Last month in an interview backstage at Coachella, Japanese Breakfast told NME: “This year is about enjoying myself. Japanese Breakfast made her Saturday Night Live debut last night (May 21) on the show’s season 47 finale – watch her play ‘Be Sweet’ and ‘Paprika’ below.

Tonight marked the Saturday Night Live finale, and that allowed Japanese Breakfast to have some time in the spotlight as the musical guest.

There was a sadness to the end of the show tonight, which makes some sense given the goodbyes we watched throughout the night. The thing that stood out most to us as a viewers was how enthused Zauner seemed to be performing on the stage. Almost immediately, it was clear why the show chose them for the finale.

She shared the story during an appearance on 'The Tonight Show' and afterward, she and Fallon chowed down on a hot dog.

As planned, they stopped by the hot dog stand and took advantage of a two-for-one hot dog deal to cap off their night. “I didn’t want to take off the outfit and get stuff on it, so I just didn’t really eat anything that day.” She spoke about her decision to go for a hot dog during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “It was such a busy day getting ready and I was so hungry, all I ate was gruel in the morning,” she said.

"Through her music and writing, Zauner has created a unique voice for Asian America. Her work has deeply explored themes of belonging, motherhood, grief, renewal, and cultural reclamation and preservation," the resolution reads. She is currently working on writing the screenplay for the film adaptation of the book, which has been on the New York Times Bestsellers List for 30 weeks since it was released in April 2021. She performed along with host Natasha Lyonne, who also made her debut on the long-running NBC variety show.

Both songs from her 'SNL' debut are from the singer's 2021 third album which received a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album.

The season’s conclusion also marks the departure of SNL cast members Pete Davidson, Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, and Kyle Mooney. Here, she performed two songs from Jubilee, “ Be Sweet” and “ Paprika,” on the Natasha Lyonne-hosted episode. Zauner kicked off the night with a performance of “Be Sweet.” She appeared on stage in a deep magenta dress and knee-high leather boots with a band as pink and blue light bulbs surrounded her as she sung the uplifting track.

Natasha Lyonne hosted the Season 47 closer, which also marked the departures of Pete Davidson, Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, and Kyle Mooney.

The band is set to open for Florence and the Machine on a pair of Pacific Northwest dates in October. Davidson had previously alluded that his time on the show was nearing an end, saying, “I’m ready to hang up the jersey.” Veterans Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant, who both joined in 2012, are also reportedly leaving SNL after this season, along with Kyle Mooney, who joined the cast a year later. She also starred in a sketch advertising “grey adult pigtails” for “funky” older women.

Rather than going to a lavish afterparty, she stayed true to her DIY roots by eating Nathan’s hot dogs in the MGM Grand food court: “[We] stayed up late in a freezing cold warehouse making this record eating a lot of junk food. [It was] full-circle at the Grammys, getting to share a hot dog.” Naturally, Fallon then surprised Zauner with a pair of celebratory hot dogs to share on the spot. When Fallon pointed out that the soundtrack will undoubtedly be great, Zauner responded with a laugh: “I’m going to hopefully write my Oscar-bait original.”

This week's Season 47 finale of SNL aslo saw them say farewell to cast members Pete Davidson, Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant and Kyle Mooney.
