Aaron Donald wants to win another Super Bowl, but he's still considering retirement. "I don't need football to be fine."

If I was to play, it’s just to win another Super Bowl, but at the end of the day, it’s still a business and it got to make sense to me and my family.” The Rams will be in big trouble if Donald doesn’t return, leaving a gaping hole in the middle of their defensive line. I said ‘I’m going to play eight years and I’m going to probably be done playing football.’ But winning a Super Bowl you get kind of a little addicted to it. He came into the NFL expecting to play eight years and then be done. I don’t want to play football if I can’t win anyway, so I feel like if I got a real opportunity to win another Super Bowl, then it makes sense to play. We’ve got to handle the business side of things, and if that wasn’t to get handled then, you know, ‘it is what it is’ type of situation.

If I was to play, it’s just to win another Super Bowl, but at the end of the day, it’s still a business and it got to make sense to me and my family. They were publicized ahead of the event by NBC's Rodney Harrison, and that led many to believe that he would step away from the game if Los Angeles won the game. Aaron Donald will "probably" play again in 2022 but explained his thought process amid speculation around his future.

“I was blessed to play this game, to make the money I made. I ain’t going to lie. “That’s what you’ve got to see. Prior to Super Bowl LVI, it was suggested Donald could retire if he finally got his hands on a championship ring. Donald’s 2022 status has therefore been the subject of some speculation, with his victory parade suggestion the Rams could “run it back” not followed by progress in terms of a new contract. That’s just what I’ve been saying.

Rams DT Aaron Donald remains unsure if he will play in 2022 after winning Super Bowl LVI, but is leaving the door open for a return.

If I was to play, it's just to win another Super Bowl, but at the end of the day, it's still a business and it got to make sense to me and my family." It's likely going to cost the Rams north of $30 million per year to get Donald to come back on a term shorter than his most recent extension signed in 2018 for six years. "Winning a Super Bowl, you get kind of a little addicted to it," Donald told Marshall, former cornerback Adam Jones and former running back LeSean McCoy. "I ain't going to lie. "It ain't about the money, but it's a business at the end of the day," Donald said. I said I'm going to play eight years, and I'm going to probably be done playing football." Yes, he's already making the most per year at his position, but it's not by a wide margin, and there are five edge rushers making more than one of the best defensive players to ever play, regardless of position.

He just wants to posture like he isn’t because as he said, “This is a business.” Donald said he wouldn’t play for the Rams, or any team, again unless he felt they were good enough to win a championship. But the Rams seem to have an even clearer path to winning the NFC than they did last season. Donald does not seem to be at peace with his current contract and also mentioned that he’s held out twice before for more money from the Rams organization before joining the team, and there are signs pointing towards another holdout in 2022 coming off of his first Super Bowl championship. If we were going on the last 17 Super Bowls alone, we’d say that the odds of repeating are close to zero. Donald didn’t say he should be making as much as quarterbacks, but made it clear that there should be a $22 million difference between someone like T.J. Watt and someone like Aaron Rodgers.

Which 2010s All-Decade NFL Players Will Repeat in the '20s? (Sports Illustrated)

Plus, Kevin Colbert's Hall of Fame odds, Trey Lance's potential, which rookie quarterbacks will start and more.

From the drive through the neighborhood to get to the lots, to all the tailgating going on in the lots, to the way the fans are on top of the action inside the stadium to what a great fall day feels like in Wisconsin, it’s football in a way that you usually can only get it on the college level. My feeling is the path to playing time is far less clear for Malik Willis and Sam Howell (we’ll get to why). It can be tough in that way, too, in that when you have a family, the volatile nature of the news can make things chaotic. And I think both teams will be competing for division titles, which lessen the likelihood that you’ll see the rookie out there. And in the end, football is my job. Sure, Jeremy. Normally, it starts for me when I wake up, at some point in the 5 a.m. hour, with a check of what I might’ve missed overnight, and maybe some texts resulting from that. Nick, I think the variance in opinion on Trey Lance is based much on the unknown—It’s really hard to project a guy who didn’t play, or throw, that much on the college level, and whose playing time as a rookie was scarce. The good news is Lance has a great head on his shoulders, is smart as a whip, has freakish athletic gifts, and will work his tail off to get where he needs to go. And presuming he does a new deal between now and the start of camp, it’s a good bet that Donald’s got a couple more years in him. • He was a part of the hiring committee that found a young Vikings defensive coordinator named Mike Tomlin to succeed Bill Cowher. And he built strong bonds and won titles with both coaches. Like those two, Chandler Jones, Khalil Mack, Von Miller and Bobby Wagner are in their 30s, and all four will be on new teams next year, each as a complementary piece in a bigger puzzle, which makes me think they won’t have the statistical firepower needed to get in when votes are counted in 2030. • A total of 26 players and two coaches have made it twice since the 1960s.

LA Rams defensive line: More issues than Aaron Donald's contract ... (Turf Show Times)

Barring injury to one of the starters, about 875 snaps over the season will need to be picked up to keep the first string fresh and pressure applied to opposing offenses. There are not a lot of NFL snaps amongst the returning backups. It will be fun to watch Bobby Wagner attack the ball with the luxury of lining up behind Rob. Injuries have always been a concern with Robinson, hopefully his weight loss and a new conditioning program can keep him on the field. Of the 10 players in the unit, only Donald, Bobby Brown, and Jonah Williams are signed past the upcoming season. The questions are about their professional experience, their best fit into the scheme, and the contractual futures of almost almost the whole unit (not just AD’s). Recently, much of the talk about the Los Angeles Rams has been centered on their defensive line.
