Canada's Trudeau announces bill to cap sales, transfers and ... (CNN)

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday announced the introduction of a bill that would place a national freeze on handgun ownership across Canada.

Handguns were "the most serious weapon present in the majority of firearm-related violent crimes" between 2009 and 2020, making up 59% of those crimes, according to a Monday release Trudeau added that while most gun owners use their handguns safely and in accordance with the law, "we don't need assault style weapons that were designed to kill the largest number of people in the shortest amount of time." "Gun violence is a complex problem, but at the end of the day the math is really quite simple: The fewer the guns in our communities, the safer everyone will be," the Prime Minister said.

The report also finds the proportion of homicides involving a firearm rose to 37 percent in 2020 from 26 percent in 2013. The Statistics Canada report pointed to data gaps around gun violence, including whether the weapons were legally obtained. And gun violence accounted for less than three percent of all violent crime reported to police in 2020, according to Statistics Canada. Public opinion polling also sheds light on why the Liberals see gun control as a winning political issue. Biden visited Uvalde on Sunday and was met with demonstrators chanting at him to “do something” about gun violence. The tragedy prompted Trudeau to announce an immediate ban on 1,500 types of what his government calls “assault-style” weapons, including semi-automatic firearms designed to fire quickly.

Witnesses told the RCMP after the shooting that Wortman would disassemble the firearms and roll them up in his truck’s tonneau cover to smuggle them across the border. The government said Monday that it plans to introduce a mandatory buyback program that would offer compensation to owners of the banned firearms. “Today’s announcement fails to focus on the root cause of gun violence in our cities: illegal guns smuggled into Canada by criminal gangs,” Raquel Dancho, the Conservative public safety critic, said in a tweet. “We need only look south of the border to know that if we do not take action, firmly and rapidly, it gets worse and worse and more difficult to counter.” The “freeze” envisioned by the proposed legislation is not a ban because people who already own them could continue to possess and use them. Nearly 60 percent of firearm-related violent crimes involve handguns, according to the national statistics agency.

Canada plans complete freeze on handgun ownership (The Guardian)

It will be illegal to buy, sell, transfer or import handguns anywhere in country, Justin Trudeau says.

The bill would create a new “red flag” law allowing courts to require that people considered a danger to themselves or others surrender their firearms to police. Bill Blair, minister of emergency preparedness, said Canada was “very different from the United States”. “In Canada, gun ownership is a privilege, not a right,” he said. Trudeau said increased funding already helped border officials double the amount of smuggled guns confiscated at the US border. We cannot let the gun debate became so polarised that nothing gets done. We cannot let that happen in our country. Canada had already expanded background checks ahead of this total ban.
