Manchester United: 3 players to blame for disappointing season in ... (ClutchPoints)

The three Manchester United players to blame for their struggles this year, include Jadon Sancho, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Harry Maguire.

Mistake after mistake has left Maguire in an unfavorable position with the club, and his status as team captain makes it all the easier to point the finger in his direction following a defeat. With 59 points on the season, Manchester United will finish in sixth place and is bound for the Europa League once again. For a club expected to be at the forefront of the Premier League title race each season, finishing outside of Champions League qualification is a disastrous failure on the part of the club.

Wilfried Zaha strike for Crystal Palace sinks woeful Manchester United (The Guardian)

Sent out early for the second half by Rangnick, powering down the touchline with the face of a man looking forward to all this being someone else’s problem, United stepped up their efforts a tad. Almost immediately, United’s midfield and defence offered little resistance as Zaha surged into the box and forced a save from David De Gea, who soon after had to do the same to stop Jeffrey Schlupp. It took a burst from Zaha to focus the home fans on the action, his pass narrowly failing to reach Odsonne Eduoard. Cristiano Ronaldo had not traveled to south London, and the given explanation of a recurring hip problem did little to quell discussion over where his future may lie. Manchester United’s worst season in 30 years of the Premier League ended with a typical whimper. After a season concluded with a goal difference of zero and some excruciatingly poor performances, Selhurst Park a case in point, playing any form of European football next season feels a like wholly undeserved bonus.

Manchester United: Inside Ralf Rangnick's spell as interim manager (The Athletic)

Rangnick's spell in charge never got off the ground, beset by indecision, problems with backroom staff and a disillusioned squad.

For the trip to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League round of 16 match in February, arguably the most important game of the campaign, Rangnick deliberated over which player to pick at right-back until a few hours before kick-off. Some, for instance, disagreed with him throwing on Hannibal Mejbri in the closing minutes at Anfield, feeling it did not give the 19-year-old chance to show his skills on the ball. United had granted Bailly an early departure to prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations but he was told to return to Carrington. Bailly then returned late from the tournament and was injured, too. Martial scored a “worldie” goal in training before United faced Villa in the FA Cup and was set to play, but he then complained of gastroenteritis. Club staff tried to steer him to focusing on coaching but, having worked as both a sporting director and manager, he felt the tasks required of each role could not be as neatly separated. At the beginning of the new year Fletcher relayed the message that United — meaning owner Joel Glazer, Richard Arnold and Murtough — did not view January as a good period to do business. At the heart of his dilemma was Ronaldo, as Rangnick explained on Friday. “Cristiano scored a few goals — I’m not blaming him at all, he did great in those games — but he’s not a pressing monster. He told Ronaldo of his intentions for a change in tactics days ahead of United’s trip to face Manchester City on March 6, with sessions then geared towards starting Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba as two false nines. The predominant message out of possession was to get in shape, tight and narrow. Last Wednesday Ronaldo was also absent from a squad meal at Wing’s, the Manchester city centre Chinese restaurant, laid on by the club for staff and players to say goodbye to long-serving United employees. Fletcher relayed the message, Rangnick listened, and Phelan provided the necessary pep talk to Martial, who at that point was in negotiations over an exit to Sevilla and had publicly rowed with United’s interim manager. It was judged Ronaldo should stay on given the need for a goal but he would be supported by Edinson Cavani so West Ham had two strikers to worry about and more space up top should appear.

Wilfried Zaha netted the only goal of the game at Selhurst Park, which saw Ralf Rangnick's final match as interim manager end in defeat.

Inside the final 10 minutes, there were calls for a penalty to United as Cavani appeared to be hauled down in the box – but appeals were waved away and there was no VAR intervention either. Into the final 30 minutes of the season and the Reds were continuing to search for a leveller. At the other end, Zaha was continuing to cause problems, dragging a shot wide of the post. The resulting set-play saw Scott McTominay left with a free hear at the back post – but he could only direct his effort right at the keeper. David De Gea was then forced into a couple of smart saves from the Palace left, first from Wilfried Zaha and then Jeffrey Schlupp, but the Spaniard dealt with both efforts comfortably. At the start of the second period, an early chance came United’s way when Cavani was fouled in Palace territory.

'You will always see an era come to an end,' the new manager said after a season in which United finished in sixth place with a record low of 58 points.

I will speak with the players at the end of June and in the first week of July,” he said. “We [he and his staff] at every club think about: ‘What is in the spirit of the club?’ That is what we want to know, but also that is why they appoint me as manager. “I have a good feeling from the meetings, we have a plan, and now it’s about getting the plan done, to get it into a process, to cooperate, to be consistent in our plan and when we have good people around, with the right connection and the right commitment and we will achieve the success we want.” Asked about this Ten Hag said: “I have heard that but I will draw my own line. Ten Hag did concede that he will have to hit the ground running. He will also wait until the first of his players return on 27 June to meet them for the first time. We have a strategy, a concept, and we will work on that. First of all we will roll it out to the staff, then the players, and then you will see,” he said. I think if we improve, if we can work with them, we can get more out of them than this season,” he said. “First of all, we want to make the fans proud. Inside Manchester United's worst Premier League season: Where it ... (ESPN)

Failure across the board and new lows in terms of goals conceded, losing sequences and points tally. How did Man United get like this?

Rangnick also set alarm bells ringing within the club when he was warned that managing United would lead to unprecedented scrutiny of his results and decision-making in the media and among supporters. There was also a suspicion within the club that many of the leaks coming from the dressing room were from three specific camps, with one in particular identified as being a persistent problem. There's a real mood now that the guy in charge has an idea of what he wants to do and how he will execute it. Harry Maguire had a bad night at Anfield, but Rangnick made the easy decision to substitute Jones at half-time because he didn't have the bottle to take Maguire off." He was overlooked and soon hired by Tottenham, who ended the season qualifying for the Champions League, 13 points ahead of United in the table. The 24-year-old ended the season with five goals in 32 appearances and has lost his England place, though he alone was not responsible for United's poor form. So in came Rangnick while United embarked on a "thorough" process to identify a long-term appointment. The England forward, who delayed surgery on an injured shoulder until August (a month after playing in the Euro 2020 final), did not return to first-team action until mid-October and went on to endure his worst season for the club. But while the team were heading for a sixth-placed finish in the Premier League and a spot in next season's Europa League, one player's representative was more concerned with how often Ronaldo was used to promote the club's sponsors. It was a season that saw the team led by three managers -- Solskjaer, Michael Carrick and Rangnick -- and one in which humiliation lurked around every corner. Sources have told ESPN that the rot set in under Solskjaer, who was regarded as indecisive, weak and lacking tactical acumen. When Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Manchester United last August, 12 years after leaving for Real Madrid, the team were unbeaten in the Premier League and harbouring hopes of challenging for the title.
