Once a year, NASCAR's biggest stars come together to put on an event unlike anything else in motorsports, the All Star Race. This weekend, the NASCAR Cup Series ...
With this in conjunction with the stacked roster of talent competing for the coveted million dollars, this year’s All Star race is a can’t miss event. The winner of Stage One will start first, the Stage Two winner will start second, and the Stage Three winner will finish third, so long as they manage to finish 15th or better in the stages following their victory. With all the nuance to the format, it's fair to say NASCAR has carefully crafted a race that constantly excites and tests driver’s patience. During the stage, NASCAR has announced that if "no natural caution occurs between lap 15-25 of the final stage, NASCAR will call a competition caution." Behind each driver is a story of triumph and tribulations that have led them to the sport’s biggest stage. * One other name to watch for is Ross Chastain. This is his second All-Star Race start but the speed he’s shown this year has the entire Cup Series garage taking notice. * Fan favorite Bubba Wallace is no stranger to the All-Star Race, but this is the first year he enters the weekend locked in to the main event. A win like this could possibly propel him into full Cup Series stardom and he’s proven he has the speed to do it. * Kyle Larson is the defending winner of the event, and the only driver to win the All-Star race at Texas Motor Speedway. He dominated last years race, much like he dominated most of the season. He has made the race in the past via the fan vote and the All-Star Open, but his win at Talladega last fall secured him a place in the big show for the first time in his career. Although he is the betting favorite to win the race, the new car has brought far more parity at intermediate tracks than fans saw last year. The All Star Race is the one weekend during the season where drivers can forget about points and solely place their focus on winning.

Now, Chastain has been fast on longer runs this season compared to short ones, so I really don’t expect him to win one of the first three stages. Chastain has not been a great qualifier this season, so starting so close to the front will be a huge benefit, especially for all the reasons I laid out above for Busch. Put it all together and we have a driver who has been fast on this track type all season, starting from the pole in a very short race where track position will not only be important to stay up front but also serve as a reward for stage winners. For example, the winner of Stage 1 will start first in Stage 4, the winner of Stage 2 will start second, and the winner of Stage 3 will start third. So even if Busch can’t find a way to earn a win in the first three stages, the No. 18 pit crew has been the best as of late, so they’ll have another chance to earn a top-four starting spot in the final stage by banging out a quick stop at end of Stage 2. Additionally, at the end of Stage 2, there will be a mandatory four-tire pit stop, and the team with the fastest stop will automatically start fourth in the final stage (assuming they finish 15th or better in Stage 3).

I thought our No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Chevy was surprisingly pretty good for me and Texas (Motor Speedway), so I was pretty excited about it; looking forward to getting going and seeing what we had here towards the end. As Busch attempted to go low to get out of the way, Ross Chastain miscalculated where Busch's car was going to go and ran into the left rear of Busch's car at nearly full speed. With only one truly useable groove at Texas, passing was at a premium throughout the night and much of the race was run with the field spread out as green flag runs progressed. While leading the race, Kyle Busch had a right rear tire go down coming off of Turn 4, and slowed well off the pace on the front straightaway as he tried to get out of the narrow racing groove and out of harm's way. Because we wouldn't have allowed him to start if it was just laying down on the door." Belonging to the latter category was Denny Hamlin, who called out the window net situation for being patently unsafe and felt NASCAR should have black-flagged Blaney. Blaney attempted to put his window net back up, but fastening and securing the window net is not easily done from the driver's seat. As Ryan Blaney came off Turn 4 for the final time to take the checkered flag, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. slid up the track and hit the wall coming out of Turn 2. After the caution flag came out as he was coming to the checkered flag, Ryan Blaney had to hold off Denny Hamlin and teammate Austin Cindric on an overtime restart. Speaking to the media, NASCAR senior vice president of competition Scott Miller admitted fault on NASCAR's behalf, explaining that they prematurely called the final caution. The caution triggered a stipulation in the All-Star Race rules stating that the race must finish under green no matter what, necessitating the field be bunched back up for an Overtime restart. Not realizing the race was not yet over, Blaney began taking his window net down in celebration, only for his crew to inform him that there would be another restart. Just ask Ryan Blaney. For a moment, he thought he had taken the checkered flag and claimed his first All-Star million dollar victory.

Petty GMS Motorsports’ Erik Jones secured an All-Star berth through an online vote by fans; he crashed in the final stage and finished 20th. “Felt like the driver of the 1 car chose the wrong lane to go,” Chastain said, managing a smile as he left the infield care center. Ross Chastain, who was running second at the time guessed wrong on which lane Busch would slow into and hit him on the left side, slid up the track and into Chase Elliott‘s No.9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet before hitting the wall. His 84 laps led was most in the field, and he won Stage 3. Last year’s All-Star Race winner, Kyle Larson, was eliminated only 11 laps into the second stage when his No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet blew a right-front tire, sending him hard into the wall. “It was about to be real bad for us, I thought the race was over,” Blaney said. As the cars made laps on the 1.5-mile track preparing for the overtime restart, Blaney could be seen trying to refasten the driver’s side safety net with one hand, steering the car under caution with the other. “Everyone thought the race was over. Blaney becomes the 26th different winner -- and fourth Team Penske driver -- in the All-Star Race's 38-year history.
And it was also Team Penske’s fourth win in the all-star event, all by different drivers. That was against the rules and Blaney found himself with a predicament: normally, it’s a crew member who locks the window net into place on pit road. “Everyone thought the race was over, I already had my window net down. “This is cool,” Blaney said with a big smile. If the yellow had come out in a points-paying race on the final lap, Blaney would have automatically won under caution. Blaney was roughly less than 200 feet from taking the checkered flag when Stenhouse's incident occurred -- but by the time the caution lights went on, it appeared Blaney was already across the finish line.

Ryan Blaney had to go two extra laps after thinking he had won the All-Star race. NASCAR said it “probably prematurely called” a final yellow flag.

Despite being winless in points-paying races this season, Ryan Blaney edged out Denny Hamlin in overtime to win $1000000 in the 2022 NASCAR All-Star Race.
However, the last two All-Star Races were won by the eventual champion, so if Blaney capitalizes this year, there might be an argument that a trend is forming in that regard. However, the All-Star Race may give teams an idea of what they have come playoff season. For the first time since 2013, the red flag was displayed during the All-Star Race to clean up the crash. For the teams, Charlotte presents an opportunity to compete in NASCAR’s backyard in front of everyone who stays back at the shop from week-to-week. An additional problem was that Blaney had removed his window net, thinking that the race was over. All Busch needed to do was finish inside the top 15 and on the lead lap in every subsequent stage. That opened the door for stage two winner Austin Cindric to claim the pole for the final stage. Defending All-Star Race winner Kyle Larson finished dead last after blowing a right front tire and sliding head on into the turn 4 wall on lap 37. Aside from Suarez, the other Open transfers produced mixed results in the All-Star Race. Segment two winner Chris Buescher had a quiet, consistent performance, running in the upper mid-pack for most of the event. Goodyear has continued to deflect the blame, but when will Goodyear themselves step in and say enough is enough after yet another race with tire issues? Other times, it might just be the track itself that proves it’s time to go back to the drawing board and find a new compound that works. Daniel Suarez put on a show from the start of the night, all the way up through the final lap.
Check out the full results after Ryan Blaney's All-Star Race victory Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway, where he held off Denny Hamlin and Austin Cindric.
Ryan Blaney held off Denny Hamlin on an overtime restart - that shouldn't have happened - to win his first career NASCAR All-Star Race at Texas.
The gimmicks were kept lower than years past, the pit crew competition made a return – kind of – and in the end, there was indeed passing in the midfield. The All-Star race is meant to be the site of beating and banging as well as side-by-side, white knuckle racing. Each year the annual exhibition event was a sure thing to be an action-packed wild night of racing, tempers, and rivalries for the sake of winning a million dollars. All the way up the pace laps of the event, that anticipation was building again. Even further, the incident in question was not caution flag worthy, meaning the official that decided to push the caution light button jumped the gun because he or she was looking for any reason to have a late race restart. So, with that being said, what is the point of throwing the yellow if the race is about to end anyway? The idea of the caution flag is, and always has been, to slow the cars down to safe speed in the event of an on-track accident to prevent any further accidents. It certainly can’t be an easy position to take, and there is so much pressure to make the right call as any incorrect move will upset millions of race fans. Or would they black flag him and force him to come to pit road and restart him at the rear? A surprised Blaney was told that there would be an overtime attempt, and indeed the race was not yet over. Even more recently, the North Carolinian has been in somewhat of a slump, as he has not finished in the top 10 since the dirt race at Bristol Motor Speedway. In the final stage that was 50 laps, Blaney cleared his Team Penske stablemate Cindric to take the lead and did not look back.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Ryan Blaney is talking about framing the window net from his No. 12 Ford, the one he somehow got secured enough to run two extra ...
“I lined up behind him on that last restart and gave him the best push possible.” The No. 12 crew was already celebrating the victory in the pits and Blaney had lowered the window net on the backstretch. It wasn't until on the backstretch just before the restart, when he clearly had both hands on the wheel and the net was up, that NASCAR determined he was good to go. "But it’s just a product of running second compared to winning,” Blaney said. “Obviously Ryan Blaney thought he won the race,” said Scott Miller, NASCAR’s senior VP for competition. Even runner-up Denny Hamlin agreed to that, but was frustrated that Blaney wasn't black-flagged for dropping his window net when initially thinking that Sunday night's race was over.
Ryan Blaney took home the $1 million check, but there was plenty of fallout in the aftermath of the NASCAR All-Star Race at Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday.
Kyle Larson — Larson was running second in the second stage when his right front tire when flat at the exit of Turn 4, sending the No. 5 Chevrolet hard into the outside wall. Kyle Busch — Busch had led each of the opening 47 laps before a right rear tire failed. NASCAR — While Blaney is a popular winner for the sport, fans will be centered on how the ending of the All-Star Race was officiated. Austin Cindric — Third place in a race that doesn’t pay any points may seem fairly worthless, but Cindric had a great showing in his inaugural All-Star appearance. With a questionably secured window net, Blaney fended off Denny Hamlin and Austin Cindric in overtime to claim the $1 million check in the exhibition race, his first All-Star win in six tries. Blaney is still looking for his first points win of 2022.

“We all watched and we saw (Stenhouse’s) car and mentioned the car against the wall, riding the wall down the back straightaway,” Miller told reporters after the race. And that’s a safety issue that, per the rules, can force a driver to get it fixed properly. Have you seen some of the tweets and videos and such from the ending of the 2022 NASCAR All-Star Race and wondered what the heck happened?
