented some fundamental changes to the game’s core mechanics, like better coverage on the field, simplified playbooks, and a reworked franchise mode.

How Madden NFL 23 Improves The Series' Gameplay, Franchise ... (Game Informer)

We spent a full day at EA Orlando's offices to learn how this year's game evolves the franchise.

If Madden NFL 23 can deliver on the myriad promises and potential of this year's game, this could very well be the bounceback entry the series sorely needs. This approach lets you get into the NFL action quicker and gives you more control over the NFL situation you enter as you begin the mode. Not unlike a team going pushing down the field to try for a last-second score with its two-minute offense, Madden NFL 23 feels like a critical drive for the trajectory of the long-running football franchise. While The Yard continues to give players a more backyard, arcade-focused football experience, Madden Ultimate Team and Face of the Franchise bring the most significant changes. This year's career mode is called The League. The story foregoes the high school and college portions of past years, instead opting to tell your story as an established NFL player entering the free agency market. Top that off with better user interface and scouting hub improvements, and scouting joins the rest of the Franchise package as one of the most promising parts of Madden NFL 23. This mechanic lets you gamble on the accuracy of your throw and your receiver's ability for the potential of a pass that isn't remotely defendable by the players on the other side of the ball. These new views and tools are helpful, but you must be more strategic in your interactions, as you can only have five active negotiations in the early stages. During my time with the game, I tried to test out the limits of the skill-based passing; I pulled the left trigger to allow me to move the reticle outside of the targeting area, aimed further downfield and threw a high lob pass with the hopes of giving my receiver enough time to get under it. Running up the middle with my running back afforded me more control over how I could cut through the lanes presented by my blockers, while putting the ball in the hands of Lamar Jackson let me mess around with both the skill-based passing and the 360° cuts mechanics. Coming off a down year that felt indicative of the stagnation that so many longtime players decry when looking at the Madden NFL series, EA Sports has a lot to prove. However, that doesn't mean EA Sports isn't implementing multiple changes in hopes of making Madden NFL 23 transcend the criticism of the game feeling like "just a roster update."
