Thanks to Spacek and Simmons, the show proves initially worthwhile despite being its meandering pace. Said couple benefits enormously from being played by Sissy Spacek and especially J.K. Simmons, whose characters, Irene and Franklyn York, experienced a devastating personal loss in the past that still scars them. "There's a reason we were the ones who found this," Irene says.

'Night Sky' revealed: Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons on his ... (Space.com)

Simmons co-stars with Sissy Spacek and Chai Hansen in Amazon Prime Video's new outer space mystery-box series.

Absolutely. When I was a kid I remember Neil Armstrong and "One Giant Leap For Mankind." I was in the basement with one of my good buddies, Randy Bostler, watching that happen on our crappy little black-and-white TV live and in person. We leave the end of our first season with such a variety of cliffhanger vibes. I saw "Cocoon" when I was in my late 20s and loved it. He kept insisting that I was going to take on the role of mentor whether I wanted to or not. JKS: I hadn't thought of " Cocoon" and I'm really glad you brought that up. We're going to put a woman on the moon. After the little kid dinosaur books stage, that was one of the things that kept me excited about reading. Sissy Spacek was already attached to play Irene, so that was part of the draw. If ever given the opportunity to take a rocket ride, would you strap in? JKS: It was great, and ultimately over the course of four-and-a-half months on something like this, a kind of hybrid between a feature film set and an old network-style TV series set, you do have time to develop some camaraderie and that family spirit. In addition to his dozens of film and television roles, many of us also know Simmons as Professor Burke in those humorous Farmers Insurance commercials, and Peter Parker's Daily Bugle editor, J. Jonah Jameson, in director Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man Trilogy" of the 2000s starring Tobey Maguire. This weird chamber teleports them to an abandoned alien base on a remote world where the married couple has arranged a cozy living room observation area to relax within.

Night Sky review: A sci-fi mystery that looks down, not up | Digital ... (Digital Trends)

J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek bring their A-game in 'Night Sky,' the new sci-fi mystery series that is set to premiere Friday, May 20 on Amazon Prime Video.

As a matter of fact, Night Sky is often at its best when it’s not doing that, and that, as they say, is the rub. While Night Sky does often struggle to balance its various subplots, the series does offer some genuinely refreshing moments of narrative ingenuity throughout its first season. The problem with Night Sky is that Franklin and Irene’s marriage isn’t its only narrative thread, and the constant precision with which their storyline is handled isn’t present in many of the series’ other subplots. Even when Night Sky is testing its central relationship, the series never feels like it is challenging Franklin and Irene’s marriage in a way that is manipulative or inauthentic. The duo’s journey is intrinsically connected to Jude’s arrival at Franklin and Irene’s home, but the series takes its time spelling that out. For their part, Night Sky creators Holden Miller and Daniel C. Connolly make it clear from the series’ opening scene that they have a firm grasp on the complexities and emotions that lie underneath the surface of Franklin and Irene’s marriage.

Who died in Night Sky season 1? (Ready Steady Cut)

This article, “Who died in Night Sky season 1” contains spoilers regarding the Amazon Prime Video series. Check out the archive of recaps, news, and.

That concludes the roundup of the casualties in Night Sky. Do you think Byron is dead? Here is a breakdown of everyone who died in the series who is of any importance to the plot. Chandra’s death is the most violent and surprisingly the last of the season. The finale is quite open ended with Byron missing on the alien planet and the Argentinians captured. In the penultimate episode, “Lake Diving”, we see the lead up to this horrific suicide and the act itself in a poignant flashback. Most of the deaths surround this cult community and these mysterious Guardians, but one particular death is a pivotal plot point in this emotional drama and much closer to home.

Prime Video's Night Sky is a Sentimental but Hollow Sci-fi Series ... (Roger Ebert)

A review of the new Prime Video series Night Sky, premiering on May 20th.

A melancholy piece of music or tearful performance can signal to us a moment that’s important, and yet the narrative tact isn’t there to allow us to naturally feel for it. “Night Sky” makes for easy viewing at least, thanks to how its tone rarely challenges its audience, and also thanks to the directors who inject bits of visual life to it: the directors in the mix include Juan José Campanella (“ The Secret in Their Eyes”), Sara Colangelo (“ The Kindergarten Teacher”), and Shari Springer Berman & Robert Pulcini (“ American Splendor”). They help give a discernible amount of dimension to flat material that wants to mix the surreal nature of sci-fi with the humble humdrum of eating at a breakfast diner, but hardly feels more urgent or clever than that. And somewhere else in the world, a mother, Stella ( Julieta Zylberberg) and her daughter Toni (Rocío Hernández), also have a similar situation, with their own kept secrets related to this phenomenon. Needless to say their arcs suffer from common problems with “Night Sky”: thin writing and slow plotting that's more focused on establishing background than making for a nervous present tense. This is a quaint and curious opening premise for a sci-fi story about the wonder of such a partnership, and yet “Night Sky” (created by Holden Miller) proves to have few standout ideas of its own afterward. Meanwhile, a nosy neighbor named Byron ( Adam Bartley) has his own frustrations about trying to make something of himself in their small town of Farnsworth, Illinois while struggling to earn the respect of his grumbling neighbor Franklin. These are emotional journeys that, of no fault to the actors, take away from the series' power instead of adding to it.

Stream It Or Skip It: 'Night Sky' On Prime Video, Where J.K. Simmons ... (Decider)

Oscar winners Sissy Spacek and JK Simmons star as a long-married couple that just happens to visit a faraway planet via a chamber buried beneath their ...

As the first episode ends and we see that the chamber isn’t quite as much of a secret as the Yorks have thought it was through the decades, the possibilities of just what that world is about and how it’s informed the Yorks’ relationship are almost endless. The look on Jeannie’s face is the cringey look we made when we heard that bit of cheesiness. Irene, on the other hand, is literally going through an existential crisis, and that’s reflected in Spacek’s sense of wonder and desperation as she tries to convince Franklin that exploring outside the chamber is worthwhile. As we find out who else knows about the chamber, the show may move away from its stars a little more than the first episode does. After dropping Irene at the doctor, Franklin gets distracted by a surprise visit from their granddaughter, Denise (Kiah McKirnan), who got a Facebook message from the Yorks’ new neighbors, Byron and Jeannie Albemarle (Adam Bartley, Cass Buggé), that they’ve been wandering their yard in the middle of the night. In a way, it also reminds us of Cocoon in that the alien world being experienced by the Yorks is more of a source of wonder than a potential threat. Usually that’s a bad thing, but because one or both are on screen most of the time, their performances elevate the entire show. What Shows Will It Remind You Of? In a weird way, Night Sky has some of the same sci fi DNA as Outer Range, even if the tone is wildly different. For his part, Franklin thinks enough is enough and that they think others should know about the chamber. The Gist: As we see from when they meet at the pool hall, Franklin and Irene York (J.K. Simmons, Sissy Spacek) have been together for a very long time. They have a cozy setup there, and after being there over 800 times, they know how to navigate being transported there — Franklin gets sick, for instance. And Franklin has been caring for Irene since she fell a year ago.

'Night Sky' review: Simmons and Spacek go interdimensional ... (NME.com)

Two of Hollywood's best-loved actors, J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek, finally get together in this Amazon Prime sort-of sci-fi, 'Night Sky'.

Barely a sci-fi at all, even when the story starts getting silly, Night Sky’s strength lies in its restraint – the shadow of a past family tragedy hanging far heavier over Franklin and Irene than the mysteries of the universe unspooling all around them. Directed by Juan José Campanella (the Oscar-winning director of 2009’s The Secret In Their Eyes), the pilot sets up a slow-paced, fuzzy-edged drama – sparkling with twilight magic and Spielbergian warmth. Before that, it’s just a lovely drama about a sweet couple growing old together (who happen to have a portal to another planet in their garden shed…)

Night Sky: Cast & Character Guide (Screen Rant)

Night Sky is Prime Video's science fiction drama with a character-driven focus. Here's a guide to the Night Sky cast and where you've seen the actors.

Kiah McKirnan is known for her role as Anne Harris in 2021’s The Mare of Easttown. Adam Bartley is known for his role as The Ferg in Longmire and was recently cast as Richard in Candy. Chai Hansen is known for his roles as Ilian in The 100, Zac Blakely in Mako Mermaids, and Monkey in The New Legends of Monkey. Toni is played by Rocío Hernández in Prime Video’s Night Sky. First seen alongside her mother, Stella, in Night Sky episode 2, Toni originally knows nothing about the cult of Caerul or her mother’s colorful past. Angus O’Brien previously appeared as Mark Williams in The Kitchen. J.K. Simmons most famous roles include Fletcher in Whiplash, the voice of Nolan Grayson in Invincible, and of course as J. Jonah Jameson in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films and more recently in the MCU. For such a character-driven narrative as Night Sky, the acting is crucial and there’s little chance to lean on special effects. While he is cantankerous and resistant to aiding Jude when he arrives, he ultimately wants to make Irene happy. Sissy Spacek has been a household name since her eponymous appearance in the 1976 Stephen King adaptation Carrie. Among many other roles, Spacek has played Mae Tuck in Tuck Everlasting and Missus Walters in The Help. As the couple struggle to find meaning and larger answers, they find themselves using the contraption to teleport to another planet that they keep secret for many years. However, the intrigue of Jude’s arrival gives Irene a new lease on life. Rather than allowing a science fiction setting to define the story, the narrative is much more about loss, grief, and trauma than it ever really is about the ability to teleport.

'Night Sky': That Ending Explained and All Your Questions Answered (CNET)

The season 1 finale of Prime Video's sci-fi drama ends with the biggest of bangs.

After she and the rest of her mysterious cohort upend Stella and Toni's van, Hannah speaks with Cornelius, and we discover Hannah is another escaped Apostate. "Welcome to the Fallen World," Hannah says creepily. Then comes the big reveal: Irene and Frank, able to breath the air without an oxygen tank, hear the far-off sound of ringing bells and look out over the next ridge at a beautiful civilization semi-encased in domed walls. They enter the chamber and end up all the way in Thailand, somewhere in Bangkok. In order to protect the Yorks, Jude gives himself up to Stella, who we discover is a Guardian. Her mission: Kill the Apostate. This puts them in grave danger, but at least they have a bargaining chip: The tied-up Cornelius, whom they can give up to stop the Guardians chasing after them. A ceremony was taking place, presumably something to do with the Guardians, because Jude goes on to taunt Stella: "I never really understood the Guardians. All that sacrifice.

JK Simmons and Sissy Spacek play a couple who find a portal too another world in their back garden.

It’s a shame, because when Spacek and Simmons are given space to delve into their characters’ relationship, things really sing. But as the show goes on and more and more side plots are introduced, it becomes messy. Yet despite suggestions from family that they move somewhere more manageable, for Irene the mystery of the portal is too overwhelming.

'Night Sky' Season 1: Ending, Explained - What Did Franklin & Irene ... (Digital Mafia Talkies)

"Night Sky," streaming on Amazon Prime Video, is an American science fiction drama, created by Holden Miller. The series takes us through the uncanny.

The Yorks stand on a cliff and see buildings and signs of settlement at a distance. They bid adieu to Jude and the Yorks and hit the road. Toni found a social media video of Jude, from the night he had accidentally met Denise and her friend in a bar, and had sung a peculiar song. She knew that it was a never-ending mess and wanted her daughter to live a happy life away from the perils of this parallel world. In the middle of their journey, Stella ditches Nick, as she felt that he didn’t understand the gravity of the issue at hand and she was sure that he would land them in trouble. But to prove his point, Franklin gives him a camera, which had the pictures of the Yorks in the secret chamber, overlooking the deserted planet. He knew that his father had intentionally left it for him and that it meant something. She writes a goodbye letter to Franklin, and in the middle of the night, makes her way to the secret chamber, in the hope of being reunited with her son, Michael. Irene asks him to trust her and give her a reason to believe him too. She calls for Franklin and takes the unknown man to her house. She wanted to take a leap of faith and go outside the chamber, to embrace the uncertainties of the deserted planet. Franklin had once kept a mouse outside the secret chamber, in the atmosphere of the deserted planet, and it had died within a few seconds.

Night Sky's Mysterious Cult Explained (Screen Rant)

A mysterious cult plays a major part in Amazon's science fiction drama, Night Sky. Here's everything season 1 tells us about the Cult of Caerul.

While the Cult of Caerul will likely be a big part of Night Sky season 2, their conflict with the Fallen World will likely define their future story. As well as guarding the teleporters, the Guardians guard the secret of Caerul by killing anyone who knows about it who no longer supports their beliefs and is a part of the cult. Caerul is a far-off place on a distant planet, but it can be reached by a huge number of teleporters, like the one in the York’s backyard, and the Cult of Caerul are intent on keeping this a secret. For this reason, the Cult of Caerul has a network of Guardians, faithful members of the cult who are assigned to guard the different teleporters. Hints from the members of the Cult of Caerul reveal that Jude’s mother sits at the very head of the cult. While the cult is shrouded in mystery during Amazon's Night Sky season 1, the finale suggests that there is more to tell.
