Stanley Cup playoffs 2022 - New York Rangers relish 'added ... (ESPN)

After a testy ending to Game 3, New York coach Gerard Gallant said his team plays better when it's angry, and enforcer Ryan Reaves agrees.

"I don't want to say anything stupid here," he said, drawing a laugh. "I like to see our guys get a little pissed off once in a while," he said. "You don't want to be taking stupid penalties in a series that's this tight. I think we do well with that." "I'm sure [our] guys aren't going to shy away from finishing checks on those guys. "I think our team thrives on that. "I just think it's going to [happen] in the playoffs, when you play the same team over and over again," Reaves said. "He really said that?" "I wish I would have seen that. I wish I would have grabbed him first." Our guys know we have him there." We've got the guy that can handle all their guys if we want to."

3 Keys: Hurricanes at Rangers, Game 4 of Eastern Second Round (NHL.com)

The New York Rangers have an opportunity to come back from being two games down for the second time in as many rounds when they play Game 4 of the Eastern ...

The Rangers scored a power-play goal and the Hurricanes were 0-for-3 with the man-advantage in Game 3. "Every team wants to start with the puck, but it's always what happens after, winning it and losing it, that's important." Andersen took part in practice Monday for the first time since the goalie was injured April 16. Carolina has won 58.1 percent of face-offs during the series. That happened in Game 3, but goalie Igor Shesterkin was there to be the difference maker. The Hurricanes are 6-3 all time when leading a best-of-7 series 2-1, including 5-2 when starting at home. He also took part in the morning skate Tuesday, sharing a net with Kochetkov, the expected backup. So that's part of putting a bigger guy there. I mean, he's world-class and that's part of it. "Obviously special teams have not been a huge positive for us thus far," Hurricanes defenseman Ian Cole said. I like the way we battle back. Carolina is 68.4 percent (13-for-19) on the penalty kill and 5.3 percent (1-for-19) with a shorthanded goal against on the power play on the road in the playoffs.

But if you’re going out there and hold them to just a few shots when you’re out there, keeping them to the perimeter, that’s what I want to do night in and night out.” If the Rangers can continue to stifle the Hurricanes’ team game and get their power play going, that could prove to be the difference in this series. There wasn’t a whole lot of scoring chances and I mentioned that after the games. They play a very north-south game where we got to get pucks in and it’s not as freewheeling as it was in that Pittsburgh series. There hasn’t been much open ice for either the Rangers or the Hurricanes through the first three games. One of the major similarities between the Penguins and the Hurricanes, however, is that they’re both high-volume shooting clubs.

Hurricanes-Rangers Game 4: Carolina trails New York, 4-1, in the ... (Raleigh News & Observer)

What's the Rangers-Hurricanes score? Who's winning Carolina Hurricanes at New York Rangers in Game 4 of the second round of the NHL playoffs, ...

Lorentz gets 2-5-10, Trouba just the 5 for fighting, and the Canes will be shorthanded. Devin Berg and Brad Kovachik are the linesmen. Best bet for the Canes to do at this point is reset after that first period and try to play their own game. Hurricanes on the board: Canes on the board. The rough stuff has surfaced: Jacob Trouba clobbers Max Domi, elbow to head, and Steven Lorentz responds by getting Trouba into a fight. In his best Mark Messier impression, fitting given the venue, Ian Cole insisted Tuesday morning that “We’re going to win this series,” before later qualifying that: “There are no guarantees.” Canes limp into the break: Rangers still getting the better of play here as the first period comes to an end. Great pass from Andrew Copp to set him up in the right circle. Also, Necas clangs the post on a shot Shesterkin never saw. Huge save to keep it 3-1, still a tough slog for Carolina but way more reasonable with the way its playing than 4-1. If the Clemson-North Carolina game at ACC baseball tournament game runs long on Bally Sports — and what are the odds of that? Necas DID have one golden chance on a one-timer, and misfired.

Tyler Motte adding key element to Rangers 4th line: 'He's been one ... (The Athletic)

Acquired from the Canucks at the trade deadline, the "hard-working little guy" has helped the Rangers' bottom six keep up in the postseason.

The question follows then: Can he be a part of what’s to come with the Rangers? They already have Goodrow. Copp might be a player Drury decides to try to re-sign. Motte has done what he did in Vancouver: elevate the play of his linemates. ESPN’s Sean McDonough relayed a conversation he had with Drury prior to Game 1 against Carolina on the air Wednesday, saying: “(Drury) said he had no idea how good Motte was. The Rangers didn’t seem like a prime destination, given their need for help further up the forward depth chart, but Chris Drury sent a fourth-round pick to the Canucks on deadline day two months ago and added Motte to the stable of acquisitions. He followed Copp and Trouba to the University of Michigan after being selected 121st overall by Chicago in the 2013 draft. Motte’s return after missing a month following a hit from Pittsburgh’s Anthony Angello was huge also because Goodrow, the player Gallant compared him to, had been out since Game 1 with what’s believed to be a broken foot. “Maybe considered a little undersized, but one of the hardest workers around. But since his return from injury in Game 6 of the first round against the Penguins, he’s provided plenty of juice in his limited role — so much so that (small sample size alert) he leads the Rangers in expected-goals percentage in the postseason at 57.82 percent. Like (Goodrow). They’re the same type of player.” Motte has been doing that for a few years now. Motte’s presence has also allowed Gallant to avoid using his top-six forwards so heavily on the penalty kill. His presence allows Gerard Gallant to use his fourth line deeper into games, or at least parts of it when he can send Motte, Kevin Rooney and another forward besides Ryan Reaves over the boards to preserve a lead.

He had eight points in the first five games against Boston, but has not had a point in the last five games and he has been minus three in this series. It’s time for the Rangers to come up with a big night scoring so let’s root them on. ESPN will be televising the Calgary Edmonton with an 930pm EST start time so they will dump out of Rangers coverage pretty quickly. The power play finally got off the ground in the last game and if the Blueshirts can get some PP time, they could take advantage. One interesting element was the Rangers made some subtle changes in their power play strategy after going 0-4 in Game Two and it paid off. The Zibanejad line did well with Filip Chytil on the right wing, but the second line didn’t do much with Lafrenière again moved to the right wing.

Jacob Trouba unloaded a crushing blow that sent Madison Square Garden into a frenzy. The Rangers defeated the Hurricanes 4-1 to tie the series.

Zibanejad swooped in to clean it up and get the ever-important third goal. The Rangers' netminder was excellent once again. The Hurricanes continued to pressure and push for scoring chances, as is their reputation. Steven Lorentz charged him for a fight that further electrified MSG and earned him a 10-minute major. The Vatrano goal at the 13:31 mark set off a series of events that worked in the Rangers' favor. Was it merely a coincidence that Domi was at the center of the previous game's shenanigans?

It was only 5-for-43 in the playoffs prior to Game 4 where the issues persisted. Carolina was relatively sloppy while a man down and a turnover in their own end led to a missed opportunity to clear the zone. Copp and Vatrano, both acquired in March trades, were named first and third stars of the game, respectively. Instead of merely taking Trouba’s number, Lorentz immediately came to the defence of his teammate and dropped the mitts with Trouba in a rare playoff scrap. He did mention he thought Trouba should've been given a cross-checking minor for getting his stick up on Lorentz prior to the brief punch-up. Whistles were few and far in between during a frenetic first half of the opening period as both teams traded chances.

Now the Blueshirts have to win a game in the Hurricanes' fortress in Raleigh. It would be foolish to bet against them. Larry Brooks. More From: ...

The Hurricanes are not shriveling like they were in the pool. Fox, who has elevated his play in the postseason, had a superb night on which he played 10:45 in the first, 9:27 in the second and 26:46 for the night. Zibanejad went to the net to bang home a loose puck that slithered through Raanta to make it 3-0 at 16:48 of the second. They had lulls in both the second and third periods in this one. Momentum, too, was generated when Jacob Trouba wiped out Max Domi along the boards at 11:38 of what was a scoreless game played for the most part at a frantic pace. There was an equally stunning stop 2:00 into the second, Shesterkin somehow flashing the right pad to deny Teuvo Teravainen right out in front to maintain a 2-0 lead.

Rangers knot series at 2 games apiece with 4-1 win (Bluelinestation.com)

The expected confrontation between Ryan Reaves and Max Domi didn't happen until the last 10 seconds of the game, and at that it was relatively uneventful.

The very fact that the games were so close was one reason why the Blueshirts were never in danger of being out of the picture. With the Rangers on their heels a bit and back to the dump and defend play that hurt them in Game One, Gallant called Andrew Copp’s goal to restore the three goal lead “huge.” After Jacob Trouba laid out Domi with a big hit, he was attacked by Steven Lorentz who ended up with the instigator penalty and a misconduct. He did say that the team sat back after getting ahead 3-0 and focused on protecting the lead, something he does not want to see. The teams followed the script with all the games won by the home team in this series. That means they will play at least one more game this season at the Garden.

The Rangers had been doing an excellent job in front of their net for a majority of the evening, but Carolina was eventually able to capitalize on a chance in close. Great puck tracking by Andrew Copp kept the play alive for a second time, and he found the open lane up top to Ryan Lindgren. With plenty of ice in front of him, Lindgren stepped into a shooting lane and let a shot fly on goal. Mika Zibanejad was able to collect the puck as he crossed the blue line, and made a drop pass to the trailing Ryan Lindgren. Lindgren had plenty of space once again, and was able to step into a heavy wrist shot that gave Raanta some trouble. Of course, Adam Fox started the entire play with a great escape pass between the stick of Vincent Trocheck to create the space for Andrew Copp. The Hurricanes left the entire lower right side of the ice wide open, and it didn’t take Copp long to find the open lane. They were hard on the forecheck, made the most of their opportunities, and gave Carolina a taste of their own medicine as the buzzer sounded. The New York Rangers made the most of the previous two games on home ice, and will head back to Carolina with more than a chance to take control of the series.

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Rangers got the kind of strong, all-around effort from the start they needed and stormed past the Carolina Hurricanes.

Hurricanes-Rangers Vibe Check: New York holding pace better than ... (Sportsnet.ca)

The Hurricanes-Rangers series is the only one that isn't facing elimination so let's take breakdown four keys to this series through four games.

Lindgren can separate opponents from the puck with his physical play or stick, while Fox uses his stick and smart positioning to limit plays against. Shot attempts were 15-14 in New York’s favour with them deployed, but how they worked to limit quality chances against is what really stood out. As much as they’re testing Shesterkin with shot volume, the Rangers are doing their best to keep their quality shot generation as even as possible. And the league knows what the reigning Norris Trophy winner can do with the puck on his stick. That’s giving New York a lot to work with and they’re doing their best to block passes and shots at a high rate to limit quality chances or cycle shots. Carolina did play well at Madison Square Garden, especially in Game 3, but didn’t have the results to show for it. That put even more pressure on K’Andre Miller and Jacob Trouba against an elite trio in Pittsburgh, led by Sidney Crosby. Although one player shouldn’t make or break a blue line, when depth is an issue, it can throw everything out of sorts. But the Rangers are holding pace better than anticipated, and that’s a reason this series is tied. The Rangers may have had some results in those situations thanks to their finishing talent and saving, but below the surface painted a more concerning picture. In 10 total playoff games, he now has a .931 save percentage and GSAx of 3.9. In total through 11 games, he has a .925 save percentage and GSAx of +7. New York managed to clean up play in its own zone post-deadline and did improve offensively.

Barclay Goodrow is making strides back from a believed fractured foot suffered in Game 1 of the NHL Playoffs against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

As the playoffs get a bit nastier, it is nice to have his physical presence in the lineup. With just two points in the playoffs, he is a prime candidate to give way to the defensively more responsible Goodrow. Kaapo Kakko: The 21 year-old has been excellent in these playoffs from the standpoint of being strong with the puck down low and maintaining zone time. Let’s start with the most likely candidate, a young Finn selected second overall in 2019. “He’s not going to start the first couple of games but we’ll see how it goes.” That announcement indicated the seriousness of the injury.
