The jockey switch from Ortiz to Velazquez might make a notable difference. While trainers and jockeys play obvious roles in any big-stakes race, Lukas and Saez aren't the only reasons why Secret Oath has a shot at claiming back-to-back victories. Lukas being part of the race team has a lot to do with it, as he has six Preakness wins on his resume. Secret Oath has a lot going for her on all fronts heading into Saturday's race, but she's far from the only horse who can pull out the win. However, Secret Oath isn't the late-week favorite. While we've only seen six fillies win the Run for the Black-Eyed Susans (most recently Swiss Skydiver in 2020), the D. Wayne Lukas-trained filly has a legitimate chance. My guess is that it happens again at Pimlico. Early Voting is another favorite. That makes her very, very tough to beat." Riding Epicenter will be veteran jockey Joel Rosario, who has won both the Kentucky Derby (2013) and the Belmont (2014, 2019). Here's a look at the lineup—including trainers, jockeys and the latest odds—for the 147th running of the Preakness Stakes. As we inch closer to the 2022 Preakness Stakes, Kentucky Oaks winner Secret Oath is trending as one of the favorites.

Tyler Gaffalione, aboard Happy Jack, is the most recent Preakness winner riding War of Will in 2019. Thirteen horses have won the Triple Crown, finishing off the Derby and the Preakness by also taking the Belmont Stakes, most recently Justify in 2018. Kenneth McPeek is trying to make it two for three in the Preakness with Creative Minister after Swiss Skydiver delivered for him in 2020. She also finished third at the Arkansas Derby, a race won by Derby horse Cyberknife. American Pharoah also won from No. 1 on its way to the Triple Crown in '15, following California Chrome from No. 3 in '14. In '17, Cloud Computing shocked everyone out of No. 2. Simplification seems to be the sweet spot between past performance and future potential. The easy lean is Simplification, despite a strong training and jockey team behind Happy Jack. Doug O'Neill is looking for more Preakness glory with Happy Jack, 10 years after his first and only win with I'll Have Another. Although No. 4 turned out very poorly for Derby winner Always Dreaming in '17, that position has now produced 14 winners in the past 118 years. War of Will upset Improbable out of No. 1 in 2019. That should provide some confidence to Tim Yakteen's new entry, Armagnac, after neither of his two former Baffert horses, Taiba or Messier, could win the Derby. The low-paying odds on Epicenter make sense, given it took a ridiculously perfect inside-outside late charge orchestrated by jockey Sonny Leon for Rich Strike to win.

In a Preakness field with several compelling contenders, Kentucky Derby runner-up Epicenter is the clear favorite because he never has a bad day.
Bob Ehalt and Tom Pedulla became fast friends when they met on their first day at Fordham Preparatory School in the Bronx, N.Y., in 1970.
PEDULLA: When the connections put up $150,000 to supplement to a race, that gets my attention and says that trainer Kenny McPeek is convinced that Creative Minister belongs. That has to lead us to Epicenter, by far the more seasoned and accomplished of the two. I just think the Derby had to take a little something out of him and that could be the difference in the heat and humidity Saturday. PEDULLA: Bob, I was initially torn between Epicenter and Early Voting. The more I thought about it, the more convinced I am that Epicenter is the way to go. Years of experience have taught us that the cream rises to the top. Bob soon introduced Tom to the joys of Thoroughbred racing.

With Rich Strike, the Kentucky Derby winner, sitting out the race, the filly Secret Oath is the horse to watch.
On Friday, a day traditionally headlined by the Black-Eyed Susan race for fillies, the inaugural Preakness Live Culinary, Art and Music Festival will be held, with performances by Lauryn Hill, Megan Thee Stallion, Brittney Spencer and others. Because of the pandemic, organizers capped attendance at 10,000 people, which included the infield. That might be maturity and getting into the groove of what we really want to do.” Another new shooter, Creative Minister, was not even on the Derby trail. We hold the race in high regard, and we want to do the right thing for the horse for the future, too, beyond the Derby and the Preakness.” Brown and the colt’s owner, Seth Klarman, used this playbook before with the 2017 Preakness victor, Cloud Computing. His trainer, Chad Brown, made the tough call to hold him out of the Derby despite qualifying for the race. Secret Oath will be the 46th horse saddled by Lukas for the Preakness. No one has had more. “So it’s not a disappointing goal to shoot for. Now, he’s acting like a strong and alert horse.” “I actually think that she is training better these two weeks than she did the two weeks before the Oaks. Even with the trip here, it seems like she is taking a hold of it. They appeared on network morning shows and did countless media interviews.
Epicenter's the undisputed Preakness favorite, but several athletes will be trying their best to take him down. Among them is Secret Oath, a filly whose ...
Early Voting’s a son of Gun Runner and the colts out of Gun Runner are crazy hot. Not saying this Preakness is definitely gonna play out that way, but to the extent that this Preakness is a jockey’s race, that’s the method of it being so. I happen to have loved the race he ran in the Derby and, with Rich Strike gone, I love him here. The horse seemed to come out of the Derby in good shape with good energy. Taking Rich Strike out of the equation, if you look at the race he ran in the Derby, what’s not to like? Irad Ortiz, who’s on Armagnac, is brilliant, and can make a lot happen with Armagnac, who’s kinda languishing in the middle of the pack, odds-wise. That said, I don’t think they are going to ride to stop the filly, and I do think she’s legit. Bluegrass Wise Man ™: Secret Oath needs to get her normal position in the middle of the field, hopefully in the clear so she does not get stuck down on the rail and have colts laying on her and perhaps intimidating her. To take the race. She ran great in the Oaks, but she carries some questions, the main one of which is, if you look at the Oaks in terms of who she ran against and beat, there just is, or was, nothing in the Oaks of Epicenter caliber. Obviously, he’s eighty-six and counting, and his barn’s had its ups and downs lately, but he’s won the race a half-dozen times. Hence today’s race-day question takes a slightly different tack: Is the 147th running of the Preakness really Epicenter’s to lose?
When is the 2022 Preakness Stakes date? Epicenter, Secret Oath, and Early Voting will run without Rich Strike on Saturday, May 21.

Wood Memorial runner-up Early Voting is the 7-2 second choice in the 13-horse 2022 Preakness Stakes field, while Kentucky Oaks heroine Secret Oath is 9-2. Kentucky Derby runner-up Epicenter is the 6-5 morning-line favorite in the 2022 Preakness Stakes odds. She is coming off a career-defining victory, a two-length win in the Kentucky Oaks. A Saratoga Springs-based racing insider and Beyer Speed Figure maker, Weir is a two-time qualifier for the prestigious National Horseplayers Championship in Las Vegas. He has produced multiple five-figure days at the track over the years, including a $60,000 Pick 6 at Del Mar in 2014.
What time does the 2022 Preakness Stakes start? Here's a breakdown of when the race starts and the TV and streaming options available.
In Los Angeles and New York, it’s channel 4, in Chicago, it’s on channel 5, and if you are in Denver, it’s channel 9. For simplicity sake, we’re just going to list the time as if you were in Baltimore, or, in other words, Eastern time. But if you are a horse racing fan, it’s indispensable. If you are a little further west in the Midwest, your start time is 6:01 p.m. Or maybe you want to see if a girl horse (a 3-year-old filly) can beat eight boy horses (3-year-old colts) then you are probably looking forward to seeing Secret Oath (9-2) run in Saturday’s Preakness Stakes. If you are still in shock about an 80-1 longshot winning the Kentucky Derby and wondering if lightning can strike twice then you are probably looking forward to seeing Fenwick (50-1 on the morning line) run in Saturday’s Preakness Stakes.
Just because the 2022 Preakness Stakes won't have the Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike in the race doesn't mean it will be any less thrilling.
Experts from The Post and Action Network make their betting picks for the 147th Preakness Stakes.
I like to go with speed in the Preakness and Early Voting has plenty of it. I’ll be surprised if Epicenter doesn’t finish in the money on Saturday. My favorite horse to include in Preakness exotic bets. This field is not very deep and Epicenter is the class of the bunch. If the pace gets too hot, too quick, Skippylongstocking could pick up the pieces and potentially add a nice price to exactas or trifectas. She followed that up with a victory at the Kentucky Oaks. The third betting choice by the morning-line odds, Secret Oath is worth a play to upset Epicenter. Mo Donegal would have been my pick if he were running in the Preakness. Since he isn’t, I’ll go with a well-rested Early Voting to edge out the favorite Epicenter. Chad Brown opted to pass on the Derby which may prove to be a wise decision. Tough beat in the Derby. Won the duel with rival Zandon but Joel Rosario didn’t see Rich Strike in his side view mirror. The tight turns at Pimlico as well as the shorter distance make him tough to reel in. No “also eligibles” in the second jewel but there is a filly and she has a devastating late kick. The post time is set for approximately 7:01 PM ET and it will air on NBC.

He is the best 3-year-old in this field and should win or at least finish in the top three. Early Voting's trainer is Chad Brown, who decided to skip the Kentucky Derby and take aim at the Preakness, so he comes in fresh. The last time the favorite won and the second choice ran second in the Preakness was 1981 when favored Pleasant Colony won and second choice Bold Ego ran second. Early Voting came in second at the Wood Memorial and has the speed to steal this race. From 2001 to 2015, eight of 15 favorites won the Preakness, and only three finished out of the money. This filly won the Kentucky Oaks in dominant fashion. He can go to the front if he wants it, or just sit off Early Voting or Armagnac if he wants a target to run at. Feels like a race with a little bit of vindication for the best 3-year-old in the game. I expected this one to run well at a big number in the Derby, and he didn't disappoint as he completed the superfecta. I'm not sure she's fast enough to win, but she's certainly a good possibility to hit the board, as she wasn't embarrassed at all in the Arkansas Derby with that finish, considering the trip. But I don't think he would be here if he didn't come out of the race well. From the sounds of things, it appears they will send and hope for the best.

EPICENTER was run down by an impossible horse two weeks ago in the Derby, yet he ran the best race that day by nearly any measure and emerged an unlucky loser ...
The Derby runner-up has been a model of consistency throughout his career and surely a deserving favorite, although he must answer one question – whether he can come back with yet another peak performance on just two weeks’ rest.\r\n\r\nSIMPLIFICATION was my choice at a huge price to upset the Derby. At the top of the stretch, he appeared to be in perfect position to do just that when seemingly poised to make a legitimate run at the leaders from off what had been a torrid pace. If this pace heats up, he might be the one to directly benefit. \r\n\r\nSIMPLIFICATION continued his string of positive performances with a good fourth in the Derby. The trip and race flow worked in his favor, and he had a big look at it when they straightened away for home. He is versatile in terms of running style and can be a lot closer to the pace if necessary.\r\n\r\nEARLY VOTING comes into the Preakness a fresh horse for a great trainer, and there’s a chance he’ll shake loose heading into the clubhouse turn. Wheeling back in only two weeks obviously raises concern of how much is still left in the tank, but he is deserving of one more chance if able to produce his best effort in this spot.\r\n\r\nCREATIVE MINISTER worked as well as any 3-year-old on the grounds at Gulfstream Park during the Championship meeting even before getting to the races, and there were plenty of good ones training there this winter, including four Kentucky Derby starters. He does have the speed to get close to the pace here and retains some upside potential. \r\n\r\nCREATIVE MINISTER is a neck away from being undefeated, and he ran down the pacesetter to take a first-level race on the Derby undercard. This looks like a nice spot for SECRET OATH, who took advantage of quick fractions when impressively capturing the Kentucky Oaks. Ran well against males two starts back and has an impressive burst of speed when called upon.\r\n\r\n:: Get ready for the Preakness with DRF past performances, picks, and betting strategies!\r\n\r\nMike Welsch\r\n1. Early Voting\r\n2. Epicenter\r\n3. Simplification\r\n4. Creative Minister\r\n\r\nLogically, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of viable options in this year’s Preakness field, but then again logic had little to do with the final outcome of this year’s Kentucky Derby, so there is that to consider. He won at nine furlongs early this year, but squandered a two-length lead in the stretch racing nine furlongs last out.\r\n\r\nSIMPLIFICATION finished a creditable fourth in the Kentucky Derby, and four of the last 12 Preakness winners finished off the board in the Derby (War of Will, Oxbow, Shackleford, Lookin At Lucky). FENWICK and HAPPY JACK appear to be in too tough.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nMarcus Hersh\r\n1. Epicenter\r\n2. Secret Oath\r\n3. Early Voting\r\n4. Simplification\r\n\r\nThe crazy thing is six of the nine Preakness entrants are wheeling back on two weeks’ rest, give or take a day, yet only three come out of the Kentucky Derby. Secret Oath exits the Kentucky Oaks, and then there are Creative Minister and Armagnac, who contested allowance races two weekends ago.\r\n\r\nOnly one of those six, the Derby favorite and the Preakness favorite EPICENTER posted a workout between races. He has a great foundation under him and through every piece of training and racing has continued to develop and improve through the winter and spring.\r\n\r\nDon’t expect Epicenter to bounce off his Derby. Here’s a pre-Derby quote from trainer Steve Asmussen: “The great level of confidence I have in Epicenter is because it does not appear I can do too much with him, whereas several of the other runners I’ve had in the Derby, it was very apparent that you could.”\r\n\r\nHere are the Derby/Preakness finishes of horses Asmussen ran back on two weeks’ rest, 15 days with Rachel Alexandra, who won the Oaks: Curlin (3rd-1st), Daddy Nose Best (10th-9th), Lookin At Lee (2nd-4th), Hence (11th-9th), Midnight Bourbon (6th-2nd), Rachel Alexandra (1st-1st).\r\n\r\nYou can’t say any of those horses regressed much, if at all, and I’d trust this trainer perhaps more than any other to have a feel for when to push forward and when to pull back. He also benefits from the absence of several of the divisional leaders in this Preakness, which contains only Epicenter and Simplification among the first 13 finishers in the Derby. Creative Minister has improved with each start and has proven to be quite handy in his two starts since a green debut sprinting, which could lead to a nice trip in this race.\r\n\r\nSKIPPYLONGSTOCKING has adopted a new running style in his two most recent starts while also stretching out in distance, leading to consecutive Beyer tops and a Grade 2 placing. Preakness Stakes picks and analysis from Daily Racing Form handicappers across the United States.\r\n\r\nMike Beer\r\n1. Epicenter\r\n2. Creative Minister\r\n3. Skippylongstocking\r\n4. Secret Oath\r\n\r\nEPICENTER was run down by an impossible horse two weeks ago in the Derby, yet he ran the best race that day by nearly any measure and emerged an unlucky loser while earning a second consecutive triple-digit Beyer. Each of his last three efforts is faster than any of his rivals have managed to run from 47 combined starts, and he has proven to be tactical enough to deal with any pace scenario since his easy front-running score in the Risen Star. At his expected short price, one has to take into consideration that he is exiting an enervating effort two weeks ago, but he stands out in this Preakness on form and is going to be hard on his rivals with a representative effort.\r\n\r\nCREATIVE MINISTER has only three starts behind him and is making his stakes debut in the Preakness with plenty to prove. He can sit back and make one run here at a price.\r\n\r\nSECRET OATH wheels back on short rest and steps back in with colts after asserting her superiority over her fellow 3-year-old fillies in the Kentucky Oaks. She did not have the best of trips while facing the boys for the first time in the Arkansas Derby, though that was not a particularly strong field. He was not a real threat while finishing a clear third in the Wood Memorial, but he was always on the outside in that race, while top two finishers, Mo Donegal and Early Voting, rode the rail.
