PGA Championship 2022: How Will Zalatoris handled a wild rules ... (GolfDigest.com)

Will Zalatoris juggled a variety of rules questions to make an all-world bogey during the final round at Southern Hills.

Zalatoris didn’t even seem to think about this, instead taking out a wedge and hitting the ball off the cart path from the seam. Zalatoris found the side door, the ball falling in for his 4. Once again he was able to move his ball, this time one clublength from where the TIO came into play (to define a relief area that was clear of the obstruction). Then he got another clublength from that area to make his drop. Same with the second, so he placed the ball where it landed, sitting it on the cart path. Under Rule 19.2c, Zalatoris would add a shot to his score but was entitled to two club-lengths of relief no nearer the hole. Zalatoris’ ball did not roll through the bushes and out of bounds, but was stuck inside the bushes, making it impossible for him to take a swing.

Justin Thomas won the PGA Championship for the second time in his career, beating Will Zalatoris in a playoff on Sunday.

Then I thought I was nervous on the third day but the fourth day was terrible. Then I thought I was nervous the second day. He has now finished runner-up in two majors; he finished a stroke behind Hideki Matsuyama in the 2021 Masters. I thought I was nervous the first day. I just hit in the water. After a penalty drop, he left his uphill third shot left of the green and needed three more shots to make a double-bogey 6 and miss the playoff by one shot.

Justin Thomas Wins PGA Championship in Playoff Over Will Zalatoris (Sports Illustrated)

Thomas, also the 2017 PGA winner, was seven shots down to start Sunday and shot 67 to make the playoff after 54-hole leader Mito Pereira stumbled to 75.

After a penalty drop, his 190-yard third shot sailed left of the green, then a chip shot ran through the green and two shots later he had a crushing double-bogey 6 to miss the playoff. Thomas hit his drive in the right rough and laid up with his second shot, but wedged it close and made the putt. Zalatoris was on the green in two and two-putted for his birdie. Thomas pulled ahead by one shot for good on the second playoff hole, the drivable 302-yard par-4 17th. "I guess you have so much pressure in your body, you don't even know what you're doing. I was asked early in the week what lead is safe, I said 'no lead.' I just stayed patient and found myself in a playoff."

Will Zalatoris just made the best, most confusing bogey save ever at ... (Golf.com)

There will be many bogey saves at the PGA Championship, but Will Zalatoris' miraculous bogey from the cart path tops them all.

He surveyed his bogey putt for a few minutes more, then watched as it side-doored into the hole. But the TIO relief brought with it another issue: with his updated drop location, Zalatoris was now in the middle of the cart path. He chose the cart path, and after 14 minutes of intense discussion, finally lined up for his shot. He approached the scene and lowered himself to the ground, peeking underneath the canopy of leaves. Zalatoris’ 4 on the par-3 6th had a little bit of everything: an airmailed iron off the tee, an impossibly long rules discussion, a chip shot off a cart path and, eventually, a 12-foot bogey make that kept his tournament hopes alive. The situation began when Zalatoris, then eight under and tied for the tournament lead, knocked his tee shot through the green on the par-3 6th.

Then I thought I was nervous on the third day but the fourth day was terrible. Then I thought I was nervous the second day. I thought I was nervous the first day. I think yesterday (third-round 73) was really the day that looking back on it, I was pretty frustrated with. But if you hit the fairways you can make birdies, and I stayed so patient, I just couldn’t believe I found myself in a playoff.” Looking for his first PGA Tour title, Zalatoris has now finished runner-up in two majors; he finished a stroke behind Hideki Matsuyama in the 2021 Masters. He has five top 10s in eight starts in majors. But if you hit the fairways you can make birdies, and I stayed so patient, I just couldn’t believe I found myself in a playoff.” I just hit in the water. I definitely crossed one off the list; I’ve never won a tournament shanking a ball on Sunday, so that was a first, and man, I would really like it to be a last. “It’s funny, I was asked earlier in the week about what lead is safe, and I said, no lead.

Justin Thomas outlasts Will Zalatoris in 3-hole playoff to win second ... (ESPN)

Justin Thomas matched a PGA Championship record on Sunday when he rallied from a seven-shot deficit at Southern Hills, and then he saved his most exquisite ...

In eight majors at Southern Hills, it was first time a player rallied from any margin to win, and it was only the second playoff. Rory McIlroy made a brief run with four straight birdies on the front nine, putting him at 4-under par for the tournament. Zalatoris looked like he had thrown away his chances for a first major -- and first PGA Tour victory -- when he three-putted from just outside 20 feet on the 16th hole. He edged closer with an 18-foot birdie on the next hole. It started with an improbable birdie putt from just short of the green to a back pin on the par-3 11th. He was in the longest drought since his first PGA Tour title. Zalatoris, whose must-make 8-footers for birdie and par on the final two holes of regulation got him into the playoff with a 71, couldn't deliver in overtime. He also won in a playoff over Tom Watson and Jerry Pate. Just like his first PGA title at Quail Hollow in 2017, the signature shot for Thomas came on the 17th hole. Since winning his first PGA Tour title during the 2015-16 season, Thomas' 15 wins are tied with Dustin Johnson for the most of any player. "I was asked early in the week what lead is safe and I said, 'No lead,''' Thomas said. Thomas hit a shank on the sixth hole.

2022 PGA Championship leaderboard, winner: Justin Thomas ... (CBSSports.com)

Thomas has now won two of the last six PGA Championships for his pair of major titles.

- Hole 3 (par-4 18th): Both men made it on the green in two, though Zalatoris' approach slid down a ridge to put him further from the hole. - Hole 2 (par-4 17th): Thomas drove the green off the tee in spectacular fashion, while Zalatoris attempted the same only to fortunately land just feet from a greenside bunker. Zalatoris looked to have bested J.T. by making it on the green in two but was forced to tap in for birdie after a long eagle putt slid wide left. He eventually finished with a double bogey, not only giving away his potential victory but opening the door for Thomas and Zalatoris to compete in a playoff for the Wanamaker. The tournament was surprise 54-hole leader Mito Pereira's to lose on Sunday as the 27-year-old Chilean opened the day with a three-stroke advantage on the field and either shared the lead or held it outright for every hole but his last. Thomas began his day at 2 under and roared back with a 3-under 67 in Round 4 that included a bogey-free 3-under 32 on the back nine.

TULSA, Okla. – A bogey save from a cart path, an up-and-down from a penalty area and a missed 4-footer on the 70th hole. Will Zalatoris overcame all of it ...

The trio grew up together in Dallas, and each went on to win the U.S. Junior Amateur. Zalatoris has had his chances. He bogeyed the next hole, as well, and was in trouble after his tee shot on the long, par-3 eighth hole bounded into the penalty area. Then his tee shot on the sixth hole caught a gust and bounded into the bushes that line the course. Short putts are the weakness for one of the TOUR’s best ball strikers, but Zalatoris made clutch putts on the final two holes. He now has five top-10s in his last seven major appearances, including a pair of runners-up. TULSA, Okla. – A bogey save from a cart path, an up-and-down from a penalty area and a missed 4-footer on the 70th hole.
