Khan was hired by the Steelers in 2001 when he was 24 years old. Khan’s ability to navigate the NFL salary cap has helped the Steelers build teams that contended on an annual basis. Khan is a first-generation American. He is the son of immigrant parents.

The Steelers spent most of the 2022 NFL offseason searching for a successor to general manager Kevin Colbert, and have opted for an in-house replacement.

Khan had numerous opportunities to go somewhere else during his 21 years with the team but stayed loyal to Rooney. That goes a long way in the Steelers' organization. Khan, 45, is a long-time member of the Steelers' front office who has been with the team since 2001. Pittsburgh has promoted Omar Khan to replace the 65-year-old Colbert, who is retiring after 22 seasons with the team and 12 as its general manager.

Colbert is expected to remain with the Steelers in a reduced capacity. He was a football operations coaching assistant in 2000, working with the Saints offensive coordinator in day-to-day operations of the offense. “I am ready for this challenge and grateful to continue the success we have had on the field during my first 21 years,” Khan said in a statement. The Steelers are expected to hire Mt. Lebanon native Andy Weidl, a Philadelphia Eagles executive, as assistant general manager. Khan received his first promotion with the Steelers in 2011 when he was named director of football administration.

The Pittsburgh Steelers officially announced the promotion of Omar Khan to from vice president to general manager on Wednesday.

“I am extremely excited for this opportunity to be the general manager of the Pittsburgh Steelers,” said Khan. “I would like to thank Art Rooney II, Mike Tomlin, and Kevin Colbert for their support throughout this process. I am ready for this challenge and grateful to continue the success we have had on the field during my first 21 years. “I am pleased to announce Omar Khan as our next general manager,” Rooney said in a press release.
