James H. Harvey III, who retired from the Air Force as a lieutenant colonel, is set to lead the parade's return to D.C..

Finally, in 1993, the commander of the 332nd Fighter Group got the outfit listed as a 1949 winner, Harvey said. “It was a nice airplane,” Harvey said in an interview. “We were the only active unit in the United States Air Force flying P-47 aircraft.” “He was joking, of course.” On Monday, Harvey, now 98, is scheduled to be the grand marshal in Washington’s Memorial Day Parade, which returns in full to Constitution Avenue after a hiatus of two years because of the pandemic. “But I had some doubt in my mind.” And in January, the Air Force unveiled a plaque at Nellis Air Force Base that honors the men of the 332nd for their achievement at the competition: “This is one that we’re especially proud of. “We just really need shared events like this where we can all come together. It was May 1949, outside Las Vegas. He was 25. One F-82 crashed, killing the two men aboard. In 1949, the Air Force held the first gunnery competition at what was then Las Vegas Air Force Base, now Nellis Air Force Base. The best pilots in the Air Force were invited.

Memorial Day: We know the faces (Examiner Enterprise)

Memorial Day is about saluting those who fight the battle on the side that yearns for a freer, more peaceful world once the shooting stops.

Hundreds of thousands of American men and women have perished in giving us and others the opportunity for brighter tomorrows — from the Revolutionary War, the Union troops in the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict, Vietnam, Desert Storm, the War on Terror, and other missions. But, one stigma remained from the sixties — the conflicting concepts of “anti-war” or not. I once heard someone refer to war as “the Devil’s game.” I was proud to share this experience with them, even if I was one of the least. I learned most of the young men in my platoon were capable of great individual courage when the going got tough. I know it is the face of every recruit who I battled through hell and emerged triumphant with on boot camp graduation day. For the next couple of days, nonstop coverage of the tragedy dominated every television station. I weep when I see his face — because I know it is my face. I remember feeling a bit miffed they pre-empted my cartoon shows. We knew, or at least felt pretty sure, about how our fellow travelers in misery would respond when the only options were to stand head-on against the hurricane of unbearable challenge or to wilt. When President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, my second-grade teacher announced it to the class; I think the school might have even turned the clock back to the time of the shooting as a tribute. They learned mine in the first 15 minutes.

The crosses honor those who served America in the U.S. Armed Forces and have since passed away. The helmet on the monument belonged to the late Emilio Membrila.

However, in the late 1960s, the U.S. Congress designated the last Monday in May as Memorial Day. The purpose was to create a three-day holiday. In Greenlee County, they will do so at cemeteries in Duncan, Clifton, Morenci, and Sheldon. It may be worth a person’s time to realize just how many from Greenlee have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. It does not matter what the day is named. At the war’s end in 1865, a group of slaves disinterred the bodies and buried them in what was to them honorable and decent graves. For yet others, it is a day to visit the graves of family members or friends and remember them. The crosses honor those who served America in the U.S. Armed Forces and have since passed away.

The Code of Support Foundation (COSF), a U.S. non-profit organization that works to ensure members of the military, veterans, caregivers and surviving families receive the support they have earned through their service and sacrifice, calls on Americans to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day, and to "seek ways to honor our nation's heroes who died in service to our great nation." While it may seem natural to wish someone a "Happy Memorial Day," Americans remain split over whether it is an appropriate phrase to use to mark the national day of remembrance.

Almost 1000 U.S. Flights Canceled Over Memorial Day Weekend (Forbes)

Americans are traveling at nearly pre-pandemic levels this holiday weekend, but many found their trips disrupted by flight cancellations and delays.

The current cancellations come as Covid-19 infection and hospitalization rates rise in the United States and immunity from prior infection begins to wane. AAA is forecasting 3 million people will fly over the weekend, an increase of 25% over 2021, as holiday travel nears pre-pandemic levels. The current raft of flight cancellations comes after 2,616 U.S. flights were canceled January 1, a 61% increase over the previous New Year’s Day. The Federal Aviation Administration attributed these cancellations in part to the spread of the coronavirus’ omicron variant, requiring airlines to reduce staffing numbers. Delta Air Lines was the U.S.-based airline with the most cancellations over the weekend so far, with 413 cancellations and 790 delays, followed by Republic Airways with 137 delays and 522 cancellations and Cape Air with 67 cancellations and 84 delays, according to FlightAware. Some 565 flights arriving in or departing from the United States were canceled and 5,204 were delayed Saturday, while 394 were canceled and 2,746 were delayed Sunday, according to flight tracking platform FlightAware. A total of 959 U.S. flights have been canceled in the U.S. over the Memorial Day weekend so far, as bad weather conditions and Covid-19-related staffing shortages interfere with airline operations.

Flight cancellations pile up on busy Memorial Day weekend (wyomingnewsnow.tv)

Saturday's cancellations were due to bad weather and “air traffic control actions,” Atlanta-based Delta said.

Domestic airline fares for summer are averaging more than $400 for a round trip, 24% higher than this time in 2019, before the pandemic, and a robust 45% higher than a year ago, according to travel-data firm Hopper. Delta Air Lines canceled the most flights among major U.S. airlines, with more than 250 flights, or 9% of its operations, eliminated Saturday. One hundred and sixty Delta flights were canceled by Sunday evening, according to FlightAware. Delta announced on its website on Thursday that from July 1 to Aug. 7, it would reduce service by about 100 daily departures, primarily in parts of the U.S. and Latin America that Delta frequently serves. Saturday’s cancellations were due to bad weather and “air traffic control actions,” Atlanta-based Delta said in an email to The Associated Press, noting it’s trying to cancel flights at least 24 hours in advance of the Memorial Day weekend. About 1,460 flights had been canceled as of 7 p.m. EDT Sunday, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. That followed more than 2,300 cancellations Friday and another 1,500 on Saturday. ATLANTA (AP) — Hundreds of flights worldwide were canceled by Sunday evening, adding to the mounting number of scrubbed flights during the busy Memorial Day holiday weekend in the U.S.

A Memorial Day Remembrance - My Little Falls (My Little Falls)

May 30, 2022. A Memorial Day Remembrance. Photo by Dave Warner – At 3 pm on Memorial Day last year, Oscar Stivala participated in the Taps Across America ...

At 1:30 PM in Eastern Park in Little Falls, N.Y., on a Monday, May 30, a monument honoring Joseph Stanley Zawtocki, Jr. and Donnie Coffin along with the surviving veterans of the war in Vietnam will be commemorated. He did a tour, made it home, and still lives in the Falls. A bunch of kids were playing in the park and one, in particular, caught my eye. Please join us there and bring a sprig of lilac to place on a stone which to me will never be a stone but instead Stash’s smiling face. We must have walked by the Monument for the Unknown Soldier which stands behind a black, grated fence near the bandstand in the center of the park thousands of times; on our way to and from high school, to Vet’s Field, to Wednesday night concerts with Clarence Hotaling MCing, the Military Band performing, and the hot, buttered popcorn waiting to be devoured-a dime a bag. I hope he rests in the peace he deserves. The young man born in the month of May, and who, like the month, exuded so much light and warmth, was taken away from us by a war which wasn’t a war, a war which this nation has tried to forget. I returned the other day to the Furnace Street Park stomping grounds of Stash’s youth and mine. For many, the war raged on in the form of PTSD and/or a variety of medical problems which rendered them incapable of maintaining a job or sustaining a normal human relationship. But as many as 100,000 plus others, the statistics vary, unable to cope with the specter of failure which haunted them continually, suffering interminably from the physical pain and mental anguish, from the hopelessness which follows in the wake of believing that no one cares, from the disillusionment bred by the knowledge that you served your country but it was unwilling to serve you, from the daily-nightly reminders of 13 months of hell-reminders in the form of nightmares, flashbacks, stillborn babies and horribly deformed children-reminders which alcohol and drugs only temporarily erased-chose suicide as the final solution. In the process, those Johnnies who came marching home were doomed to a horror different and in a sense more cruel from what they experienced in those godforsaken tropics of Southeast Asia. The boys from “Nam” marched to no drummer-there were no parades or celebrations upon their return. Others, healthy and anxious to get back to business as usual, found the doors of employment slammed in their faces, faces stigmatized by the “drug-crazed ‘Nam veteran” image which seemed to follow them everywhere. In a sense, since the cycle repeats itself every year, May is a renaissance, a rebirth of those many things which make life worth living.

After living for two months in their tent city, the families were rousted by General Douglas MacArthur, who led troops with bayonets and tear gas to burn the Bonus camp down. What veterans' poems can teach us about healing on Memorial Day ... (Iowa Capital Dispatch)

On Memorial Day, "poems written by veterans that focus on honoring those who have died may give us a clue" to healing our deep divisions.

These words cannot be just lines or lists; they become, by being memorialized in a black stone, a “mirror,” the reader’s and thus society’s “reflection.” All on the bench are implicated; the names died for us, and, as a result, are us. The words are “names,” which “could be lines / of poems or a grocery list. For the visitor, the memorial becomes “an opened book,” a place where “A word loses its ability to conjure / trapped inside a black mirror.” We can also learn from Brock Jones, an Army veteran who served three tours of duty in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. He named his award-winning book “ Cenotaph,” the name for a tomb to honor those whose graves lie elsewhere. As a result, their image in the stone becomes a living memorial. Yet even with such a positive affirming metaphor, the speaker’s mind and heart are not fully at ease. “I go down the 58,022 names, / half-expecting to find / my own in letters like smoke. The holiday emerged from the Civil War as a celebration almost exclusively for veterans of the Union Army to remember those who had died. They address language’s inability to capture or express loss linked to memories of war. The concluding line relieves that worry – the names are not being erased. / He’s lost his right arm / inside the stone. It surfaces daily as communities such as New Orleans wrestle with whether or not to keep memorial statues honoring Confederate leaders like Robert E. Lee. Editor’s note: The Lee statue was removed in May 2017, but the debate over removing Confederate influence continues.

A Memorial Day tribute: Let's try to understand each other (The CT Mirror)

As the son of Navy fighter pilot, I was taught three things at a very early age: 1. To always thank a veteran when you saw him or her; 2.

The free will they fought to protect wasn’t meant for us to use as a tool of mutual destruction. This Memorial Day let’s again honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice by doing the important traditional things like parades, moments of silence, gathering at monuments, and many others. I often speak to people about this necessity of mutual understanding, and it is always received with aggressive agreement. Trust me, I know it’s a challenge these days not to react in ways that focus on our differences and drive us further to our corners. Memorial Day itself would be spent at the Bethlehem Memorial Day parade, an event that seemingly the entire town would attend decked out in red, white, and blue. My father, and other members of Post 146, would spend hours making sure veteran grave markers had American flags at the two cemeteries in town.

28 Best Memorial Day Outdoor Sales (2022): Grills, Camping, Hiking ... (WIRED)

It's the unofficial start of summer in the US, and it's a good time to score a deal on equipment for your next adventure.

If you're the type that needs to have good espresso on the trail, the Picopresso is our favorite portable espresso maker. Oru’s foldable kayaks are another possibility for those of us without the space to store and transport boats. This is the best thing I’ve tested this year. Strap your tent poles to the outside, and you’re ready to do a couple of weeks on the trail. If you plan to use it in a treeless area like the beach, be sure to pick up the poles, which are sold separately (though they seem to be out of stock everywhere at the moment). Add the Picopresso to your cart to see the discount at checkout. The Ranger is the smaller, more portable sibling to the Yukon, which we reviewed and liked. This one just adds the ability to recline for some night sky viewing. It burns wood and charcoal and packs down surprisingly small when you want to throw it in the trunk and hit the road. I think WIRED associate editor Adrienne So summed up this chair well when she said: “To be honest, it’s huge, heavy, takes up a lot of space, and is awkward to fold. Our favorite barefoot shoes are on sale at REI. The women’s sizing is also on sale for the same price. Whether you're a kayaker, climber, griller, or someone who just loves to sit on a camp chair and bask in the sun, these Memorial Day sales have something for you.

Memorial Day: Honor the fallen by caring for those they leave behind (Military Times)

Since being sworn in as a member of the United States House of Representatives, it has been a key passion and priority of mine to care for the families left behind by our fallen heroes and my fallen brothers and sisters. As a nation, I ask that we reflect upon those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, pay tribute to the fallen and never forget the families they left behind. This article is an Op-Ed and as such, the opinions expressed are those of the authors. Deeply emotional moments in my career involving the fallen and their families often play out in my memories as I reflect upon the true meaning of Memorial Day. Several years ago, when I was freshly promoted to brigadier general in the Air Force, one of my first duties was to serve as the accident investigation board president for an Air Force MC-12 reconnaissance aircraft that crashed on a mission over Afghanistan, horrifically killing all four crewmembers on board. As I reflect upon those our country has lost and those brave warriors whom I personally knew, I am reminded of the importance of not only honoring and remembering their service and sacrifice, but honoring them through action, by caring for the families they leave behind. Memorial Day is one of the most sacred days of the year for our nation — and for me personally.

We must invest in the care of service members and their families, from health care to housing to education. “On this Memorial Day, we must renew our commitment to not only honor those who have fallen in the fight for our freedom, but those who return from war. “As our nation reels from the devastating loss of civilian life in cities and towns across our country as a result of the epidemic of gun violence, we come together today to honor those brave Americans who elect to put their own lives on the line to keep other Americans safe as members of the Armed Services. Every year – but especially this year – we commemorate Memorial Day with solemnity and reflect together as a nation on the sanctity of every life, and the immense sacrifice of every life that’s been lost, from the battlefield to the schoolyard.
