First tropical storm forms off Mexico's Pacific coast (ABC News)

Agatha, the first tropical storm of the 2022 hurricane season in the Pacific, has formed off Mexico's southern coast.

While the storm could pack winds as high as 100 mph (160 kph) at landfall, the center cited the risk of "potentially life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides" as its rains pound the mountainous terrain of Oaxaca. On Saturday evening, the center of the tropical storm was located about 175 miles (280 kilometers) southwest of Puerto Angel, with winds of 60 mph (95 kph). The storm was moving north-northwest at 5 mph (7 kph), but was expected to take a turn further northward.

Hurricane watch is in effect for Mexico as Tropical Storm Agatha ... (CNN)

Tropical Storm Agatha has formed to become the first storm of the 2022 eastern Pacific hurricane season.

"The surge may be accompanied by large and destructive waves." "Storm surge could produce coastal flooding near and to the east of where the center passes the coast in areas of onshore winds," the National Hurricane Center said. The storm is forecast to gradually strengthen, becoming a hurricane on Sunday before making landfall over the southern coast of Mexico on Monday. Mexico has issued a hurricane watch for the southern coast from Salina Cruz to Punta Maldonado.

A hurricane watch is in effect for the coast of Mexico from Salina Cruz to Punta Maldonado. For Agatha, there is the possibility that the system will cross over Mexico and into the Gulf of Mexico where it could intensify. Our first storm for 2022 will be “Alex.” But as hurricane season approaches in just days, every system is a reminder that preparing now for what could happen at some point over the summer months is never a bad idea. It’s a Pacific storm which uses a different list.

Agatha forecast to hit Mexico as Category 2 hurricane and enter Gulf (The Washington Post)

Tropical storm is predicted to rapidly intensify and could cross Mexico and become storm threat in Gulf of Mexico later next week.

“Life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides may occur,” the Hurricane Center wrote. The National Hurricane Center wrote that the storm is in “near ideal environmental conditions” for intensification; it is passing over very warm ocean waters, which help fuel storms, and will encounter a lack of hostile upper-level winds that could disrupt thunderstorm development. Conditions are expected to deteriorate in the hurricane-watch zone starting Sunday night, with the worst conditions on Monday, as the storm makes landfall.

The storm could pack winds as high as 100 mph at landfall, and forecasters warned of "potentially life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides."

By contrast, NOAA predicted the 2022 hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean will produce above-average activity, with a likely range of more than 20 named storms to occur. Earlier this week, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted a below-normal 2022 season for hurricanes in the eastern Pacific Ocean. On Saturday morning, the center of the tropical storm was located about 220 miles southwest of Puerto Angel, with winds of 45 mph.

The normal count of named storms in the basin is about 15 storms, with eight achieving hurricane status. Mountainous areas will be most likely to reach the AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 28 inches. Fifteen to 19 named storms are expected to form with the possibility of six to eight of them reaching hurricane force. These life-threatening dangers will be heightened in areas of mountainous terrain where steep slopes can give way once the ground becomes extremely saturated. AccuWeather meteorologists expect Agatha to make landfall as a Category 2 hurricane (maximum sustained winds of 96-110 mph) Monday evening along the southern coast of Mexico in the state of Oaxaca. There was a hurricane warning in effect for the southern coast of Mexico from Salina Cruz to Lagunas de Chacahua.

Meet the Surprising Star of Mexico's New Bank Note (Global Press Journal)

Ian López Ruiz, 8, visited the Museo del Ajolote in Mexico City earlier this year after spotting the axolotl salamander on the new 50-peso bank note.

The water there was likely too acidic for them to survive and teeming with fish ready to feast on them, he says. “I am seeing a growing need and intelligence on society’s part to say, ‘No, let’s stop this nonsense. Since the rollout of the new note, many have approached him to learn more about the species. While conditions are suitable, the municipal system often draws water from the lake, causing researchers to worry that it will empty out, leaving the axolotl to die. The bill received the International Bank Note Society’s 2021 Bank Note of the Year Award and has caught local imagination to such an extent that online sellers are offering it for as much as 500,000 pesos (approximately $25,000). Rocío Espinoza de los Monteros, a curator at Mexico’s Numismatic Society, a collective devoted to studying currency, says people are collecting the bill rather than spending it due to perceived scarcity, although the note is currently in circulation. We found out that they are in danger of extinction,” she says. “He showed me the video, and I told him, ‘We should go see it.’” People of all ages visit the museum, but children seem most keen, Valencia says. Owing to a host of factors, including pollution in their habitat, illegal commercial fishing and the introduction of fish that eat axolotl eggs and larvae, the axolotl population in Xochimilco plummeted from 6,000 per square kilometer (2,300 per square mile) in 1998 to fewer than 35 per square kilometer (14 per square mile) in 2014. On Oct. 29, 2021, Banco de México, Mexico’s central bank, issued a new 50-peso ($2.51) bill, the last in a series of redesigned bank notes intended to combat counterfeiting, facilitate people with visual impairments, and increase the note’s longevity. Axolotls are scientifically important, too: They have the ability to completely regenerate their limbs, spinal cords, eyes and even parts of their brains. A few steps away from the canal, axolotls from 3 months to 5 years old range across 10 large ponds — one of several initiatives to conserve the species. Passengers admire a mural featuring four axolotls, a salamander species riding an unexpected surge of popularity.

7 Myths About Mexico That Get Under My Skin (TravelAwaits)

“Mexico is a poor, dangerous backwater country, made up mostly of beaches and hot deserts.” As a part-time expat, I get deeply frustrated hearing the ...

In Latin America, it ranks second only to the University of Buenos Aires. Meanwhile, the Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico’s MIT, has been ranked in the top 200 out of 1,673 prestigious universities in the world for the fifth consecutive year. One of the painful ironies is that, whereas in the U.S., and especially on the West Coast, homelessness has become the norm. Mexico’s percentage of indígenas (Natives), one-third, is the largest of any Western Hemisphere nation. I always assumed Mexico was way behind the U.S. in terms of its acceptance of, for example, same-sex marriage and abortion rights. Another common myth about Mexico is that it’s made up primarily of hot, humid beaches and dry, dusty deserts. In fact, Mexico doesn’t even have an official language. Oddly, April and May are hotter than July and August, because summer is the rainy season when afternoon thunderstorms, similar to monsoons, cool things off. The head of the household probably has a licenciado (bachelor’s degree) or the equivalent of an associate’s degree from one of Mexico’s universities. Its percentage of middle class citizens is higher than many countries, including some in Europe. But every year, half a million weapons are smuggled into Mexico from the U.S., and many of them end up being used by drug cartels. Yet New Orleans has five times the assault rate as Mexico City, which is also safer than Miami, Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. Of course, Mexico can be dangerous, and it’s particularly unsafe for certain professions (like journalism), because narcotraficos don’t want their strategies exposed.

Convention dictates that, if the central vortex of Agatha remains intact when it reaches the Gulf of Mexico, the storm would retain its name. Agatha is likely to become just the third eastern Pacific hurricane to make landfall during May on record. A general 5 to 10 inches with a few 15-inch totals is probable in the state of Chiapas. A widespread 10 to 16 inches of rain is forecast for Oaxaca, with localized amounts to 20 inches in the high terrain. The Hurricane Center is forecasting that the storm will make landfall Monday night with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph — or as a high-end Category 2 hurricane. The largest surge is expected near and just east of where the storm makes landfall.
