Hurricanes Stifle Rangers in Dominant Game 5 Win (Puck Prose)

The Carolina Hurricanes put together a dominant performance in Game 5 against the New York Rangers and now have a 3-2 lead in the series.

If they can figure out how to win a game on the road in this playoff season, there might not be any stopping the Canes. It was his first goal of the series, making it even more important. Carolina did not only defend well, but its offensive pressure also eliminated opportunities for the Rangers to generate momentum.

So now the Rangers will need to dig deep and find their intestinal fortitude. I think the never-die mentality has been in this team from Day One, and I’ve kind of felt that from walking in a couple of months ago.” They were able to roar back and take it with an Artemi Panarin OT goal in Game 7. When I look around the room the feel in that dressing room is super-confident at all times. “We have to win one game in [Carolina] to win the series.

It’s not out of the realm of possibility to do it again now. With the goal taken off of the scoreboard, the Hurricanes put on a ton of offensive pressure and scored a power-play goal by Teuvo Teravaniev which gave the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead. The Rangers have faced elimination three times already in this playoffs. Added to the equation that the team was a step or two behind the Hurricanes all night and it became apparent the Ranger’s only way out of Raleigh would be if their goalkeeper could steal a win. It’s a little cliché, but there are a lot of things we can take from that game and do a better job of. Unfortunate, but that’s the way the game is, a rule is a rule.

That’s because the Rangers followed their best game of the series with their worst, getting outshot 34-17 Thursday night, as both Chris Kreider and Artemi Panarin failed to record a shot on goal. The Rangers return to Madison Square Garden on Saturday for Game 6 of their second-round series against the Hurricanes. It’s getting harder to see how it won’t be the final home game of the season. Carolina regained the series lead and maintained home ice advantage, pushing the Rangers one loss from elimination with a dominant performance in last night’s 3-1 win in Game 5 in Raleigh. Though the Hurricanes return to New York with an 0-5 record on the road in the postseason, they are now 7-0 at home, having held the Rangers to a total of two goals in three games at PNC Arena in this series.

“To me, it was our worst game in the five games in the series. The Canes do know they can count on the power play producing. It’s the same game, the same team.” Lose, again, at the Garden and it will be back to PNC Arena for another tense Game 7. The players and coaches have tired of answering questions about why they’re 7-0 at home, but 0-5 on the road, but the only way to end all that would be to win — once. “We’ve been playing OK but tonight it was good all the way around, more obviously the way we want to play.

"It definitely sucks, but that's the way it goes," Strome said. "We had just kind of talked after the last game," Teravainen said. It marked Carolina's first goal with the man advantage since the final minutes of Game 6 in the first-round win against Boston. Mika Zibanejad scored a power-play goal for New York, winning a first-period faceoff and then drifting to the left side for the putaway just six seconds into the man advantage. Now Carolina faces the challenge of putting away a team that has been resilient, even stubborn, when facing a series deficit. Friday's “First Call” debates the Steelers most “underappreciated player.” We also look ahead to the Pirates game against Joe Musgrove.

In ’09, the Penguins finished off the Hurricanes 4-1 on that date for a four-game sweep. They’d go on to beat the Detroit Red Wings in seven games for the team’s third Stanley Cup. The fact that college hockey is being discussed at all in future terms is a massive win for those who made it happen at the school. It was a shorthand at 12:57 of the first period. That was Staal’s fifth assist and sixth point of the playoffs. That was a 2-1 victory in Game 7 at PPG Paints Arena. Bryan Rust scored twice. Then he got hurt in Week 2 against the Raiders and was lost for the year. For as much as we bemoaned the absence of Stephon Tuitt, the defense looked great in Week 1 against a good Buffalo Bills team. Then the Penguins beat the San Jose Sharks in six games to claim the franchise’s fourth Stanley Cup. “First, I calculated and then ranked each player’s season-long contribution metric by team (win share). To sum it up without getting overly technical, contribution metric, or win share, measures each player’s production during a season, in this case, the 2021 campaign. Consistent. Quiet. Can play two positions, and is a positive locker room influence. “Computer vision shows that his blocking win-share metric ranked fourth best among tight ends in the NFL last season.

And, when New York was trailing 0-2 against the Canes, he managed to shut out 73 of 75 shots to even the series. "I do understand the gravity of the situation. Win the first shift, win the first period and go from there." "We've been playing OK, but tonight was good all the way around – more obviously how we want to play." The Canes were 0-9 on the power play heading into Thursday night’s game. "When you can get a shorthanded goal early it's big because it takes life out of their power play," centre Seth Jarvis said.

Rangers 'looked tired,' have backs against the wall again after Game ... (The Athletic)

The Rangers were tied after 20 minutes and only down a goal after 40, but they were miles away.

Gallant shuffled his lines to try to light a spark in the third but left Kaapo Kakko on the fourth line and Tyler Motte on the third. Even at 1-1, it felt like a game Igor Shesterkin needed to steal for the Rangers to have a chance. … A big part of (the game) was our inability to get through the neutral zone. Can’t recall Alain Vigneault or John Tortorella (or even Mike Keenan) trotting that one out in the middle of a playoff series. And make themselves un-tired in the process. The Rangers still have confidence in themselves. “Personally I’ve got to do a better job on the wall. That’s a nod to the Hurricanes, now 7-0 at home in the playoffs and continuing to look like a completely different team in their own building than away from it. Mika Zibanejad scored on the power play, but his line was hogtied once again by Jordan Staal’s line — not just denied chances but many shifts denied the puck as Staal, Nino Niederreiter and Jesper Fast cycled it deep in the Rangers zone. Gerard Gallant didn’t shy away from saying that after the Rangers no-showed in Game 5, a 3-1 loss that felt like 13-1 after Andrei Svechnikov barreled past Adam Fox for a breakaway goal with 6:59 to go. And now it’s back to the backs against the wall. And can you do it against a Hurricanes team that gave the Rangers nothing for the vast majority of Game 5?

Below are my top 10 prospect rankings for the New York Rangers organization. In order to be considered a prospect, the player must be on their entry-level ...

Bobby Trivigno was a late signing and thus not eligible to be part of the Rangers playoff run as an extra. He is an RFA and Chris Drury will be lucky to get a second round pick for his rights at the Draft this summer. He was also called up a few times by the Rangers adding 2 assists in 12 games this season. Number two on my list is Nils Lundkvist. The 21 year-old defenseman struggled to adjust coming over from Sweden but still showed me enough that he was worth the first-round selection in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. In 25 games with the Rangers, he posted 1 goal and 4 points. Regardless of what the Rangers do from here on out, this has already been a huge step in the right direction for a young team. That means their first selection will be in the fourth round.

Gerard Gallant needs to adjust if NY Rangers are going to pull off ... (The Journal News / Lohud.com)

Asked if the New York Rangers passed up opportunities in Game 5 when they could have fired pucks at Carolina Hurricanes goalie Antti Raanta, Chris Kreider ...

Perhaps not, but they'll need to figure something out if they're going to get back to Raleigh for Game 7 and then have a chance to end the Canes' seven-game home playoff winning streak. Gallant has done an admirable job in his first season with the Rangers, earning recognition as a Jack Adams finalist while leading his team to largely exceed expectations. But I'm not I'm not going to sit Mika on the bench because of the Staal line." "When there's an opportunity to make a play, we make the play," Mika Zibanejad said Wednesday. "We chip it in when we don't have anything else. Gallant isn't going to demote a 52-goal scorer in Kreider, who has had his share of struggles this postseason, which makes Vatrano the obvious candidate. When we're unable to get our forecheck established and if I'm unable to advance the puck, they're obviously going to have more opportunities to establish their forecheck." "Obviously, that's the matchup they want," Gallant said prior to the game. The next step is awakening Panarin, who has yet to produce an even-strength point in this series. That was said in jest, but there's a hint of truth to it. It's a necessary evil to get fresh legs on the ice, but it essentially just hands possession back to Carolina. Gallant’s ability to push the right motivational buttons has been a defining trait in his first season on the Blueshirts’ bench. That's led to a lot of fruitless dumping and chasing, which at best results in a 50-50 puck battle but at worst leads to needless giveaways.

New York Rangers: No one said this would be easy (Bluelinestation.com)

After the game, when Gerard Gallant said the team looked “tired” he was sending a message to his players. It was similar to when he said that they played soft.

There was one report that in the Carolina game he was getting heat treatments to his back and if he is indeed suffering from a back injury, that could explain a lot about his play. The Rangers may be better off with more speed in the lineup. That’s down to 12.36 per 60 in the playoffs and10.64 per 60 minutes on the road in Carolina. If he continues to be ineffective the Rangers will have a tough time winning. He was injured in the 4-3 loss to the Hurricanes in game 80 and though Gallant said that he would have been able to play, there is no reason to believe that it isn’t more serious. Based on how this series has gone, there’s reason to believe that we will be spending Memorial Day worrying about the game that night.
