"You show up here and it’s hard to lock back in," Pederson said. The Giants recently lost four straight before winning their last two games in New York. Pederson was 1 for 3 with an RBI on a hit-by-pitch in Friday's game. “It’s over as far as I’m concerned," Pederson said when asked about possibly seeing Pham on Saturday. "I don’t think I’ll speak to him. Pederson went on to say that "it was an unfortunate situation over a fantasy football league rule that wasn’t a rule." Both managers, the Reds' David Bell and the Giants' Gabe Kapler, declined to comment after the game. "He kind of came up and said like ‘you remember from last year?’" Pederson recalled after Friday's game.

“So I kind of left the situation.” “I said ‘you literally have the same thing on your bench.’” He did not say directly that Pham had sent the message. Pederson said Friday’s incident did not have much lead-up. The violence between Pham and Pederson is not unheard-of in sports. And in the eighth inning there was further confusion when Kapler called on reliever Jake McGee, only to be informed that McGee had mistakenly been left off that day’s lineup card, thus making him ineligible to play. More than a year ago, Pederson said there was a disagreement about a transaction he had made in which he moved a player who was listed as out to injured reserve. When fights occur in professional sports it can sometimes take years for the facts to come out. “It just so happened that he had a player, Jeff Wilson, who was out, and he had him on the I.R.,” Pederson said. When asked what happened, Pederson explained that he and Pham participate in a fantasy football league together. Pederson expressed confusion that Pham was upset about the move; he said that Pham had executed a similar transaction with his own roster, going as far as to offer who the player in question was with Pham’s team. “I looked up the rules and sent a screenshot of the rules, how it says when a player is ruled out you’re allowed to put them on the I.R., and that’s all I was doing,” Pederson said.

MLB investigates on-field scuffle between Reds' Tommy Pham ... (CBS sports.com)

Tommy Pham is alleged to have slapped Joc Pederson in the face and sat out Friday's game.

Maybe there's a possibility that this is actually over money, as in perhaps Pham won money via the league or side bets and Pederson never paid up? There is the serious front, where it's possible Pham will be disciplined by the league. Apparently, Pham slapped Pederson and the issue stems from a Fantasy Football league. Still, no one should still be playing meaningful Fantasy Football in the last week of the NFL regular season. There was the added week to the schedule this season, so most leagues were able to expand their regular season by a game and that made the playoffs go a little deeper into the calendar than usual. Tommy Pham slapped Joc Pederson "Will Smith-style" during Reds batting practice on Friday, according to multiple sources.

Pham was scratched from the lineup just before the game began on Friday night. I don’t think he wants to talk to me, I don’t know. He also explained that he has no interest in retaliating later in the series. Pederson said that Pham accused him of cheating in a fantasy football league that both MLB players were participating in by placing a player on injured reserve and replacing him with a fantasy football free agent. That was basically all of it.” He kind of came up and said, like, I don’t know if you remember from last year and I was like fantasy football.

The league is going to investigate now, and as silly as the story is, a physical bit of violence like that is likely to result in some heavy punishment for Pham. You may recall that Pham recently also got into an argument with the Padres about a home plate collision ( talking about being willing to fight), and also had the scary incident where he was stabbed. None of that is to say there is a definite relationship here to the current story, but only that Pham has been involved in some wild stuff. I put a player on the injured reserve when they were listed as out and then added another player.

It's possible Pederson meant last NFL season - meaning 2021 - when he said "over a year ago." In 2021, Pham and Pederson played in all six games in which the Padres faced the Cubs before Pederson was traded in July to the Atlanta Braves. Both played in five Braves-Padres games - three in July and two in September. Pham only played in 31 games for the Padres in 2020, and Pederson only played in 43 games that season for Los Angeles. But they both played in all seven Dodgers-Padres games in August of that season, and the two teams also met in the NLDS that year.

Joc Pederson vs. Tommy Pham Fantasy football rules dispute: What ... (CBSSports.com)

Fantasy leagues are all over the map when it comes to injured reserve rules, so it's important to get ahead of any disagreements.

So, to get around it with guys like Wilson and Michael Thomas last season, leagues where I am commissioner adjusted our rules to allow any player who was injured to be on IR – with the express stipulation that it could only be used for PUP list players in addition to IR. If your league allows for this kind of loophole, go ahead and close it – either by changing your settings or by stipulating before the season that the IR should only be used for players on the real life IR or PUP list. OK, Wilson wasn't technically on IR for the 49ers last season, sure, but he was on the Physically Unable to Perform list after suffering a knee injury during the offseason. Wilson, who led the 49ers in rushing in 2020, didn't play until Week 10 last season while on the PUP list, but he started four games for them down the stretch and was clearly worth stashing if you could afford it. Apparently, there was some disagreement about the way IR spots were used, and it comes down to a limitation in how IR spots work in many leagues. Joc Pederson was waiting for us after the game, with receipts from his group text exchange with Tommy Pham. He sent a GIF of three weightlifters with Giants, Dodgers and Padres logos superimposed on them.

MLB's Joc Pederson, Tommy Pham provide fantasy league (and life ... (USA TODAY)

The squabble between Joc Pederson and Tommy Pham over a fantasy football league leads to life lessons for all.

And as is probably the case in a fantasy league with MLB players, I’ve also had to deal with some pretty healthy egos. Coincidentally, just this past week we had a situation in LABR in which I had a request to put a player on the injured list because his vaccination status prevented him from crossing the Canadian border. The sad part about the whole story is … it didn’t have to be that way. And another who tends to take those comments – however good-natured they may have been – a little too seriously. So while he may have felt comfortable joking about the Padres’ second-half collapse, Pham wasn’t amused. That’s apparently what Pham did a couple weeks after the dispute. It isn’t easy running a fantasy league. That seemed to be the end of it. And when he does, there’s usually someone else who likes to complain about it. Pham felt it was cheating because the player was inactive, but wasn’t officially on injured reserve. There’s the person who doesn’t mind bending the rules to his advantage. No additional punches were thrown and both players left the field.
