Iga Switaken recovered to beat Zheng Qinwen 6-7 (5), 6-0, 6-2 in her fourth-round match and the world No 1 has now won 32 in a row.
The effort of staying with the best player in the world for just a set, however, undid Zheng physically and she took a medical timeout for her leg early in the second set. During a brutal 87-minute opening set the 19-year-old Zheng went blow for blow with the world No 1, matching her physicality with her own immense defence, loading up the topspin on her heavy forehand and batting away break points with big serving. Swiatek has extended her run to 32 successive wins, which matches Justine Henin as the third longest sequence in the 21st century.
World No.1 Iga Swiatek was pushed all the way by Chinese teenager Zheng Qinwen in the fourth round of the French Open, but rallied for a three-set win.
Pegula broke Begu's serve in the fourth game of the second and third sets to take leads she never relinquished. A quarterfinalist in back-to-back years at the Australian Open in 2021 and 2022, Pegula's best prior result in Paris was a third round showing last year. Swiatek in fact won eight consecutive games from a set behind, and also navigated Zheng's last stand in the third; she saved two break points which would've seen the World No.74 level at 2-2. To reach her second Grand Slam quarterfinal of the season, and third in her career, Pegula dug deep. She trailed by a break for much of the first set, but after losing back-to-back, she never trailed again en route to securing the 2 hour, 8-minute win. Turning point: But Zheng's body betrayed her in the middle set; after losing the first three games, she took a medical timeout and emerged with her right upper leg wrapped, strapping she wore through the start of the third set.
Iga Swiatek dropped a set for the first time in more than a month but stayed on course for the French Open title by beating ailing teenager Zheng Qinwen.
In that moment when I say, I really wish I could be a man that I don’t have to suffer from this. “I wish I could be a man on court, but I cannot. “It’s a pity that I couldn’t give that what I wanted to give today.
Iga Swiatek's winning streak is now up to 32 matches. She will next face American Jessica Pegula in the Roland Garros quarterfinals.
“I was so nervous at the end but the crowd was amazing for me the whole match, the whole tournament. Pegula broke Begu's serve in the fourth game of the second and third sets to take leads she never relinquished. She didn't lose a set in her first three rounds to break new ground in 2022, but dropped serve twice against Begu to fall behind. It worked out so well in the end and gave me a huge confidence boost. She closed the match out on her serve when Zheng smacked a backhand deep. Świątek, who turns 21 Tuesday, will next face American Jessica Pegula, the No. 11 seed, in the quarterfinals.

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek overcame a huge scare to beat Qinwen Zheng in the French Open fourth round and take her winning run to 32 matches.
Swiatek sealed the bagel a game later, and the 2020 champion then continued to assert her dominance in the decider when once more breaking in the first game of the set. A tense finale to the first set followed, with Swiatek saving two break points in the 10th game before failing to convert another two set points when Zheng was serving to stay in it. Swiatek, who dropped just four games in her opening two matches before beating Danka Kovinic 6-3 7-5, was forced to save two break points in the opening game of the fourth-round match, and though Zheng dropped her opening serve she was able to break back in the fifth.
Holger Rune, a 19-year-old from Denmark, became the second teen man to make the French Open quarterfinals, upsetting No. 4 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.
The 12th-seeded Hurkacz was a semifinalist at Wimbledon last year. Later Monday, top women’s seed Iga Swiatek escaped China’s 74th-ranked Qinwen Zheng 6-7 (5), 6-0, 6-2 after Zheng took a medical timeout in the second set for a leg injury. Rune is also the first Danish man to make a French Open quarterfinal and the first to do it at any major since Jan Leschly at the 1967 U.S. Open.

Zheng took a medical time out at 3-0 down in the second set, having her back massaged on court before going to the locker room and coming back with her right thigh strapped. Swiatek moved 5-2 up in the breaker and it seemed Zheng’s resistance would finally end, only for the Chinese, nicknamed ‘Fire’ at her tennis academy in Spain, to go for her shots and win the remaining five points to take the set. It’s a tough tournament.

Sports Desk, May 30 (EFE).- Marin Cilic defeated world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 Monday night to advance to the French Open quarterfinals, ...
To qualify for his first semifinal at Roland Garros, Cilic must defeat Russian seventh seed Andrey Rublev, who advance earlier Monday after Italy’s Jannik Sinner retired in the third set of their contest. A month after undergoing surgery for a herniated disc, Medvedev, 26, was overwhelmed by the 23rd-ranked Cilic, who said afterward that it was “one of the best matches of my career from start to finish.” The 33-year-old Croatian needed just an hour and 45 minutes to dispatch the Russian and reach the final eight at a major tournament for the first time since 2018, when he made it to the quarterfinals in three of the four Grand Slams.
