America Reduces High-Speed Internet Cost for Low-Income Homes ... (Intelligent Living)

High-speed internet is fundamental as it enables people to fulfill work and school obligations, apply for jobs, and impact global society.

Exercising free speech and obtaining information is now heavily dependent on having internet access. Without such access, many people lack a meaningful way to influence and hold supranational rule-makers and institutions accountable. “Internet access is no luxury, but instead a moral human right. This relates to a recent study by the University of Birmingham that argues the idea of free internet connectivity as a fundamental human right. “High-speed internet service is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity. If your provider isn’t listed, ACP may still refund you. The ACP provides $30 monthly subsidies ($75 in tribal areas) on Internet service for lower-income households, meaning households receive a $30 or $75 discount on high-speed internet. - Lifeline If you’re single, your income can’t exceed $27,180. These companies are required to either cut prices or increase speeds so that all ACP-eligible households can have high-quality internet plans for a maximum of $30 per month. In addition, they said they’ve secured private sector commitments – agreements with 20 internet service providers to lower high-speed internet costs for low-income American families. Therefore, many feel that free internet access should be a human right since it would empower billions of citizens to lead ‘minimally decent lives.’

COMMENTARY: Q&A with E.R. Frank, author of 'America' (starexponent.com)

E.R. Frank is an author of young adult fiction. Her first book, “America,” was published in 2002 and has been translated into more than five languages.

She took me out to lunch and asked me if I was Jewish. I said that I was, and I told her that it was a little disconcerting to be in Germany, a country I wasn’t ever sure I would want to visit. I think it was around 2005 that “America” was a finalist in the Young Adult category for the Berlin Literary Festival. I was flown to Germany for a week of author visits, literary events, and for the award ceremony. I hope that if it would ever go a school board, that the school board would invite other voices to have their say. To feel that we matter, that we have value, and that we are not alone. It is the shame of the society that allows this to happen and that is tremendously powerful. I would love to be able to talk to parents wanting to ban books directly, but it would depend upon how willing people are to listen. If you are really that concerned about your young people, then maybe that community needs to gather around social media because there is a lot more risk there. It is always disheartening to me that a tiny minority could get books banned. They see that the shame that they have felt is not their shame. So if you have a plan to install your tribe into power, it seems that starting at the school board level has become a way to do that. It is the shame of the perpetrator. Of course, anyone can feel free to debate whether or not my books are well-written, but that is a different conversation.

To compile its ranking, the employer review company weighed three factors equally: median annual base salary, overall job satisfaction rating and the number of jobs available during the past year. But the rankings also cover a wide spectrum of fields, including real estate, human resources, health care, and more. That said, some criteria remain the same: salary, work satisfaction and mobility.

North American box office is poised to overtake China this year as global theatrical industry makes moves towards recovery.

China had reached stage five on four weekends and stage four on another four weekends in the early part of 2022. Italy, Japan, and the U.K. are just behind. France, Germany and Austria are seeing the most sustained levels of business. Only South Korea, among the top 30 markets tracked by the company, had not achieved either Stages 4 or 5 by the end of 2021. U.K.-based research firm Gower Street Analytics forecast that the North American figure would overtake China’s revenues over the weekend or early this week. The Future of Abortions in America (The Cut)

The legal right to abortion is likely to disappear in half the country in a matter of weeks when the Supreme Court issues its opinion in Dobbs v.

It will be regularly updated online to bring you the information you need. Modern pharma and the old-fashioned USPS now enable an early pregnancy to end safely at home — that is, if you can evade surveillance and law enforcement, which have already criminalized people, mostly women of color, for their pregnancy outcomes, even where abortion is technically legal. Others will need or prefer an in-clinic abortion in a state where legal abortion still stands; this magazine has a guide to those locations, too, as well as how to get help with travel, expenses, and even child care. The only good news now is that, in most cases, an abortion outside the blessing of the law no longer requires begging at the feet of a doctor or the often brutal, sometimes ineffective measures women took on their own before Roe: the infamous coat hanger, the consumption of toxic substances, a stranger with faked credentials. The question is what it will cost medically, financially — and criminally. Abortion itself, and the need for it, will not, and never has.

Why does America allow abortions until fetal viability? (The Economist)

The Supreme Court has struggled to devise another regime, and may soon eliminate the right to abortion altogether | The Economist explains.

Since most abortions happen before 15 weeks (and Mississippi’s only clinic only offers the procedure until 16 weeks), the reasoning would go, a 15-week ban is not an “undue burden” on the abortion right, as long as the procedure is available thereafter if the fetus has an anomaly or the mother is at risk. At that point, said the court, states’ interest in the “potential life” of the fetus becomes “compelling” enough that they can ban abortion even if doing so “overrides the rights of the woman.” (By contrast, there is no particular medical reason for Mississippi’s 15-week cut-off.) Many of those countries make abortion and contraception easy to obtain through universal health care. The share of people who support second- and third-trimester abortions drops to 28% and 13% respectively. In most countries that permit abortion “on demand”—meaning women need no justification to get one—that balance shifts over the course of a pregnancy. On the other is the life of the fetus.

Here's the speech Biden should give about abortion (The Washington Post)

Biden is not the ideal president to rally America around abortion rights. He can still rise to the occasion.

“What I do know is that America is not a theocracy, and when it comes to mysteries that are beyond the scope of human judgment, we must err on the side of personal freedom and bodily autonomy. It is not the American thing to do. It is not the Christian thing to do. “The leaked draft opinion from the Supreme Court hinges on the idea that the right to an abortion is not ‘deeply rooted in our history and traditions,’ that it does not appear in the Constitution. Another word that does not appear in our Constitution is ‘woman.’ Not once. “For many of you, it is also an issue of the potential lives of embryos and fertilized eggs. “Talking about abortion means being aware of the relationship of women to America’s history and traditions. “But now a draft opinion has leaked from the Supreme Court, which would drastically limit the ability of women in this country to end their pregnancies. I am a faithful Catholic. And I know what it means to be a parent: the pride, the pain. When it comes to abortion, I have found it difficult to sort out what I believe and to find the right words to convey those beliefs. At the end of three months of work, in the summer of 1787, these 39 men signed their names to the first draft of their dream and launched the democracy that we all fight for and live in and wrestle with today. Wade, I wished he hadn’t: He awkwardly alluded to the Supreme Court taking away the freedom of women to “choose to abort a child.” Joe Biden is not the person I would have chosen to be leading the nation when Roe v.

Bank of America is raising its hourly minimum wage to $22 — here's ... (MarketWatch)

The $22 hourly rate is more than triple the federal minimum wage of $7.25, which lawmakers last increased in 2009.

In an extremely tight job market, Bank of America’s announcement Monday framed the minimum wage increase from $21 to $22 as an effort to find and keep personnel. In 2020, there were 1.1 million workers with earnings at or below the $7.25 federal minimum wage, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said last year. There are more than 150 million non-farm employees working in America, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data compiled by the Federal Reserve’s Bank of St. Louis. In 2022, workers were poised for minimum wage hikes in 25 states. And $22 breezes past the $15 hourly wage so many workers are advocating for , if they don’t have it already. Bank of America BAC, +5.94%has almost 166,000 U.S. employees and approximately 15% will see larger paychecks due to the minimum wage increase, a spokeswoman said.
