Blues Overcome MacKinnon Hat Trick to Keep Series Alive vs. Avs (Sports Illustrated)

DENVER (AP) — Tyler Bozak scored 3:38 into overtime and the St. Louis Blues fended off elimination in Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals, ...

MacKinnon came out flying in the first period, taking five shots and scoring twice to give the Colorado an early 2-0 lead. The speedy MacKinnon also had an assist to give him 82 career playoff points. He responded in Game 4 with a hat trick. He went end-to-end, working his way around Blues defenseman Leddy with nifty stick work and lifting a shot over goaltender Ville Husso for a 4-3 lead. The comeback offset a hat trick from Nathan MacKinnon, who looked like he might have just turned in a signature moment with goal No. 3. Robert Thomas had two goals, including the tying tally with 56 seconds left in regulation, for a resilient Blues team.

Blues live on — Bozak's OT goal sends series back to St. Louis (STLtoday.com)

“It was an amazing hockey game,” Bozak said. “I'm sure everyone that was watching thought the same thing. Obviously, (Nathan) MacKinnon's one of the best ...

Maybe we were a little nervous earlier in the game to make mistakes. MacKinnon scored his first goal of the series just 3:51 into the game. As they say in hockey, slowly but surely the ice started tilting their way. “In overtime, there's definitely no such thing as a bad shot, so just tried to get it through the traffic and it went in. As hundreds of hats landed on the ice at Ball, the Blues had to regroup and regroup in a hurry. You’ve just got to keep playing and keep battling and they did that. This was to be a night to bury the Blues, not to see them celebrating deliriously after the Bozak goal. “Just got a little bounce up top and saw a lane to the net,” Bozak said. “We battle back and then we give up that goal like that. Defenseman Nick Leddy had four assists, the most he’s ever had in 129 postseason games. We have a lot of guys who have won before. DENVER — On eight occasions this season, the Blues put together winning streaks of three games or more.

NHL playoffs 2022: Blues vs. Avalanche Game 5 odds, picks and ... (New York Post)

In Game 5 of the 2022 NHL playoffs series, the St. Louis Blues have plenty of value against the Colorado Avalanche.

NY, AZ, CO, CT, IA, IL, IN, MI, NJ, PA, TN, VA, WV only. NY, AZ, CO, CT, IA, IL, IN, MI, NJ, PA, TN, VA, WV only. Must be 21+. AZ, CO, IA, IL, IN, LA, MI, NJ, NY, PA, TN, VA, WV, WY only. 21+. New customers only. And if you’re brave enough to bet on St. Louis, you may as well wait until right before puck drop because it’s hard to imagine this number shortening based on what happened in Game 4. 21+. New customers only. Everything is pointing towards the Avs wrapping this chapter of their postseason run up in five games. And they’re coming off back-to-back wins on the road, including one where their opponents came unglued. Colorado closed as a -265 favorite in Game 2, which also took place in Denver and came on the heels of an impressive win, so there’s a chance that this line ticks up towards -280 or beyond by the time Game 4 gets underway. New customers only. What’s most disappointing is that the Blues had played pretty well in Games 2 and 3, especially before Binnington got hurt. Rather than focusing on knotting up the series, the Blues spent a majority of the game chasing Kadri around the ice and paid the price.

Veteran forward Tyler Bozak's goal at 3:38 of overtime gave the Blues a 5-4 comeback victory over the Colorado Avalanche in Game 5 on Wednesday night, ...

It was the second straight game the Avalanche had a player tally a hat trick, after center Nazem Kadri scored three goals in their Game 4 win. Blues defenseman Justin Faulk tied the game at 15:14 of the third period, jamming the puck past Kuemper on a scramble in front. After scoring five goals in their opening-round sweep of the Nashville Predators, MacKinnon had yet to score a goal against the Blues in the second round. "Obviously, MacKinnon is one of the best players in the league and makes big plays in crucial moments. That was the mindset," Thomas said. "We've gotta move on and win Game 6 on the road," MacKinnon said. He sped through all three zones and beat defenseman Nick Leddy to shoot the puck past Husso. They chipped away a little more at 9:57 of the third period, as Thomas finally found the back of the net, on a nifty setup from linemate Pavel Buchnevich. Colorado star Nathan MacKinnon scored an incredible end-to-end goal with 2:46 left in regulation to give the Avalanche the 4-3 lead, but the Blues still had some fight left in them. All I know is that it went in, and that's all that matters," he said. "I just got a little bounce up top and saw a lane to the net. Just tried to get it through on the traffic.

Blues Coach: Racist Comments to Nazem Kadri Are 'in No Way ... (Sports Illustrated)

Craig Berube condemned the racist threats after initially declining to comment.

Berube also originally criticized Kadri over Binnington’s injury, referring to his “reputation” as a hard-nosed player who has been suspended by the league multiple times. I was aware of a threat made to Nazem. Not the racist stuff. When asked about the threats against Kadri before Game 4, Blues head coach Craig Berube originally declined to comment.

Keys to Victory: St. Louis Blues vs. Colorado Avalanche (Game 5) (The Hockey News)

For the second time in the second round, we have an elimination game on our hands. Here's what you need to know ahead of Game 5 between the St. Louis Blues ...

Even for a quiet run for the latter two by their standards, Colorado's top players have been their top players, and that's all you can ask for in a playoff series. But the Blues are no strangers to playoff adversity, and they still have a lot of the same core that won the Stanley Cup in 2019. Nazem Kadri is having one heck of a series, but, in all fairness, there's much bigger fish to fry on the team.

St. Louis Blues Pros/Cons 2022 Playoff Game 5 Vs Colorado ... (Bleedin' Blue)

The St. Louis Blues were on the brink in Game 5 in Colorado. It required a big effort to keep the season alive. The Blues had a mixed bag.

However, to have the guts and will to force it back to St. Louis just shows how good this team can be when they’re at their best. St. Louis only got their second win of the series and are still in elimination games for Game 6 and a potential Game 7. Tarasenko had the balls to take a shot from a tight angle and got rewarded with the assist on a gigantic goal. The Blues pulled the goalie and kept the Avs in the zone. Then, Buchnevich drives in like a bull and Thomas dinks one in and it was game on. The positive sign was that Thomas was taking the opportunity to get shots. Colorado and the Blues went back and forth in the first couple minutes of overtime, but there was a feeling this one could last awhile. It was a dictionary example of turning the tables on Colorado. No matter the reason, the Blues had to create and they did. It was win or go home and the Blues needed to be at their best from the start. St. Louis couldn’t cash in during the first three minutes and it was all for naught. After a bit of a push and scramble, the fourth line finally chipped in, though Justin Faulk scored, to tie it 3-3.

“Just got a little bounce up top and saw a lane to the net,” Bozak said. Was lucky enough to be on the end of the one in overtime, but yeah, it was awesome. “Faulker read it and was right over the top of him, killing the play. Toropchenko took a shot that was deflected by Colorado and left in the crease, where Justin Faulk and Jordan Kyrou both appeared to get a stick on it. Tarasenko took a shot that went off the mask of Colorado goalie Darcy Kuemper and the puck lay free. Bozak won it and threw it off the boards to Leddy. Leddy took a shot and hit an Avs player, leaving the puck for Bozak. “It was a perfect play, perfect pass from him,” Thomas said. “We just talked, get one goal and get back into it,” Berube said. They were ready to celebrate a series win in five games, and that looked like a guarantee when MacKinnon, who had been kept off the scoreboard the first four games, scored twice for a 2-0 lead after the first period. The Blues were going to be answering questions, and a lot of them: What happened to the Pavel Buchnevich– Robert Thomas– Vladimir Tarasenko line? Thomas, who didn’t have a point in the series, scored two of those goals, including the game-tying goal with 56 seconds left to play. You’ve just got to keep playing and keep battling, and they did that.

“I’m not too concerned about (the Avs) going into St. Louis. But it would’ve been great to close out the series here.” Ryan Kulback, meanwhile, had joked with a friend during Game 4 on Monday that if Kadri notched a hat trick, he would purchase a replica sweater with the Avs center’s name and “91” on it. But maybe the hockey gods felt the storybook ending in this series is in St. Louis.” The Avalanche still holds a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference semifinals, which heads back to St. Louis for a Game 6 on Friday night. “It really felt like the series was over and we would be putting this past us. “For me, it’s playoff hockey — it happens,” Pounders, an Avs fan from Castle Rock, said after watching Colorado fall 5-4 in overtime to St. Louis at Ball Arena Wednesday night.

Minimum salary, maximum impact: Bozak's OT goal keeps Blues ... (Sportsnet.ca)

Talk about an improbable hero. Fourth-line forward Tyler Bozak scored the OT winner as the St. Louis Blues staved off elimination with a comeback victory ...

They’re a great team and we're excited to go have a huge challenge in St. Louis and try to close out a series.” It’s one of the prettiest goals that I’ve seen in a long time.” For the most part, we’ve been doing that but it’s starting to look like you’re either the hammer or the nail in this series, so we have to go out and be the hammer. “Obviously, that stings, especially when (MacKinnon) can go down and get us another one to take the lead back after we had been stumbling,” said Bednar. “Great speed coming through the neutral zone. We’re all tugging on the same rope and truly it does not matter about what kind of goals you score, as long as we can win. Was lucky enough to be on the end of the one in overtime, but yeah, it was awesome. But it starts with the competitiveness and the puck decisions. “They played with more desperation than us in the second half of the game,” said Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar. “You have to stay aggressive. “Just got a little bounce up top and saw a lane to the net. You’ve just got to keep playing and keep battling and they did that. As the play developed, Vladimir Tarasenko took a sharp-angle shot that Kuemper stopped but Robert Thomas pounced on the rebound to tie the game with 56 seconds remaining. Just a resilient group of guys, got down and didn't want the season to be over.
