Former Philadelphia 76ers big man Al Horford helps the Boston Celtics reach the NBA Finals with a win over the Miami Heat in Game 7.

Horford had five points and 13 rebounds as he was big on the defensive end. Horford was then traded back to the Celtics and he has now helped them reach the NBA Finals after they knocked off the Miami Heat 100-96 in Game 7 on the road in South Florida to reach their first Finals since 2008. Horford spent one tough season with the Sixers and he did not have a big impact there as Philadelphia struggled mightily to make it work with Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. The spacing was terrible and Horford was traded in the 2021 offseason to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Danny Green.

He finished with only three points on 1-of-8 shooting as the Celtics fell to the Heat, 111-103 in Game 6. Al Horford wasn't his usual self on Friday night against the Miami Heat and everybody noticed it.

"I'm just very grateful to be in this position with these guys." I look back and see where I was just day to day," he said. To me, it's special to be with them and help them be part of this," he said. The Thunder didn't play him much, hoping to cash in on a trade chip in the offseason. Celtics' Al Horford on making NBA Finals for first time in his career ... (masslive.com)

Al Horford, just days before turning 36, is headed to his first-ever trip to the NBA Finals.

I’ve been a part of a lot of great teams, a lot of great teammates, and I’m so proud of this group. Horford’s teammates showered him with praise as the sage veteran of this team. Years from now, his dunk on Giannis Antetokounmpo in the second round will live on in Celtics lore. It was only a season ago where Horford’s future was in doubt. Horford has played in 950 regular season games and 142 in the postseason. After the Celtics downed the Heat in Game 7 in Miami, Horford collapsed onto the ground in celebration.

As Celtics beat Heat to reach NBA Finals, Al Horford finally finds ... (The Athletic)

Al Horford was the hero of the Celtics' grueling seven game Conference Finals win over the Miami Heat.

“This is the biggest game of my career thus far, and I wanted to wear that armband to honor him and kind of share that moment in a way.” “I think in those moments, you don’t want to leave and feel like you could have done something more, so I think I came in with the mindset today that I was willing to do anything it took to win this game, however that looked,” Tatum said. Even after missing Game 1 because of the NBA’s COVID-19 protocols and losing his grandfather earlier this week, Horford was the defensive mastermind this team needed to survive Butler and the Heat’s resurgence. He’s going to show us what we missed, and he’s going to help us learn the game even more.” “So I remember that we had pictures for him and I picked him up from school and we had the cupcakes and we had all this stuff. In the middle of the fourth quarter, Tatum started hitting brilliant late-clock shots to maintain the lead. For me, it’s just special to be with them and be able to help them and be a part of this. He felt Butler was going for the shot, but he knew the Heat star could have just faked it and drove to the rim for another three-point play. “ I’ve been a part of a lot of great teams, a lot of great teammates, and I’m so proud of this group. The 35-year-old had returned to the team he once carried to this same moment years ago, looking for redemption. “On the phone, I would look at photos from a year ago, exactly what I was doing at the moment, and today my son actually graduated from kindergarten,” Horford said. A year later, in the biggest moment of his career, he found himself looking back at that period.

Short. Brown tipped the rebound and got credit for the board, but it was Horford who plucked it from the sky. More important, he became a rebounding force in the second half, grabbing 10 of his 14 rebounds after the break, including six in the fourth quarter. But in that familiar Horford way, he got it just right. He’s always right there where you need him to be in the end. The Celtics had built a 98-85 lead with 3:35 left, but a tough, proud Miami team refused to go quietly, ripping off an 11-0 run with the aid of some dubious Smart shots. But he scored just 8 points over the final two games. No player in NBA history has played more playoff games before reaching the Finals.

Former Gator great Al Horford to play in the NBA finals (Gators Wire)

The two-time national championship-winning Gator gets his first chance to shine on the biggest stage the NBA has to offer.

There are some who believe that the length and consistently good quality of Horford’s career give him a borderline Hall of Fame case, and he has an opportunity to bolster that case in this year’s NBA Finals. Regardless of whether it’s fair, Hall of Fame voters have shown time and time again that they love to reward championship winners for their former teams’ accomplishments. The Boston Celtics have advanced to the NBA Finals, meaning that former Gators center Al Horford will have a shot at a championship ring. In the series-clinching Game 7 against the Miami Heat, Horford lead the team in plus-minus with plus-10 despite only scoring 5 points.
