Star Wars celebration makes room for other LucasFilm properties.

But like many fantasy films from the ‘80s, such as Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal, it became a staple of millennial home video watching. Thankfully, Ron Howard’s been trying to get a Willow TV show made for some time, and the world apparently needs Willow’s magic again. It’s certainly better than the re-edits Disney+ made to Howard’s Splash.

'Willow' Series Gets November Premiere Date, Teaser Trailer, First ... (Deadline)

Disney+ said Willow, its live-action original series based on the 1988 fantasy film directed by Ron Howard, will premiere on November 30.

An unlikely group of heroes set off on a dangerous quest to places far beyond their home, where they must face their inner demons and come together to save their world. Davis made an appearance on behalf of the series at Star Wars Celebration today, calling his return to the character “a dream.” The series, which picks up years after the events of the movie, introduces new characters and is set in a world where brownies, sorcerers, trolls and other mystical creatures flourish.

'Willow' Gets Epic First Trailer And A 2022 Disney Plus Release Date (Forbes)

The new Willow TV show gets its first trailer plus still images and a release date on Disney+. It looks fantastic.

I won’t explain the connection here, other than to say it’s rather surprising and really great. In many ways, Lucasfilm sort of dropped the ball on all of these great stories by not releasing more of them sooner, when actors like Val Kilmer and Mark Hamill were younger and could reprise their roles in a more timely fashion. “An epic period fantasy series with a modern sensibility set in an enchanted land of breathtaking beauty, “Willow” features a diverse international cast with Jonathan Kasdan, Ron Howard, Wendy Mericle, Kathleen Kennedy, and Michelle Rejwan serving as executive producers. Second, speaking of Star Wars this is pretty much the first thing LucasFilm has done that’s not set in a Galaxy Far Far Away in ages. But I like Willow just as much as Star Wars so it’s wonderful to see this take shape. In the trailer, we see Willow and a whole brand new cast of characters in a much-overhauled version of the magical land of Willow’s past.

Willow, the sequel to Willow, gets a trailer featuring Willow (The Verge)

Once upon a time, Ron Howard and George Lucas wanted to try and replicate the success of Star Wars by creating a whole new fantasy, Willow.

The rest of the cast of the new show probably wasn’t even alive when the film premiered, but they certainly have a lot to do. The trailer for the new show features a few returning characters, including Joanne Whalley’s Sorsha and at least one of the brownies (played by Kevin Pollak and Rick Overton in the film). The film only did okay at the box office, and any nascent plans for a sequel were put on ice.

Willow sequel series for Disney Plus gets first trailer, release date (Polygon)

Disney Plus' revival of Warwick Davis fantasy character Willow will debut this November. The first trailer for Willow was released Thursday at Star Wars ...

The original Willow hit movie theaters in 1988, but Lucas conceived of his fantasy adventure in the early ’70s, and chose Davis — who had appeared in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi as an Ewok — to be his leading man. And the first trailer shows Warwick Davis, in this eponymous role as Willow Ufgood, returning to (perhaps reluctantly) contend with a new imbalance of good and evil. Willow will not be alone for his next journey, naturally.

Willow 2022 Trailer: Big Hints and Even Bigger Questions About ... (IGN)

After 34 years, Warwick Davis returns as Willow Ufgood for a new TV series... and he's not alone. Here are some big hints and some even bigger questions ...

The fate of that cute baby Elora was placed in the hands of Sorsha and Madmartigan, who adopted the little girl at the end of the original Willow with the intention of raising her in Tir Asleen. According to early casting sides, the character of Kit (Cruz) is a princess and daughter of Sorsha. Is she the product of the union of Madmartigan and Sorsha, or is she actually Elora, whom the prophecy says will unite the kingdoms? Bring on the rest of the menagerie! We shall see, but any good journey story usually has a fellowship, and it looks to be six who are undertaking this adventure together: Willow, Kit, Jade (Kellyman), Dove (Bamber), Boorman (Amer Chadha-Patel) and Revolori’s as yet unnamed character. At the Star Wars Celebration panel for Willow, Davis confirmed that his real-life daughter, Annabelle Davis, is playing his grown-up, onscreen daughter, while his son, Lloyd Davis, is taking all the tumbles as Willow’s stunt double. It’s been 34 years since the Ron Howard-directed Willow, which was based on an original story from George Lucas and written by Bob Dolman. Essentially it was the origin story of Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis), a sheltered Nelwyn dwarf who aspired to be a sorcerer. As it turned out, Elora was prophesied to end the evil reign of Queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh). With his small kind sufficiently freaked out, Willow is tasked with returning the baby to the humans and in the process ends up collecting some allies, including the mercenary swordsman Madmartigan (Val Kilmer), the queen’s daughter Sorsha (Joanne Whalley), and two tiny Brownies (Kevin Pollak and Rick Overton).
