As Dallas Keuchel struggled to tread water, his postgame quotes often reflected reality that only Keuchel could see. If you were charitable, you'd chalk it ...

For Keuchel, it was the risk of decline for a guy whose fastball sat south of 90 mph. And maybe it was, because the White Sox designated Keuchel for assignment this afternoon. Keuchel dropped to 2-5 with a 7.88 ERA over 32 innings in 2022, with career worsts in most meaningful categories. “Right away, most of the balls are in the air which shows that, at that point, movement wasn’t there. I was really, really feeling like myself in Boston, and then against New York at home, so to take a couple steps back is very frustrating. If you were charitable, you’d chalk it up to a veteran with some of baseball’s least imposing stuff requiring outward confidence to bounce back; faking it to resume making it.

White Sox' Dallas Keuchel Designated for Assignment (NBC Chicago)

Just before the start of Crosstown, the Chicago White Sox designated left-handed pitcher Dallas Keuchel for assignment.

Keuchel has struggled with the White Sox this season. “It's been a little bit of a rollercoaster the first month and change and the second half of last year outside of a couple injuries. It's been a downhill decline since then. Keuchel finished fifth in American League Cy Young voting in 2020, his first with the White Sox. In 11 starts, Keuchel posted a 1.99 ERA. It's not the first time this is back to back starts this has happened. Keuchel gave up six runs in two innings to the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night.

The questions linger because the White Sox are not what they should be, and it's hard to figure what brought them to this point.

As with his struggling hitters, Hahn made reference to “the back of the baseball card” with Keuchel, in that they wanted to allot a certain amount of opportunity to a proven veteran player to just produce the way he always has. “I don’t think that anything should be read on the decision on Dallas Keuchel beyond it was time to move on from Dallas Keuchel. No one in there needs a message sent via a roster move to one of their teammates. The White Sox have $18 million committed to Keuchel this season (the fourth-highest salary on the team), but because he was designated for assignment before the end of May, after what Hahn conceded was a substantial period of discussion, this year’s roster was planned and constructed with this possibility in mind. Do they finish with a higher postseason seed in 2021 with him and fare differently in the playoffs because of his presence? He would have been a crucial cog in a White Sox rotation that has clearly been recently fortified with alternatives so it could absorb a move like cutting ties with Keuchel — as the team did Saturday. And they’re the sort of thing we really dwell on only when the road that was taken proves to be very bumpy.

Chicago White Sox finally DFA Dallas Keuchel after horrendous run (Southside Showdown)

The Chicago White Sox designated left handed starting pitcher Dallas Keuchel for assignment today. Infielder Danny Mendick takes his spot on the roster.

Dallas Keuchel had a great first season for the Chicago White Sox in 2020 when he posted a 1.99 ERA and finished fifth in Cy Young voting. It still might help the White Sox to trade for a starting pitcher at some point but there’s no reason to panic right now. It is good to see Mendick get called up but the Chicago White Sox should look into calling up Yolbert Sanchez as well. Overall, Dallas Keuchel has 101 wins in his big league career, which is pretty good but that isn’t helping them in 2022. Dallas was a big reason for the Sox’s struggles so far. Second base has been a weakness since Nick Madrigal first got injured last season.

CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox designated left-handed pitcher Dallas Keuchel for assignment on Saturday and recalled infielder Danny Mendick from Triple-A ...

The White Sox 40-man roster decreases to 38 with the Keuchel move. “The plan is to put ourselves in a good position to beat the Cubs today and tomorrow and then figure it out once we head out on the road. It’s a jolt, but you have to continue to figure out how to win baseball games with or without whoever is in this locker room today or tomorrow. He was in the final year of a three-year, $55.5 million deal. “In fact, though we had been talking about this internally for a period of time, his starts against New York at our place and Boston at Fenway were impressive enough to continue to give him the ball. But that turnaround will not come with the White Sox, as his six runs allowed over two innings Thursday was his last start with the team.

Is This the End of the Road for Dallas Keuchel? (Sports Illustrated)

His performance in 2021 and 2022 is rather concerning following what was a Cy Young-level season. Why throw out those numbers without context? That brought the left-hander's ERA on the year to 7.88, the final year of a 3-year, $55.5 million deal that Keuchel signed with the White Sox before the 2020 season.

White Sox Designate Dallas Keuchel For Assignment (MLB Trade Rumors)

It doesn't seem likely that another team would claim Keuchel off waivers, since such a move would put that new team on the hook for the roughly $14.1MM Keuchel ...

Giolito, Kopech, and Cease have all been very good, Cueto has yet to allow a run over 12 innings of work, and the White Sox certainly hope that Lynn can return to his usual form once his rehab assignment is over. As well as Keuchel performed in 2020, the signing still has to be considered a misfire for GM Rick Hahn’s front office. Only some flashes of that good form continued into 2021, however, as Keuchel finished with a 5.28 ERA over 162 largely inconsistent innings with Chicago last year. Should Keuchel clear waivers and then be released, the White Sox would pay the remainder of that salary, and a new team who signed Keuchel could only owe the lefty the prorated MLB minimum salary. Even with these struggles, it stands to reason that Keuchel’s track record will earn him some attention from one of the many teams looking for rotation help. The initial returns on the signing were great, as Keuchel posted a 1.99 ERA over 63 1/3 innings during the shortened 2020 season and finished fifth in AL Cy Young Award voting.

CHICAGO (AP) — Dallas Keuchel gave the Chicago White Sox a boost two years ago, helping a team with an exciting young core reach the playoffs.

But he struggled last year, finishing with a 5.28 ERA in 32 games. Vince Velasquez made seven starts for the team before pitching three hitless innings in relief on Tuesday night. “He's got a lot to be proud of. “You've got to look at the career,” manager Tony La Russa said. Keuchel broke into the majors in 2012 with Houston. He won the AL Cy Young Award in 2015, going 20-8 with a 2.48 ERA in 33 starts for the Astros. “There was not a magic number of starts, necessarily, that were required before we made that decision.”

Why White Sox designated Dallas Keuchel for assignment: 'It was time' (NBC Sports Chicago)

The White Sox wanted to give Dallas Keuchel every opportunity to get back on track but "it was time" to part ways.

“Unfortunately, the latter half of his White Sox career didn’t pan out the way we had hoped,” Hahn said. Keuchel posted a 1.99 ERA in 11 starts during the shortened 60-game 2020 season, finishing fifth in AL Cy Young voting. Lance Lynn is nearing a return from the injured list, and they don’t plan to use a six-man rotation. He went 6-1 with a 3.78 ERA in his first 14 starts of 2021. Over his final 18 outings (16 starts), he went 3-8 with a 6.70 ERA. “It had gotten to the point where we had a greater level of confidence in the alternatives going forward,” Hahn said.

Left-hander Dallas Keuchel, who had a 7.88 ERA this season after compiling a 5.28 ERA last year, has been designated for assignment by the White Sox.

The White Sox have 10 days to trade Keuchel unless he's claimed on waivers. Keuchel, 34, was 2-5 with a 7.88 ERA this season after compiling a 5.28 ERA in 32 games last year. The White Sox don't have much room in their rotation when all their arms are healthy.

Following up: Dallas Keuchel's DFA shifts all attention to offense (Sox Machine)

On Saturday, the White Sox designated Dallas Keuchel for assignment. Today, Lance Lynn will make his first rehab start for the Charlotte Knights.

That’s true enough, and it might be easier for everybody to compartmentalize Keuchel’s ups and downs were the White Sox otherwise in sound position. “Unfortunately the latter half of his White Sox career didn’t pan out the way we had hoped. Hahn said it’s a quadriceps issue for Moncada and it won’t force him to the injured list. “We certainly got what we expected in 2020 and in the first half or so in ’21,” said general manager Rick Hahn, who spent the early portions of his Saturday media session lauding the first half of Keuchel’s tenure. Hahn said two players will have to go on the restricted list because they’re unvaccinated, and we’ll see what kind of impact that has come Tuesday. Keuchel posted a 1.99 ERA in 11 starts during the shortened 60-game 2020 season, finishing fifth in AL Cy Young voting.

Cardinals Rumors: Should St. Louis target Dallas Keuchel? (Redbird Rants)

Should the St. Louis Cardinals target Dallas Keuchel, who was recently designated for assignment by the Chicago White Sox?

With Steven Matz on the Injured List, Keuchel would give them another left-hander in the rotation, and a veteran that pitching coach Mike Maddux could work with. The White Sox now have 10 days to trade Keuchel unless he’s claimed on waivers. He is not that same pitcher, but it’s possible that he can once again be an effective pitcher with a few tweaks.
