Alan White, Drummer for Yes and John Lennon, Dead at 72 (Rolling Stone)

Yes drummer Alan White, who joined the progressive rock band in 1972 and stayed with them for the next 50 years, has died at 72 after a brief illness.

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. “I just went the whole weekend and listened to the music and got used to it,” he said, “and then there I was in Dallas going onstage with Yes with pretty much no rehearsals.” Yes saw a small army of musicians come and go over the next few decades, but White remained fiercely loyal to the band. “Eventually I got a call back and he told me he was doing a gig in Toronto and was I available to play drums and can he send a car to pick me up the next morning.” “I remember at one point the song started with the drums at the very beginning of the song and the band playing,” White told Rolling Stone. “John played it so good by himself on the piano I said, ‘Why don’t you do the first verse like that?’ He said, ‘That’s a good idea.’ He said, ‘What do you think, Phil [Spector]?’ The next thing you know, we tried it like that and John kept it.” “Throughout his life and six-decade career, Alan was many things to many people,” his family wrote in a statement confirming his death.

Alan White, Drummer for Yes and John Lennon, Dies at 72 (Variety)

Alan White, longtime drummer of progressive-rock titans Yes who also played with John Lennon and George Harrison, has died. He was 72.

White’s career took a turn into progressive territory when he joined Yes in 1972, replacing founding drummer Bill Bruford, who’d left to join King Crimson. White joined the group for its “Close to the Edge” album and also appeared on much of the live triple album “Yessongs,” and his playing (and drum kit) grew in complexity to suit the group’s long and musically elaborate songs. In 1969, Lennon saw White performing with a group called Griffin and recruited him as drummer for his Plastic Ono Band. White initially thought Lennon’s phone call was a prank but soon found himself flying to Toronto with Lennon, Ono, Clapton and Voorman for the hastily arranged gig, rehearsing songs in mid-flight by banging on a seat cushion. He joined his first band, the Downbeats, shortly afterward, and the group’s repertoire of Beatles and Gerry & the Pacemakers covers eventually led to a stint with pop singer Billy Fury. His family added in a Facebook post: “Throughout his life and six-decade career, Alan was many things to many people: a certified rock star to fans around the world; band mate to a select few, and gentleman and friend to all who met him.” He also played on Lennon’s “Imagine” album as well as George Harrison’s 1970 masterpiece “All Things Must Pass.” Alan White, longtime drummer of progressive-rock titans Yes who also played with John Lennon and George Harrison, died Thursday at his Seattle home after a short illness, his family and the band reported on social media.

Drummer who joined in 1972 also played on albums by John Lennon and George Harrison.

“You want to keep the Yes name going to keep that high standard of musicianship and then carry it forward,” he said in 2015. Despite the brief addition of Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes (AKA the Buggles) to the group, Yes split in 1981. White formed another new band, Cinema, with Squire, Yes keyboardist Tony Kaye and guitarist Trevor Rabin, whose demos wooed Jon Anderson back to the fold – they soon relaunched the Yes name.

The production by (now ex member) Horn defined the next extension of Yes, as 90125 gave the supposed “dinosaurs” another lease of life and by far their biggest selling album. Revitalising this lost song, which Buggles had written and Yes had performed live on the Drama tour, proved an inspired idea. While its Fairlight frolics are the opposite of old school drumming, Horn told this writer that he and White spent happy hours putting the rhythm together with their new tech-y toys. They landed another Number One, at what in the media bubble was considered the height of punk. For his first studio album with the band, did Yes ease White in with a simple, straightforward piece of work? Arty, aggressive in parts, its 22-minute Side One (ie, this track) was effectively Jon Anderson’s stab at War And Peace.
