Does Walmart really sell "Juneteenth"-flavored ice cream? White-owned corporations trademarking and commodifying Black culture is nothing new.

But, nah—white America made Juneteenth a federal holiday but buried the “What’s in it for us?” part in the fine print. But what did we really think was going to happen once Juneteenth went federal? There’s a reason Black people had two distinct and opposing reactions to Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday last year.

There were people offended by Walmart's icy take on Juneteenth, as well as those who didn't understand the fuss. So how bad was it, really?

How is the significant delay of freedom of Black people in Galveston (a truly egregious thing that lasted for more than two years) and slavery as a whole being acknowledged by some T-shirts and dairy products from a retail corporation? I can see both sides of the coin: why a Walmart ice cream for Juneteenth would come off as tacky but also why the uproar over it could also be exhausting. One of the good things about Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday, which, after years of work officially happened last June, is that it brings attention to the story behind the celebration.
