There are far better values in the 2022 Indy 500 starting grid. Herta has a much better chance to win than his long Indianapolis 500 2022 odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. One surprise: the model is high on Colton Herta, even though he's an 18-1 long shot in the latest 2022 Indianapolis 500 odds. Now, the model simulated the 2022 Indianapolis 500 ( see tickets at StubHub) 10,000 times. He will be in the middle of the 2022 Indianapolis 500 starting grid, while Scott Dixon is on the pole after posting the fastest Indy 500 pole speed of all time.

From Scott Dixon to Stefan Wilson: 33 things to know about the 2022 ... (USA TODAY)

Only seven drivers, including Scott Dixon, were racing in IndyCar when the now-six-time Series champ won his one and only Indy 500 back in 2008. Should Dixon ...

And if IMS has its way, it will be the last time they'll allow any sort of hole in the local blackout, barring a future sellout. It likely won't be a win, but there very well may be some magic left in the tank for the Colombian two-time 500 winner. It was only made worse when the team set the gears up wrong for qualifying Saturday and was forced to make a precautionary engine change that cost Wilson a chance to attempt a qualifying run. I'm not sure any of the three have enough to win, but they have the cars and the skills to pull off a Pagenaud-like 2021 leap. But for Helio Castroneves to win his record fifth 500 on Sunday, he'll have to do so from starting 27th, a spot only three drivers have managed to win as far (or farther) back as. 18. Conor Daly got to a very good place with his race car by the end of last May and he's said over the past two weeks that his ECR No. 20 team rolled out a very similar car right off the trucks. 21. With seven rookies spaced fairly evenly from front to back, this year's Indy 500 Rookie of the Year battle will be fascinating to watch. Will Power (11th) and Josef Newgarden (14th) can do work from the top-half of the field, but there's a lot of really strong cars and talent ahead. Over 500 miles, he can certainly make moves from 12th with the chance to become the third driver ever to win the Daytona 500 and Indy 500 on the line. 13. He'll have to have an absolutely spotless, lucky day, but Jimmie Johnson has a legitimate shot to win the Indy 500, and boy wouldn't that've been a head-scratcher to hear two years ago. 7. When asked this question, Carpenter always says he'd be just as happy if one of his team's other cars were to win the 500, but for a guy who grew up around this place and has had so many close calls, I just have to believe it would eat away at him a little. 10. In that bunch of teammates near the front, Arrow McLaren SP has two drivers (Pato O'Ward and Felix Rosenqivst) starting as far up as they ever have for the 500.

Colton Herta cleared to race in Indy 500 after his car flips upside ... (USA TODAY)

Colton Herta's car flipped upside down and skidded along the Indianapolis Motor Speedway track in a scary moment during Friday's Carb Day practice.

Though Herta didn't flip end-over-end nearly as many times Friday, his crash somewhat resembled a smaller-scale version of Michael's dad Mario's testing crash at IMS in 2006, where his car got air underneath it and flipped end-over-end several times through the air. Along with Friday's crash, Herta's team also had to scramble Saturday of qualifying weekend to make an engine change after his car sputtered out during the warmup lap of his initial run. "Unfortunately, the car hasn't had all the massaging on it and things like that," Andretti said. Herta said he believed the hit his car sustained was between 60 and 70 Gs. Earlier in the season, Jack Harvey suffered a major crash during a post-qualifying practice at Texas, where he felt fine initially, but after IndyCar received his accelerometry data, he required a more extensive check-up. Callum Ilott had the most with 68. The car flipped over sideways, flew through the air and landed on the roll hoop, skidding to a stop in the south chute between Turns 1 and 2. It's a nicer feeling when it comes to that. While the team was in the early stages of post-crash work, Andretti said he didn't believe the engine would need to be replaced. Assuming he's cleared to drive for Sunday's 500, the focus on Herta's No. 26 squad now shifts to trying to ready his backup car. (On Carb Day), you're just waiting for something like that to happen. "We'll find out on Sunday (if the new car still reacts the same). I don't know, I'm hoping for no changes, but I'd be surprised if there wasn't an effect on it. "But it's very impressive when you can get hit like that and still be standing and fine and no major injuries or anything like that."

Johnson was fastest in four-lap mock qualifying runs, one day before Dixon averaged 234 mph to record the fastest pole run in history. It’s a natural question given that IndyCar racing doesn’t exactly rank among the county’s most-watched sports—except for one Sunday afternoon on Memorial Day weekend, of course. The Andretti Autosport driver walked out of the infield care center uninjured but required further evaluation before getting the green light to race Sunday. Carpenter sure ECR can fight for Indy 500 win in any circumstance (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

As usual, the Ed Carpenter Racing-Chevrolets have qualified well for the 106th running of the Indy 500, with Rinus VeeKay and Carpenter himself lining up ...

Describing how a team bounces back from that disappointment, Carpenter said: “You just have to start over and go through the process: just because you’re successful one year doesn’t guarantee success the next. But you have to put in the same work over and over and over again, and each time you add layers to that, to be more thorough and in depth and prepared. Rinus had a penalty or something, and Conor [Daly] had his issues [Graham Rahal’s stray wheel damaging his car.]. All three of our cars were good enough to win last year: we just weren’t at the right spot at the right time for whatever reason. “I don’t think that we’ve really missed anything, to be honest,” he said. And Carpenter, a three-time pole-winner, for this race, said that he’s not concerned what type of track conditions they’ll have for the race, just as long as his team makes the right calls in terms of setup. I think we’ll be able to fight in any of the conditions."

As Corbett suggested, Garner approached his job without artifice – beyond the fact that he was acting – and we loved and still love him for it. “I was there for quite a bit of the filming of Grand Prix, but to your point, no, I don’t think I quite realized how much risk Dad was taking to make that movie. Even later, I used to hear about him going to work and just think, ‘That’s dad, he does things that are make believe,’ and it wouldn’t occur to me that he might be going off to do things that are super-dangerous.” They just put a thin strip of leather in to look like a Formula 1 seat of the time, but there was no padding. While a character such as James Bond was smooth, slick, cocksure of himself and always had a gadget or five to pull him out of trouble, Aron was a suave, heroic yet very human figure, fighting the same earthly bonds of emotion and judgment as the rest of us, but doing it better. The late three-time Indy 500 winner and two-time Indy car champion Bobby Unser, one of Garner’s unofficial driving coaches, once told me: “James was a very good student of racing. Garner’s easy-going manner and man-of-the-people attitude probably removed his mystique for many, and therefore robbed him of some of the adulation he deserved.

Marcus Ericsson wins Indy 500 in two-lap shootout over Pato O'Ward (NBC Sports)

Marcus Ericsson won the Indy 500 in a two-lap shootout over Pato O'Ward, ending a 10-year winless drought at the track for Chip Ganassi Racing.

It was actually pretty good in 1 and 2, 3 and 4 was a bit more tricky, but 1 and 2, I was pretty good. But big thanks to the safety team, the safety barrier as well, but sorry for the team as well. Turn 2 was a major trouble spot as the site of crashes by Johnson, VeeKay, Ilott and Romain Grosjean, who found the wall while exiting the corner on Lap 106. “First of all, I have to say sorry to all the fans and the team and everyone who has worked hard,” VeeKay, 21, told NBC Sports’ Marty Snider. “We put the car on the front row. After skidding through the grass, McLaughlin had a head-on hit in the next corner but was able to walk from the car. The No. 3 Dallara-Chevrolet snapped loose on the exit of Turn 3 and made contact with the right front. The caution flew for the first time on Lap 39 for Rinus VeeKay, who lost control of his No. 21 Dallara-Chevrolet exiting Turn 2 while running second. The six-time IndyCar Series champion was eliminated from contention after serving a drive-through penalty for going too fast in the pit lane on entry. “Yeah, I just turned into Turn 2, the car gets loose. But I knew the car was amazing. So I knew the car was fast enough. But I knew it was probably going to be one.

Marcus Ericsson wins 2022 Indianapolis 500 in a two-lap shootout ... (USA TODAY)

It came down to two laps, and Marcus Ericsson remained on top to win "the Greatest Spectacle in Racing," Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The Spaniard was forced to continue down pit road without stopping and return to the track, but with his fuel running out, Palou had to make an emergency stop with pit road still closed. VeeKay, who started on the front row next to the Ganassi pair, brought out the first caution on lap 39. Dixon, the six-time IndyCar Series champion started on the pole for the second consecutive 500 and the fifth time in his career. "It was hard to remain focused," Ericsson said after the race. The 31-year-old technically won under caution when Sage Karam crashed on the backstretch and brought out the yellow flag as the leaders entered turn 3. He and Kenny Bräck are the only drivers from Sweden to win the race.

Indy 500: Ericsson wins 106th edition after late red-flag drama (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Chip Ganassi Racing's Marcus Ericsson won the 106th running of the Indianapolis 500 after a red flag for Jimmie Johnson's late crash.

Dixon pitted for the final time on Lap 175, almost losing it under brakes at pit-in – and he pinged for speeding as a result. O’Ward pitted later than all of them and cycled his way to the front, while Kanaan suffered a slow stop and lost ground to the leaders, losing a spot to Ericsson also. Ericsson jumped clear with aggressive weaving, O’Ward attacked around the outside of Turn 1 but Ericsson held him off. Ericsson then battled past O’Ward, who had to back out of the gas, for third. Dixon and Conor Daly (ECR) had just made their stops but Palou was caught out by a closed pitlane and he had to drive straight through. The second round of pitstops had just begun when Callum Ilott crashed his Juncos Hollinger car at Turn 2.

Pit Road Penalty Extends Indy 500 Bad Luck Streak For Scott Dixon (Frontstretch.com)

He was dominant for much of the race, but instead, he'll depart Indianapolis without a trophy.

This decision ended the 2020 Indy 500 in the hands of Sato and handed Dixon his third runner-up finish. Through his 20 Indianapolis 500 attempts, Dixon boasts an average starting position of seventh and an average finish of 11th. In 2012 Dixon was running in third as Takuma Sato attacked Franchitti into turn one on the final lap. The resulting contact launched Dixon over Howard and into the air at over 210 mph. Dixon put together a massive run in qualifying on May 22, the fastest pole run in Indy 500 history with a four-lap average speed of 234.06 mpg. This effectively ended Dixon’s race less than 40 laps after he surpassed Al Unser for the record of most laps led in Indy 500 history.

Marcus Ericsson Wins the Indy 500 After a Late Red Flag (The New York Times)

With a few laps to go, Marcus Ericsson seemed to have the race well in hand. But a crash and a restart made him work a little harder for the victory.

Formula 1 held its storied Monaco Grand Prix earlier in the day. The crowd, which IndyCar officials said approached 325,000 people, marked a return to normalcy after two years of Covid disruptions. With a few laps to go, Marcus Ericsson seemed to have the race well in hand. His win was the first Indianapolis 500 victory for the Chip Ganassi Racing team in 10 years. Two of Ericsson’s Ganassi teammates dominated for much of the race. A poorly timed pit stop by Palou — moments after a caution flag closed pit road — sent him to the back of the field and essentially ended his chance at victory.

Indy 500 dominator Dixon “just messed up” in pit speeding incident (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Scott Dixon has shouldered the blame for the pit speeding incident that cost him a shot at a second Indy 500 win.

“I had to work a lot today, it was super-hard to come back from there. “I had lots of fun in this race, there was just one point where my heart broke in pieces,” said Palou, who led 47 laps. The reigning IndyCar champion was just about to enter the pits when the red light came on for Callum Ilott’s crash at Turn 2, and Palou missed the pit commit line by one second.

Swedish driver Ericsson gives Ganassi another Indy 500 win (The Morning Sun)

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Marcus Ericsson had to leave Formula One to become a global superstar, a goal achieved Sunday when the Swedish driver won the ...

He joined the Ganassi organization in his second IndyCar season and has been steadily adapting to the formula and understanding ovals; Ericsson finished a career-best third on the Texas Motor Speedway oval that was the warmup for the Indy 500. Palou was an early contender until a caution closed the pits when he needed to stop for fuel. Ganassi had not won the 500 in 10 years and sent five legitimate contenders to Indy to end the drought. The New Zealander led 95 of the 200 laps on Sunday and his Honda was easily the fastest in the field — so fast that Dixon didn’t slow down enough on his final pit stop. He signed a contract extension with Arrow McLaren SP on Friday and desperately wanted the win to celebrate his status as McLaren’s star. “You’re going to have things happen in these 500-mile races and they’re not always going to fall your way. It is the fifth Indy 500 win for team owner Chip Ganassi, who caught a ride to the victory podium on the side of Ericsson’s car. But O’Ward finished second, falling just short as he tried to give Mexico a banner celebration on the biggest day in motorsports; Sergio Perez opened Sunday with a win in the Monaco Grand Prix. Ericsson was winless in five seasons in F1 before he packed up for the United States and a move to North American open-wheel racing. “It was hard to re-focus but I knew the car was amazing. Karam was transported to a hospital for evaluation of muscular soreness. For Ericsson, it was his third career IndyCar victory in 52 career starts.
