Trump to speak at NRA meeting in Texas days after school shooting (The Washington Post)

Former president Donald Trump is scheduled to headline a forum at the National Rifle Association's annual meeting in Houston this Friday — about a four-hour ...

He faced significant resistance from the NRA and Republicans and soon abandoned the ideas. The NRA, established in 1871, boasts more than 5 million members. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) went viral online after he gave a speech in the Senate on Tuesday night pleading with his colleagues to put politics aside and work together to stop mass shootings. Trump has embraced the gun lobby, though after the Parkland high school shooting in 2018, he briefly expressed support for background checks for gun purchases and greater police power to seize guns from mentally disturbed people. Sen. John Cornyn (R) of Texas was also scheduled to speak but pulled out before the shooting for personal reasons requiring him to be in Washington on Friday, a spokesman said. “Why are we here if not to try and make sure fewer schools and fewer communities go through what Sandy Hook has gone through, what Uvalde is going through,” he said.

NRA Bans Firearms During Donald Trump's Speech at Texas Event (Newsweek)

The National Rifle Association will hold its conference in Houston this week, just days after 19 children and two adults were killed at Robb Elementary.

"You see Democrats and a lot of folks in the media whose immediate solution is to try to restrict the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens. It remains the deadliest mass shooting at an elementary school in U.S. history. The NRA said the hall was under the jurisdiction of the United States Secret Service as Trump would be speaking during the event. In a notice, the NRA said firearms, toy guns and "weapons of any kind" would not be allowed inside the hall. But a shadow has been cast over the conference after 19 children and two adults were fatally shot at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday. On its website, the pro-gun organization declared that people would not be able to bring their firearms into the General Assembly Hall during its upcoming Annual Leadership Forum in Houston on Friday, May 27.

Lobbying by gun rights groups hit a spending record in 2021. They ... (Fortune)

Gun rights groups, like the NRA and Gun Owners of America, spent $15.8 million on lobbying last year—and another $2 million in the first quarter of 2022.

Here’s how the list of politicians who have benefited from gun rights lobbying stands, minus 2021 contributions. That said, Texas Senator Ted Cruz has been the biggest beneficiary of those groups when it comes to campaign spending. Spending on House and Senate races generally pales in comparison to the amount these groups spend on presidential and gubernatorial elections. Gun control advocates have spent just $30 million since 1998. President Joe Biden, speaking Tuesday night, called for limits on the sale of powerful weapons. Lobbying spending by those groups set a new record in 2021, according to a report from OpenSecrets. Gun rights groups spend $15.8 million on lobbying last year, compared to just $2.9 million in lobbying from gun control groups.

The NRA Is Banning Guns for Trump's Appearance at Its Upcoming ... (Jezebel)

The organization that lobbies for laws that make it easy for anyone to carry a gun does not want anyone carrying a gun to their own event, oddly.

If the NRA really believe guns were not the problem, they would allow anyone to carry them at their own fucking events. Donald Trump is scheduled to speak at their “leadership forum,” where guns will not be allowed. Seems to me like a true, gun-toting American wouldn’t let the Secret Service bully their precious gun rights—guns don’t kill people, people kill people—but what do I know?

The NRA held the conference despite recordings released years later showing NRA officials were shaken by the shooting while also discussing alternatives to the conference. Cruz also tweeted Tuesday that he was praying for the families, among many other reactions from Texas officials. Their expected appearance comes after 14 students and one teacher were killed by an 18-year-old suspected shooter Salvador Ramos at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde on Tuesday, May 24.

Efforts by lawmakers to change U.S. gun policies in any significant way have consistently faced roadblocks from Republicans and the influence of outside groups such as the NRA. And you can’t pray and send condolences on one day and then be going and championing guns on the next. Trump is set to headline a "leadership forum" on Friday where audience members will not be allowed to carry guns. "As far as future plans are concerned, I'm living moment to moment right now," Abbott said. That’s wrong.” The greater question, Turner said, is why Texas politicians still plan to speak there after the shooting in Uvalde. Abbott and Cruz are scheduled to address a leadership forum sponsored by the NRA’s lobbying arm. Texas politicians and former President Donald Trump are scheduled to attend the National Rifle Association's annual convention over the weekend in Houston days after a mass shooting at an elementary school that killed at least 21 people.

A National Rifle Association rally and concert will proceed in Houston this weekend, despite the Uvalde school shooting three days earlier.

Rep for Trump and Governor Abbott did not immediately confirm whether the former president and the governor will continue with plans to speak at the event. “He now has to be in D.C. for personal reasons on Friday.” As of Wednesday afternoon, the gun-lobbyist organization’s annual meeting was still scheduled to take place at the city’s George R. Brown Convention Center from Friday to Sunday, according to its website. “Join us as we celebrate the NRA’s 150th anniversary over Memorial Day weekend,” trumpets a message on the not-for-profit organization’s website and over its phone lines. But history suggests the NRA will neither alter its convention plans nor waver from its broad opposition to gun-control measures. After Columbine, concerns that calling off the NRA’s annual meeting would be tantamount to accepting blame for the shooting prevailed, and the group went ahead with convening in Denver, Colorado, roughly 10 miles from the site of the violence that had left 13 dead and more than 20 injured. The NRA’s annual meeting in Houston is scheduled for May 27-29, kicking off just two days after a gunman killed 19 children and 2 adults at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.

The suspected shooter was an 18-year-old who may have been wielding both a handgun and a rifle and may have worn protective gear. He was also killed Tuesday. As we gather in Houston, we will reflect on these events, pray for the victims, recognize our patriotic members, and pledge to redouble our commitment to making our schools secure," the NRA said. "Our deepest sympathies are with the families and victims involved in this horrific and evil crime," the NRA said in a statement Wednesday afternoon. "In the meantime, we all continue to pray for the victims, their families, and for our entire nation — we are all in this together!" Trump wrote on social media Wednesday that he will keep his "longtime commitment to speak in Texas at the NRA Convention," because the U.S. needs "real solutions and real leadership in this moment, not politicians and partisanship." Former President Donald Trump and other prominent Republicans still plan to speak at the National Rifle Association's annual meeting in Texas on Friday, days after a gunman killed 19 children and two adults at an elementary school in the state.

The public is still reeling from the brutal killing at a small-town elementary school, the first major event of this kind in Texas since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020. “Although an investigation is underway and facts are still emerging, we recognize this was the act of a lone, deranged criminal,” the statement read. In recent years, the Legislature has responded to mass shootings by providing money to research mental health problems, which they say is a key factor in the killings. “America needs real solutions and real leadership in this moment, not politicians and partisanship,” Trump said in a statement. After the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, the NRA opted to scale down its convention which was scheduled to happen days later and a few miles away. Texas’ gun culture is rooted in many of the state’s responses to mass shootings. “As far as future plans are concerned, listen, I’m living moment-to-moment right now,” he said when asked about the convention during a news conference updating the public on the shooting. Police eventually found the shooter with three gunshot wounds, including a self-inflicted one to the head. The bill had been beaten back many times before because of public safety concerns. The speaking engagement leaves Texas Republicans in a tricky political situation. After a shooting at an El Paso Walmart in 2019 that killed 23 people, Patrick, a staunch ally of the NRA, appeared ready to take on the gun rights group, saying he was “willing to take an arrow” to require background checks for stranger-to-stranger gun sales. “That’s why I will keep my longtime commitment to speak in Texas at the NRA Convention and deliver an important address to America. In the meantime, we all continue to pray for the victims, their families and our entire nation – we are all in this together.”
